Cedar Falls (CF) is located along the Cedar River and offers many recreational opportunities including state andcounty parks, nature reserves, a soccer complex, nationally-renowned bike trails, aquatic center, golf courses, andindoor recreation center. CF is a certified Blue Zones Community of 40,000 residents and home to the University ofNorthern Iowa (UNI) with 12,100 students and its performing arts and athletic facilities. The public school system isexcellent, and Cedar Falls Utilities (CFU) offers low rates on utilities, including cable television and fiber optics. Median home price is $171,962. Home and business construction has been steady, and the economic downturn of2008 had little impact. 94% of the adult population has a high school education or higher. Unemployment is low,and median income is $45,682. CF is surrounded by productive farmland. The area is home to several John Deerefacilities. CF is adjacent to Waterloo, with 70,000 residents and more racial and economic diversity.

The public school district is facing updating and expanding aging buildings, including a debate over whether to builda new high school and where. This challenge was exacerbated by two new school district superintendents in twoyears, and the closing of a K-12 lab school operated by UNI that caused an influx of students to the public schools. The closure of the lab school also caused a rift between some in the community and UNI and its president. Another challenge is rapid retail growth in the city's industrial park, leading to traffic flow problems and motorvehicle accidents. At UNI, the decline in funding from the state, and increases in tuition, are constant sources ofconcern for university faculty, staff and students.

1) Transition from Preschool-only ministry to combination Preschool and Childcare ministry. Public schools offeringfree preschool led to falling enrollment at St John Preschool and necessitated a change. Remodeling of kitchen andpreschool rooms was necessary to offer programming. The cost added to the congregation debt. Transition hasbeen successful in expanding ministry base. 2) Staff turnover. In the last year our Business Manager, contractAssociate Pastor, Custodian, and Director of Music/Children's Programming retired. There have been excellenthires to replace these persons, but still in need of several part-time positions. Lay leaders have stepped up. 3) StJohn is in a transitionary period with youth leadership. After a number of years of weak programming, an intentionalemphasis was made to strengthen Confirmation age ministry. In August 2013 we began transitioning to a model ofministry where young adult leaders (Lutheran Student Center and others), as well as other adults, are intentionallyequipped (mentored) for youth ministry. We have made great progress expanding our youth participation.

7. PURPOSE, GIFTEDNESS AND MISSION

The mission of a congregation or organization is found at the intersection of its purpose, giftedness and context. Thatis, a clear sense of mission will grow directly out of an assessment of your identity and purpose, your resources andgifts, and your understanding of the needs and trends within your community. Please offer thoughtful responses tothe following questions. ( Approximately 250 words maximum )

How does this congregation or organization understand its reason for being in light of God's call to mission andservice? Who are you? Why are you here? ( You may wish to refer to your congregation's or organization's Missionor Vision statements. )

Purpose

What are your gifts and resources for fulfilling this purpose? What are the congregation's or organization's top threeassets and how are they being used? Are there obstacles that must be overcome to be able to use these gifts andaccomplish the mission?

Giftedness

MISSION OF ST JOHN: "Inviting and equipping people of all ages to be and become disciples of Jesus Christ."

VISION FOR MINISTRY OF ST JOHN: "Living and sharing a life changing and passionate faith in Jesus Christ."

OBJECTIVES: As a community we focus our resources, hope and prayers on: 1. Worshiping together 2. Being and Becoming 3. Discovering and releasing the gifts of the Holy Spirit 4. Celebrating Life Together

Assets:1) The congregation is mission and vision centered. The Church Council is focused on the future while a healthylead staff team focuses on day-to-day ministry. 2) The membership base is largely children and adults in the 30-50age range. This has led the congregation to an expanded preschool/childcare ministry, a renewed emphasis onchildren's ministry via Sunday School and Kindermusik. 3) Increased Young Adult Ministry has resulted in leadersfrom Lutheran Student Center at UNI in our youth ministry, and new ministry to young adults.

Obstacles. 1) Lack of space and facilities to accomodate an expanded preschool and childcare ministry. Renovations toaddress this need were completed in 2012. 2) We experienced a large turnover of key staff over the past year and have used this opportunity to build a high-functioning lead staff team. 3) We have challenges with aligning financial resources with our mission, but are addressing this through forthrightemphasis on stewardship and the three-year capital campaign.

8. SUMMARY DESCRIPTIONPlease describe your ministry setting and position opening in 75 words or less. This is the brief description that willbe publicized.

In light of the way you have described your ministry context in this Ministry Site Profile, what are the top three missionpriorities which, if accomplished, hold the most promise for the continued development of this ministry?

Mission

1) Welcoming and Empowering Members. St John recently completed the US Congregation Life Survey. Itindicated members are yearning for a sense of belonging, and that they are not being fully empowered to use theirskills. According to the survey, 34% of respondents felt their sense of belonging in the congregation is strong andgrowing. 14 % felt the congregation's leaders encourage them to find and use their gifts to a great extent. Thesetwo things go hand-in-hand: people will feel more of a sense of belonging if they feel they are contributing to thegroup and using their skills for the greater good. We need to increase our emphasis on equipping and encouragingpeople to invest their time and resources into the congregation. 2) Children and Youth Ministries. This has beengaining traction. The survey indicated 59% of respondents were satisfied with offerings to children and youth, indicating room for improvement. 3) Offering Opportunities for Members to Explore and Expand their faith. Thesurvey indicated 83% of respondents feel their spiritual needs are being met. However, 49% of respondents arenot involved in St. John group activities. There appears to be an opportunity to offer educational and faith-sharingopportunities for people.

Congregation with 1350 people active in its ministries. Centered on its mission and vision for ministry. Communityworship is liturgical/balanced averaging 475/week. Increased activity in outreach/educational ministry. Highpercentage of young children and families. Purpose focused Church Council/staff. Associate Pastor will be integralto a highly effective lead staff team. Role of pastor is seen as a shared ministry of Word and Sacrament. This ministry will focus on equipping lay leaders for ministry w/ emphasis on student ministries/congregational care.Seeking emotionally mature person with record of equipping others for ministry in a discipling culture.

Our Mission: Inviting and equipping people of all ages to be and become disciples of Jesus Christ.

Our Vision: Living and sharing a life changing and passionate faith in Jesus Christ.

How we live our mission to fulfill the Vision for Ministry:

As a community we focus our resources, hope and prayers on:

1. Worshiping together- Out of gratitude and joy, we gather together in inspiring and dynamic worship to give thanks, praise, and prayers.

2. Being and Becoming- We are a community where growing in our faith and becoming a disciple of Jesus Christ is the work of everyone. We understand we are in a life-long journey of faith, and through the work of the Holy Spirit in our lives we are becoming the people God desires for us to be.

3. Discovering and releasing the gifts of the Holy Spirit- We are a community called to make a difference in this world for Jesus Christ. We know God has a purpose for our lives, and through discovering, refining, and releasing these gifts we can realize God's purpose for our lives and this community.

4. Celebrating Life Together- We know that we live in a broken world, and by the work of the Holy Spirit, we can build life-giving and authentic relationships where people are encouraged and have a sense of belonging. We are a "community of communities" where we are building authentic spiritual connections, inviting others to celebrate the presence of Jesus Christ in our lives, and realizing the Kingdom of God on this earth. As individuals we seek to live the life of a disciple of Jesus Christ by:

1. Praying daily.

2. Worshipping God by living a life of thanksgiving and praise of God in all aspects of our lives, and attending worship weekly to give thanks and praise to God.

3. Growing in our understanding of who Jesus is and who we are to be as disciples of Jesus Christ by encountering the Bible daily.

4. Serving- by sharing our gifts for ministry in the work of St. John and in the world around us.

5. Generosity- by giving financial support to the mission of St. John.

6. Faith-Filled Relationships- by developing Christ-centered friendships and communities to be a part of, and by being mentored and mentoring others in the life of a disciple.

7. Invite others to live and share "a life-changing and passionate faith in Jesus Christ."
