In 2016, due to the divesting of multiple

assets 10,479ha was removed from our

disturbed land (B), resulting in negative

7,191ha. However, in 2016, we did disturb

3,288ha (10,479-7,191 = 3,288ha).

In 2016, we re-disturbed 102ha of land

that we had previously rehabilitated

and in 2017, we re-disturbed 168ha of

land we had previously rehabilitated.

The re-disturbed rehabilitated land is

reflected in our 2015 and 2016

rehabilitated land (C). The land was re-

disturbed to mine at deeper levels.

be multiplied by the relevant embodied

carbon coefficient. Embodied carbon

coefficients of primary (virgin) product

represent the emissions of cradle-to-grave

processing, assuming typical end use

patterns. As Glencore's Scope 1 and 2

emissions already cover the processing of

ore to generic metal, such a primary

embodied carbon coefficient would have

overlap with our Scope 1 and 2 emissions.

Instead, we apply secondary (recycled

product) embodied carbon coefficients as

a proxy, as these coefficients exclude

processing from ore to generic metal. The

ICE database (2011) from University of Bath

provides these secondary embodied

carbon coefficients.


This concerns marine fuel consumed for

time-chartered shipping, applying GHG

protocol emission factors for the specific

fuel types. This shipping concerns both

upstream and downstream transportation.

This total was 50% allocated to upstream

transportation, whilst the other 50% is

allocated to downstream transportation.

2017 saw a reduction following

deconsolidation of emissions from

shipping in our Agriculture business.
