Introduction
Challenges with Backups to Disk
falling disk prices and availability of cost-effective
Sata-based disk arrays have made disk a viable
option for backup storage and network replication
targets . However, simply inserting a cheap disk system
into a backup or replication process does not provide
better data protection or dr response .
disk has several advantages over tape . for example,
tape requires a constant stream of data for peak
performance, while disk does not . Because disks
are random access devices, data files can be more
logically organized on disk, as opposed to the linear
format of tape . disk arrays also simplify and speed
up the overall backup process . finally, disk offers
superior reliability in terms of recovering data .
despite these advantages, disk systems are still too
expensive to serve as more than a small cache to tape .
most enterprises need multiple weeks or months of
quick recoverability, requiring many versions of files
or databases . Historically, tape has been the cheapest
backup solution available, and its portability has
made it easy for companies to truck the tapes offsite
for safekeeping . While disk-based recovery is argu-
ably much faster, at $10-$20 per GB even Sata raid
arrays are far more expensive than $1-$5 per GB for
tape-based backups . With a delta this large, most it
departments choose cost over speed .
today, data deduplication has turned the tables in
disk’s favor . By eliminating redundant files during the
backup process, deduplication can compress the origi-
nal data by an average of 20x, dramatically reducing
the amount of disk storage and the associated cost
required for a disk-based solution . moreover, with
this smaller footprint, the data can now be vaulted
over an existing Wan to an offsite location, thereby
eliminating the need to drive tapes offsite .
Storing backup data on a conventional file system has
risks of its own; if the file system becomes inconsis-
tent or corrupted, recovery data is lost . this is why we
back up data in the first place .

the configuration in Site a provides a solution for
creating tape copies from a data domain system
when dr or data retention requirements mandate
the use of removable media . a tape library and the
system are attached to the mediaagent . the system
serves as an onsite recovery repository and the tape
library provides copies for off-site storage .
With commvault policy-based-management and data
retention, only selective recovery data can be copied
to tape or migrate copies of recovery data after a
specific time period, say after 60 days .
this configuration reduces the overall cost of the
backup infrastructure, which lowers operational costs
and tape requirements . daily backup and recovery
windows no longer depend on the performance of
the tape library . the auxiliary copy window is much
larger than the original backup window, simplifying

full backups took well over a weekend – only to find
on monday morning the backups were incomplete .
the company addressed this by implementing
commvault Galaxy software and data domain
systems, backing up to disk and vaulting across the
Wan at multiple locations . the combined solution
provided a cheaper, more reliable backup solution
with the ability to replicate critical data to an offsite
location for dr purposes and tape consolidation .
using smaller data domain systems, the it department
was able to centralize administration . Backup reliabil-
ity was vastly improved, as was the performance . for
rapid recovery, restores rely on the local repositories .
using a many-to-one topology, all remote offices
then vault across the Wan to the data center in San
francisco, where tape copies are made, thus consoli-
dating tape infrastructure . the company no longer
needs off-site tape vaulting services for remote of-
fices and the company copies to tape only quarterly .
in addition, the company leverages bi-directional
vaulting where San francisco’s local backups are
replicated to new york for online dr protection .
WAN Vaulting using Data Domain Replicator
this configuration also takes advantage of data
domain systems’ ability to make off-site replication
or network vaulting much easier, faster and afford-
able . the system in Site a (“originator”) has been
configured to automatically replicate recovery data
to the remote system located in Site B (“replica”)
using optional software, data domain replicator .
leveraging data domain’s deduplication technology,
Global compression, only post-compressed data on
the originator is asynchronously replicated to the
replica, reducing network bandwidth requirements
by over 99% .
during normal operations, the data domain system
in Site a serves as the local recovery repository as well
as making auxiliary copies . if this system fails or is
affected by a disaster, necessary data can be restored
across the network from the replica system or a copy
of the replica can be shipped to Site a .

the following illustrates an expanded configuration
where a customer has utilized the combined solution

vaulting . the customer, a leading investment bank,

Increased Performance for Data Domain System-to-Tape Copying
With data domain systems and Galaxy’s auxiliary
copy feature, making tape copies is much easier
and faster . a single data domain system can stream
a high-end tape drive for best performance . Since
backup images on the system are not multiplexed,
there is no need to demultiplex them during the
auxiliary copy process . data domain systems allow
data to be written to tape contiguously to speed up
future restores .
Flexibility: Simultaneous Backups, Restores, and Auxiliary Copiescommvault Galaxy enables concurrent read and
write operations to a data domain system, allowing
simultaneous backups, restores and auxiliary copy
operations .
in contrast, since removable media (tape cartridges
and optical disks) can only be accessed for one opera-
tion at a time, the storage administrator must plan
carefully to avoid resource contention .
Given a data domain system’s useable capacity,
ranging from 65 tB to 1 .25 PB, recovery operations
will leverage the disk media (or magnetic library) . if
backups are running when an urgent restore request
is issued, the restore request is fulfilled immediately
without pausing the backup process . With a tape
drive, the backup tape must be unloaded and the
restore tape(s) must be loaded . only when the
restore process is finished (which may take minutes to
hours) can the backup job continue .
Deduplication Storage: Changing Storage Economicsdata domain systems offer 65 tB to 1 .25 PB of use-
able capacity in a very small footprint – a 3u chassis
that fits in a standard 19-inch rack .
this capacity enables data domain systems to store
multiple months of backup images for less than
$ .35/GB, comparable to tape . this capacity ensures
rapid recoveries, taking advantage of performance
benefits of disk .
in addition, Global compression enables Wan vault-
ing economically and operationally feasible .
Global Compression: Disk-Based Data Protection at the Cost of Tape
data domain’s deduplication technology, Global
compression, reduces data down to its raw essentials
by pooling redundant patterns within a file, across
files, and even within a block, and stores only
unique data segments . this compression algorithm
aggressively minimizes the capacity needed for
storing backup images . to commvault Galaxy, Global
compression happens behind the scenes . Galaxy
simply writes to and reads from a large nfS or cifS
file system or a vtl on a data domain system .
With Global compression, the benefits increase over
time . the first full backup will typically see about
3-4x compression; subsequent differential incremen-
tal backups will see 6-7x compression; subsequent
full backups will see 50-60x compression . in a typical
weekly full, daily differential incremental backup
policy, this results in 20x aggregate compression
after 12 weeks .

the following is a customer example, illustrating the
effectiveness of Global compression . two months of
backup data – 7 .9 tB (or 8074 .7 GB) -- was retained in
a system, taking up only 377 .5 GB of physical storage .
this yielded a 21:1 compression ratio .
Impact of Global Compression on Synthetic Full Backups
a Synthetic full Backup consolidates the most recent
full backup (standard or synthetic) and subsequent
incremental and/or differential backups . the goal is
to improve restore performance by creating a full
backup image (or one archive file) as though a full
backup was performed at the time of the last incre-
mental backup .
in the following configuration, a standard full backup
and subsequent incremental backups are directed to
a data domain system . this enhances the usability
and efficiency of Synthetic full Backups since there is
no need to mount as many tapes to create a Synthetic
full Backup . then these backups are consolidated
into Synthetic full Backups and saved on the same
system . this ensures that a full backup image is avail-
able online for recovery operations .
as the destination for Synthetic full Backups, the
system greatly benefits from its Global compression
which stores only unique data segments . Because
Synthetic Backups are created from existing backup
images already saved on the system, Synthetic
Backups do not require additional storage .

Highly Reliable, Proactive Verification of Data Recoveryone of the biggest challenges for tape is indeter-
minate backup quality . a backup process may have
completed successfully but it is difficult to verify
that data on all of the tapes is recoverable . one bad
tape can cause a restore operation to fail and this is
often discovered at the worst possible time – during
a recovery .

commvault Galaxy provides the data verification
option for the contents of a backup . during a data
verification operation, the integrity of data is checked
to ensure that the data can be successfully restored or
copied for an auxiliary copy operation .
the data verification option can be configured to run
after all backups, all full backups, or backups occur-
ring on or after a certain date .
tape-based backups do not take advantage of this
option effectively since the operation can disrupt
already scheduled backups by creating tape resource
contention . the data verification operation for
backup images on the system does not create
resource contention since disk and magnetic libraries
allow simultaneous accesses .
the combination of Galaxy’s data verification and
data domain’s data invulnerability architecture
ensures reliable and successful data recoveries .
Improved Long-term Archival for Offsite Tape Copiesthe combined solution enables it organizations to le-
verage investments in the existing tape infrastructure
to create long-term archives or dr copies, especially
when removable media is required . using Galaxy’s
auxiliary copy and Synthetic full Backup capabilities,
tape copies can be automatically created from data
domain systems .
Lower Tape Infrastructure Cost

Since the existing tape infrastructure is used for
offsite archiving or tape vaulting, any upgrades to

copied to tape . for example, a service level agreement
may dictate that only weekly full backups are dupli-
cated to tape and retained for an extended period .

data movement from naS filers . using ndmP to

High Availability Data Protection Infrastructure commvault Galaxy provides a highly available data
protection infrastructure to ensure the successful
completion of backup jobs . in commvault, a data
path is the combination of mediaagent, library and
drive Pool used by the storage policy copy to perform
a data protection operation . Each storage policy
copy has a default data path which will be used by
commvault to perform data protection operations .

matically switch over to an alternate data path, when
one of the components in the default data path is
