INTRODUCTION

Dr. Lalit Surajmal Kanodia was part of the team at MIT that built the first two multi-user

computer operating systems - CTSS and MULTICS. Up until MIT was entrusted to build a

multi-user system, all machines were single-user, and only one program could be run on the

machine at a time. MIT picked up a team for the project, called Project MAC (Multi Access

Computer). As part of this project, CTSS was built based on an IBM machine, the 1794.

Many of the software development concepts that are seen today – paging, interrupts – were

all borne out of CTSS. The next generation of this system was the Multix, built on a GE 645.

Multix was later ported to many other machines, including Prime, which became PrimeOS.

From Multix also came UNIX.

Datamatics Global Services Limited set up a Dedicated Offshore Development

Center for Wang Labs, USA, in 1983. It later became one of the first companies to establish a

satellite link from its software development center in India to AT&T Bell Labs, USA (in

1989). In 1992, it entered the area of electronic publishing. In 2000, it acquired controlling

stake in a US-listed data management company (Saztec International) while in 2003 it scaled

up a dedicated facility into a Joint Venture in the BPO space through the acquisition of

CorPay.

Datamatics was listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock

Exchange (NSE) in 2004. In 2009, the IT and BPO divisions of the Datamatics Group

amalgamated to form Datamatics Global Services Limited.

Values:

1) CustomerFirst

What does it mean? Datamatics is the type of organization that thoroughly understands the

client's business, offers global deployment and provides resource flexibility. Datamatics

offers all this by using the appropriate mix of onsite and offshore execution models. Above

all, it is a company that takes accountability & relieves the client's IT Manager from the

overhead of managing another relationship.

Therefore, by stating the value as customer first, the customer's needs are understood

completely. Datamatics becomes a partner in the customer's growth and business.

The customer first is not an empty cliché. Employees are encouraged to monitor and discuss

their dealings with clients. In doing so, Datamatics aims for high productivity and success,

but it is also because it is ingrained in employees by the Datamatics Management that success

cannot come unless there is cooperation. Then the lines of communication between client and

onsite consultant whether programmer, analyst, solution architect or project manager will be

cooperative and effective.

2) Respect for Individual: Integrity

By definition, integrity means adherence to a standard of values. That which is sound, whole,

complete has integrity. It can be bridge structure, a philosophy or a person. The opposite is

that which is compromised, fractured, and unsound. When expanded the term embraces

truthfulness, honesty, uprightness, blamelessness, wholeness.

Therefore the dominant character qualities of such a person are: he or she is one who walks

uprightly, who stands for righteousness and who speaks truth inwardly – who screams to his

own hurt & does not change.

3) Respect for Individual: Excellence

Page 4

Page 5: Datamatics

Datamatics Global Services

Like integrity, excellence is a concept that needs to be stressed. Michael J. Fox, the talented

actor makes an important distinction. “I am careful to not confuse excellence with perfection.

Excellence I can reach for, perfection is God’s business.” A way to encourage the concept of

excellence is to seek continuous improvement in all we do in our company. If it ain’t broke,

don’t fix it.” The continuous improvement way is “Even if it ain’t broke, find a way to make

it better.

4) Respect for Individual: Profound Respect

To put it blandly means: “Individual's worth”. This means there are attributes unique to all

human beings – the capacity to think, reason, understand joy and sorrow & the use of

language. This when amplified means the company must place a high value on each person

and never look down on another regardless of their stature or situation in life.

This literally means that as a company we want our work and work relationships to be

dignified, challenging rewarding and enjoyable. We make the well-being and continuous

individual growth of our employees high priorities.

A value is of no value unless it is a part of ones life.

WORK FROM HOME

Datamatics Global Services Limited has recognized the underutilized potential of the

educated and skilled physically-challenged professionals. Such individuals have shown a

tremendous zeal to learn and are highly motivated to succeed against all odds. Datamatics has

provided such individuals an opportunity to contribute to the organization's growth while

ensuring that they too benefit through the Knowledge Associates (KA) programme.

Datamatics has tied up with a non-governmental organization called NASSEOH (National

Society for Equal Opportunities for the Physically Handicapped) and Amar Seva Sangam

where nearly 60 physically-challenged individuals work as Knowledge Associates in the

Outsourcing Management Team. Apart from these, nearly 20 KAs work from home.

Through the KA programme, Datamatics has provided such individuals the satisfaction of

being financially independent, thus improving their status in society. The programme is

tailor-made for individuals who cannot commit themselves to full-time employment or travel

any distance to the place of work.

Datamatics has also enabled the NGOs to provide opportunities for the physically-challenged

by donating PCs to facilitate their IT set up. Trainers from the organization visit the NGOs

and homes of the KAs to conduct training and feedback sessions. In some instances, a mentor

co-ordinator is stationed at the NGO for 3-6 months to co-coordinate training & hardware

setup.

As professionals, Datamatics treats the physically-challenged KAs on par with other

employees, while ensuring the project managers take extra care and show empathy while

managing these KAs.

ORGANISATIONAL DEVELOPMENT

Datamatics plans foreign acquisition

Datamatics Global Services, the global IT and KPO company, is looking at acquiring

companies in the information technology space. The Mumbai-based company is in talks with

companies both in the US as well as in India. Last year, Datamatics had acquired the US-

based Cignex and an Indian company Vista, both in the IT space.

“We are at present talking a few companies both in India and abroad. But nothing has come

concrete as yet. We have lined up a warchest of about $40 million. We would either buy a

single company or at the most two companies in the given budget,” MR. Rahul Kanodia,

vice-chairman & CEO, Datamatics Global Services, said.

MR. Kanodia said the company is looking for acquisition for expanding financial and

accounting services business. Datamatics is looking for acquiring a company that gives us

financial and accounting solutions market in the US, UK and India.

At present, Indian component in the company’s overall business is low at 10%. The company

is aiming to increase the India business to around 20-30% of total revenues by 2015.

Datamatics is on a growth path, aiming at a top line of R420 crore in FY12 as compared to

R270 crore top line in FY11. It is also looking at increasing the headcount across verticals by

around 1,500 odd people.

Asked about the impact of eurozone meltdown on Indian IT space, MR. Kanodia said, “The

slowdown in the european countries has not had any impact on our operation so far. But a

little bit of impact could be witnessed next fiscal in form of paring of growth.”

MR. Kanodia also said the company is looking at opening work operations in tier-I and tier-II

cities because of the cost benefit it will get in such cities

Page 20

Datamatics to expand operations in Gujarat

After acquiring open source player Cignex Global Holding Corporation, global information

technology (IT) and knowledge process outsourcing (KPO) company. Datamatics Global

Services (DGS) is now looking at expanding its operations in Gujarat.

While the company picked up 72 per cent stake for Rs 120 crore in Cignex, which has

operations in Ahmedabad, Datamatics is looking at a capital expenditure of Rs 25 crore for

expanding its operations in the state. With a requirement of 10 acres, the company is scouting

for land in the state of Gujarat.

"Datamatic think Gujarat is a good destination especially centres like Vadodara and

Ahmedabad. There are currently 500 people in Cignex of which 350 are in Ahmedabad, 50

are in Bangalore and 100 are spread across the world. We want to grow manpower in Cignex

to 2,500 in next three years," said MR. Lalit Kanodia, Chairman of Datamatics.

Last year, while Cignex grew by 40 per cent, Datamatics grew by 60 per cent. DGSL pegged

a turnover of Rs 441.89 crore for fiscal 2011-12 and is looking to become an Rs 1,000 crore

company in next three years.

"Datamatics look to grow by 20-25 per cent in 2012-13 as against an expected industry

growth of 11-15 per cent. Moreover, we also want to look at M&As with anyone who is

adjoining to what we do,".
