Enterprise Data Solutions (EDS)
The escalating Internet data trac has stimulated anunprecedented growth in the communication data center
inrastructure. Higher bandwidth networking protocols
such as Ethernet and InniBand are evolving rapidly to
support data rates o 40/100 Gb/s and 120 Gb/s respec-
tively. Signicant changes in storage area networking
(SAN) and high perormance computing (HPC) are trans-
orming the cabling technology requirements or data
centers and computer rooms.
The cabling interconnect technology, materials and
construction, plays an increasingly larger role in the
achievable interconnect distances and cable manage-
ment aspects or these high speed-high density data cen-
ters, computer rooms, and equipment rooms. Network
designers are struggling with critical path design choices.
LEONIs EDS makes the right design choices possible.
LEONI high speed parallel pair cables with LEONIsespecially ormulated dielectric enables a smaller cable
diameter; reducing cable density and improving air fow
and heat dissipation within servers and storage enclos-
ures. LEONIZELL dielectrics oer signicantly lower loss
and reduced time delay skew and amplitude skew over
alternative materials.
Due to their combined mechanical and electrical
perormance, high speed cables rom LEONI are also
deployed in mobile networks serving as high speed inter-
connections between racks inside base stations.
LEONIs ParaLinkcable product line is designed and
oered to optimise the bandwidth cost ratio or a variety
o high speed copper applications. ParaLinkhas esta-
blished the benchmark or size, perormance, and cost
over current data center product oerings.
Due to its almost unique value added chain, LEONI is able
to oer ber optic and data cables or EDS next to the
Telecom business units ParaLinksolutions.

Dielectric Technologies
LEONIZELL unique gas injection skin-oam-skin dielectric technology
has been specically developed or the ParaLinkhigh speed dieren-
tial pair product line. The LEONIZELL structure oers a very rugged
and stable mechanical structure with the ollowing advantages and
benets compared to legacy industry structures:
Maximum adhesion to the inner conductor
limits pistoning eects with cable fexure
minimises shrink back eects
o the dielectric during termination (soldering / welding)
eliminates air voids close to the center conductor
prevents instable electrical perormance
Resilience to mechanical deormations
minimises perormance degradation during and ater installation
eliminates insertion loss suck-outs caused by bending and fexure
ensures predictable perormance even ater severe abuse
Colour coding
enables an easy termination
enables orientation o the conductors within the pair
elimination o perormance degradation due to pigmentation
within dielectric technologies
Cabling Technologies
The unique cabling technology used in the ParaLinkmanuacturing
process oers signicant space savings and a reduction o the outer
cable diameter, in most cases up to 15 % and even as much as 20 %
compared to conventional cabling technologies. The ParaLinkunilay
cable lay-up prevents mechanical deormation o the dierential pair
at the same time as reducing the eect o compression on dierential
pairs. Thereore it minimises negative infuences on the transmission
line and
improves the transmission lines signal integrity.
reduces the cables outer diameter
(i.e. 4XAWG26 diameter is equal to that o many
competitors 4XAWG28).

ParaLinkUnique Perormance
The variation o insertion loss (ILV) measures the dierences o inser-
tion loss between channels or pairs. Certain actor, or example return
loss, mode conversion, impedance, dimensions o cable, insulation
materials have an infuence on the pair insertion loss (IL). I the IL
between all pairs o a cable varies in a small range (typ. less than
5 % with ParaLink) the quality o the cable is high and the channel
perormance is predictable.
Mode Conversion (SCDxy) describes the relationship between trans-
mitted dierential mode signal energy at one end o the cable to the
received common mode energy at the other end. It is measured in the
requency domain. The eect o mode conversion (MC) is additional
insertion loss and it occurs mostly due to asymmetry between both
signal wires o a pair. In time domain this eect is well known as intra
pair skew, a time delay between both signal parts at 50 % o the sig-
nal step. Measuring the mode conversion o a cable has the advantageagainst skew measurements, that the losses o the dierential signal
or dierent data rates (= dierent requency bandwidths) will be
visible.
Examples or Mode Conversion:
Insertion Loss Variation (ILV) Mode Conversion
Ideal cable: A symmetric dierential signal is transmitted into a cable
without loss. Tx+(t) = Tx-(t)
At the receiving end the dierential mode signal has twice the height
o the signal parts Tx+ and Tx-. In this case a common mode signal
does not exist.

Bad CableParaLink
I the cable is almost absolutely symmetric, both transmitted signal
parts arrive simultaneously with the same (opposite) amplitude atten-
uated at the receiving end o the cable. Because Rx+(t) signal is close
to Rx-(t) signal, the common mode signal is still very low.
Due to dierent lengths o the wires within the shielded pair, the posi-
tive signal part o the dierential signal arrives at the receiving end o
the cable at a dierent time compared to the negative part. The Rx+(t)
signal is not equal to -Rx-(t) any more. A common mode signal arises.
At the same time the dierential mode signal energy decreases.

high-bandwidth/requency applications.
A ully air-conditioned, antistatic environment and proper measu-
rement xture methods have been created and developed to ensure
the accuracy, calibration and repeatability o testing activities. The test
lab is equipped with state-o-the-art network analyzers rom Agilent
Technologies, enabling tests or dierential transmission lines in re-
quencies up to 50 GHz.
Two 4 port network analyzers (4x 50 Ohm or 2x 100 Ohm) equipped
with the newest PLTS (Physical Layer Test System) sotware avoid the
need or transormers, thus providing accurate measurements o the
transmission line.
Traditional measuring transormers must be used with an impe-
dance matching the impedance or the transmission line, usually about
100 Ohm or InniBand and 150 Ohm or Fibre Channel applications.
They are limited in the measurement o high requencies and cannot
measure mode conversion. This makes it virtually impossible to take
accurate measurements in the bandwidth o interest or the high-
perormance transmission line applications mentioned above.
The lab is also equipped with two Tektronix TDA or time domainmeasurements, such as time delay, skew, impedance and distance
to ault, which can also be determined in the requency domain
using network analyzers. However, using network analyzers requires
signicant margins o error in mathematical transormations rom
requency to time domain.
The LEONI signal integrity development laboratory has extensive
proprietary sotware at disposal to model, simulate and emulate all
perormance aspects o the signal integrity o a given dierential
transmission line, including SPICE and eField models. That, combinded
with 12,5 GB/s Advantest pulse pattern generators, provides LEONI
with a solid engineering base to aid and accelerate customer develop-
ment programs.

LEONI quality managementA consistently high level o quality is vital or our products.
This means that the entire process at LEONI rom a products plan-
ning to its completion is constantly monitored. Our quality man-
agement system is certied in accordance with DIN/ISO 9001:2000
and is updated permanently.
Environment-riendly and sae
O course, halogen-ree versions o a great number o the cables in
our range are also available. This does reduce the strain in the envi-
ronment, it also means less smoke and corrosive emissions in case
o a re or your saety.
LEONI environmental management
For us, business success with ecological responsibility is not a con-
tradiction in terms. Because o this, environmental protection is an
intrinsic element o our corporate activities. Our environment man-
agement system is certied as complying with DIN EN ISO 14001,
conrming that our environment policy is eectively implemented.
