• INDEPENDENT GROCERS+7.8%

• Market share of 15.9% and 15.5% for Sainsbury’s and Asda respectively, gives the proposed combined entity a potential share of 31.4%.

• With sales up 9.1%, Lidl became the UK’s fastest-growing bricks and mortar supermarket.• Aldi has continued to experience strong sales growth – up 7.7% – increasing its market share by 0.4

percentage points to 7.3%.• With the disposal of 300 McColl’s stores still impacting headline performance, Co-op saw sales fall

by 0.4% as its market share fell by 0.1 percentage points to 6.0%.

Supermarkets – All categories are contributing to the

decline this month, with Lager (-13.5%) and Cider (-11.0%)

having the most impact.

Convenience – Lager has seen better performance in the

convenience channel +2.2%, but Stout is the outstanding

performer at +8.5%

Convenience Multiples – the strongest area for Ale +3.7%

performance this 4 W/E. With all other categories also

performing positively.

Independent Grocers – All categories in growth, with

stout the standout performer +19.8%

Symbols – Stout the only positive performer at +6.5%

COMING NEXT MONTH – MARSTON’S BEER REPORT 2018

For the last few years, we have produced the annual Ale Report to support our Off Trade and On Trade customers and provide actionable insights to help grow the category and for you to benefit from this.

In 2018 we have extended the scope of this report to also encompass the Lager category and provide you with an even broader understanding of the Beer category as a whole.

We are the UK’s largest Ale Brewer and are the UK distributor of a selection of recognised World Lagers & Craft Beers – therefore we are well placed to offer category expertise across the entire beer category.

To compile this report we draw upon various quantitative and qualitative data sources across both the Off Trade and On Trade. These include IRI total market sales data, Kantar Purchase Panel and Alcovision data to

understand the sales and shopper trends and ‘what’ is happening.

To get a deeper understanding of our drinkers we have commissioned Eureka! an independent research company to survey over 2,000 ale drinkers and 2,000 lager drinkers – this helps us to understand the ‘why’

behind current and future beer trends.
