Motor Starter Protectors (MSP) General

ApplicationsThe versatile 3VU Series is designedto meet a variety of motor starterapplications. The 3VU contains bothan adjustable bi-metal thermal anda fixed magnetic trip device. Thisallows the 3VU to meet all customerrequirements.

The factory built-in instantaneous(magnetic) trip is coordinated to protectthe load and the load conductors attheir rated withstand levels withoutadditional adjustments.

The inverse-time overload protection isadjustable to match the rated current ofthe motor to be protected. An internaldifferential mechanism accelerates thetrip time during a phase loss.

The 3VU Series is designed for switch-ing AC current. However, they are suit-able for use in DC circuits.

1. Individual Manual Motor Starter3VU used to protect and manually con-trol a motor. Select by motor FLA andtype of enclosure required. Be sure toobserve maximum circuit protectiondevice allowed for installation. See page422 for selection.

2. Individual Self Protected Type "E"Combination Motor StarterMany modular motor controllers indicatedin Selection Chart (SCE1634. . . orFBE1634. . .) are UL508 Type ECombination Motor Starters. These arecomplete combination starters and canbe applied without additional branchcircuit protection. They can be used indi-vidually or in groups for multiple motorapplications. See page 425 for selection.

3. Multiple Motor Applicationsa) Group Installation per

NEC 430-533VU devices with or without 3TF con-tactors can be applied to MultipleMotor Applications utilizing GroupInstallation. Please refer to TechnicalInformation for Application Detailsand page 423 for selection.

For mounting convenience, modularmotor controllers are available in 35mm DIN Rail Mounting (3VH...) and"Fast Bus" mounting (FBM...). SeeSelection and Ordering Data page 424.b) Multiple Motor Type "E"3VU1300 MSP's with 3TF34 or3TF44 contactor can be used in multi-ples up to 56A with a 3VU91 currentlimiter for a self protected UL508Type "E" system. SCE, FBE, andFWE product for this application havebeen identified in a special selectionand ordering section on page 426.
