Data on Academic Aspects of Unaided Arts and Science Colleges
In recent years there has been a marked increase in the number of
unaided colleges and the proportion of students studying in these colleges
has been showing a steady upward trend. This would mean, in the near
future the performance of these institutions will have a substantial
influence on the performance of the education system in the State. In
view of this it was proposed to collect data pertaining to the academic
aspects of these institutions.
Two proformas (Annexures 1 and 2), one regarding the students
and another regarding the teachers were devised and data called for from
all the unaided colleges. The data received have been collected and
presented here.
Colleges
The number of colleges in each University region is given in Table 1.
The number of colleges that responded and provided data is also given in
the same Table. The table also indicates, out of those responded, the
number of colleges that offer postgraduate courses. The list of colleges in
each University region and the code numbers assigned to them are
indicated in Tables 2.1 to 2.6. The colleges that responded are also
indicated in these Tables.
Courses
The list of undergraduate courses offered at these colleges and the
code numbers assigned to them are given in Table 3. This table also
indicates the number of colleges offering each of these courses. It may be
seen from this table that 55 different undergraduate courses are being
offered by these colleges. However, some of these courses are offered only
by one or two colleges and many of the courses are offered only by ten or
less number of colleges. Only seventeen courses are offered by more than
ten colleges. Out of these only six courses viz. B.Sc. (Computer Science),
B.Com. BCA, BBA, B.Sc. (Bio-Chemistry) and B.Sc. (Microbiology), are
offered by over 50 colleges.
4
The list of postgraduate courses offered at these colleges and the
code numbers assigned to them are given in Table 4. This Table also
indicates the number of colleges offering the postgraduate courses in the
different University regions. It is seen that 37 different postgraduate
courses are being offered at these colleges. However, several of these
courses are offered only in one or two colleges. Only 12 courses are
offered in more than five colleges. Out of these only M.Sc. (Computer
Science), MCA and M.Com. are offered in more than twenty colleges.
Approved Intake in UG Courses
The approved intake in undergraduate courses and its growth over
a five year period (1997-98 to 2001-02) are given in Table 5 and Figures
1.1 & 1.2. This Table provides these values for each University area. It
may be seen that in the whole State during the five year period the
approved intake has increased by 124%. The percentage increase in
intake in each of the Universities i.e. University of Madras, Madurai
Kamaraj University, Bharathidasan University, Bharathiar University,
Manonmaniam Sundaranar University, and Periyar University are 110,
144, 136, 149, 38 and 145 respectively.
Vacancies in UG Courses
The vacancies in undergraduate courses at the time of closure of
admission in the unaided colleges during the five years are given in
Table 6 and Figure 2. The Table also provides this information for each
University area. It may be seen that vacancies appear to be increasing for
the State as a whole not only in absolute terms but also percentagewise.
During 2001-02, approximately one third of the seats in undergraduate
courses in unaided colleges could not be filled up.
Dropouts in UG Courses
All students who join the first year do not necessarily continue their
studies till the end of the third year. Some of them discontinue for various
reasons. Table 7 and Figure 3 provide the extent of dropouts in the
unaided colleges. Universitywise information is also available in the same
5
Table. It may be seen the dropout is of the order of 10%. It does not vary
very much over the three year period.
Efficiency of the UG Programmes
The unaided colleges have created substantial infrastructure for
imparting higher education. Use of these facilities to the fullest extent will
be beneficial to the State. The efficiency of the system could be measured
by the ratio of the number qualified to the approved intake, i.e. the
efficiency is measured by the extent to which the facilities created to
educate the young ones are utilised. The efficiency values of the
undergraduate programmes in the unaided colleges are given in Table 8
and Figure 4. It may be seen from these that the efficiency of the system
stands at about 48%.
Approved Intake in PG Courses
The approved intake in postgraduate courses and its growth over a
five year period (1997-98 to 2001-02) in the State as well as in each
University area are given in Table 9 and Figures 5.1 & 5.2. It may be seen
that over this period, the approved intake has grown by 299%.
Vacancies in PG Courses
The vacancies in postgraduate courses at the time of closure of
admissions during the period under review are indicated in Table 10 and
Figure 6. For the State as a whole, the percentage vacancies have been
increasing from about 14% to 25% during the five-year period.
Dropouts in PG Courses
Some of the students who join the postgraduate courses
discontinue for various reasons. Table 11 and Figure 7 provide
information about the extent of dropouts in the postgraduate courses in
unaided colleges. It is 14% or about 1/7th of the actual intake for the
State as a whole.
6
Efficiency of the PG programmes
The efficiency of the system may be calculated as the ratio between
the number of postgraduates produced to the approved intake. The
efficiency values are provided in Table 12 and Figure 8. It is seen that the
efficiency of the system is low and is of the order of 55%.
Performance of Individual Courses (UG)
The performance of the undergraduate courses which are popular
and are offered at a large number of colleges are indicated in Tables 13 to
16. It may be seen that the vacancy position is getting worse in the cases
of B.Sc. (Computer Science), BBM and BCS; it is improving in the case of
B.Sc. (Information Technology); it is no different from the general trend in
respect of the other popular courses. The dropout rates are generally of
the same order as for all courses put together. Efficiencies in respect of
these popular courses are not different from the general trend except in
the cases of B.Sc. (Computer Science), B.Com. and BCA courses where
the efficiency is substantially higher than the average for all courses put
together.
Performance of Individual Courses (PG)
The performance of the postgraduate courses which are popular
and are offered at a number of colleges are indicated in Tables 17 to 20.
These tables indicate that even though the vacancy position is better in
most of these courses, in the case of M.Com., the vacancies are
consistently higher. The dropout rates are also generally lower in these
cases. The efficiency is considerably higher in the case of M.Sc.
(Biotechnology), M.Sc. (Information Technology), M.Sc. (Microbiology) and
MCA.
Faculties
The number of teachers working in each college, their educational
qualifications and experience are indicated in Tables 21.1 to 21.6. How
many of the teachers have cleared the SLET/NET examination is also
indicated in the same Tables. The last column in these Tables provide the
number of students (based on approved intake) per teacher. The position
7
for each University area and the State as a whole are available in Table
21.7.
The overall teacher student ratio is 1 : 27. There are about 6000
teachers in these colleges; out of whom 4% hold doctorate degree and
another 33% hold M.Phil degree. However, only 11% have cleared
SLET/NET examination. Most of these teachers have less than 5 years’
experience (72%) and only about 9% have more than 10 years’ experience.
The relationship between the student teacher ratio and efficiency is
shown in Table 22 and Figures 9.1 & 9.2. These indicate that the
efficiency is not necessarily better in the colleges with better student
teacher ratios.
Concluding Remarks
The unaided colleges are growing in number and during the course
of the next few years, the performance of these colleges will have a
decisive role in the overall performance of the higher education system of
the State. The data presented here may be useful in assessing the
performance of the students, the qualifications of the faculty and the
general health of the unaided colleges as a whole.
