The opportunities and challenges faced by shipping companies are affected by the business environment in which they operate. As the business environment changes with technological, economic and political developments, shipping lines face the challenges of developing strategies that give them an advantage in better serving their customers. Almost three decades, managers have been learning how firms should adapt to changing business environments. Firm must be flexible and responsive to respond rapidly to competitive and market changes. They must benchmark continuously the best prac- tices and nuture a few new competencies to stay ahead of their competitors (Porter,1996). Todays talk, I will deliver on the “Challenges in Global Shipping”. As a Bugis, he loves sea since his childhood days. Started his career in the foreign shipping lines – The East Asia Co. Ltd. (Incorporated in Denmark, Copenhagen) in early 70’s ScanDutch and Nediloyd. He further his studies in shipping of Plymouth University and Liverpool John Moore University 1980’s. Joined ITM 1985 (till 2005) as lecturer. He is a fellow member of Institute of Logistics and Transport and a member of Selangor Yatch Club in Port Klang. Presently serving the State, as Orang Besar Daerah Sepang and Adjunct Professor of MITRANS and University Malaysia Kelantan (UMK). A doctorate (Ph.D) in Ship- ping and Maritime Studies at University of Wales College of Cardiff, UK.
