of Students Abroad (DASA) Scheme of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India for

Undergraduate programmes in Engineering/ Architecture/ Planning for the Academic year 2013-14 to National

Institutes of Technology (NITs), Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) and other premier Centrally Funded

Technical Institutions (CFTI) in India.

1. ADMISSIONS UNDER DASA SCHEME 2013-14

From time immemorial, India has been a centre for learning. Indian Universities and Institutes of higher education and

research have made a significant contribution in science and technology and have played a lead role in transforming the

country into a knowledge society. India can claim its position as one of the leading countries providing affordable higher

education to its people as well as to students and scholars from countries all over the world. Students can be assured of

experiences rich in traditions, heritage, and exposure to diverse culture which would enable them to acquire the

necessary skills to succeed in today’s global economy without geographical barriers.

The Centrally Funded Technical Institutions which are participating in DASA 2013-14 have established themselves

among the top ranked[1]

Institutions in the country in both teaching and research and the graduates are assured of a

rewarding professional career. The NITs and IIITs are declared as Institutes of National Importance by an Act of

Parliament and the other Institutions are Deemed Universities. All Institutions are Autonomous Institutions and a

degree from any of these Institutions is among the most competitive of its kind when pursuing an international career

in architecture, engineering or technology. The alumni of these Institutions have excelled themselves in various fields of

science, technology and management in various parts of the world.

The admission to Foreign Nationals/ Persons of Indian Origin/ Non-Resident Indians to undergraduate programs in

Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs) is being offered under DASA scheme of MHRD from the academic session

2001-02 onwards. MHRD has entrusted the coordination of the admission process under DASA scheme for the

academic year 2013-14 to NITK, Surathkal vide official order (F.22-12/2007-TS.III dt. February 25, 2013).

Those seeking admission under DASA scheme have to apply online, fill an online application form and make fee

payment through demand draft / SWIFT transfer / E-payment on or before May 25, 2013. Further a signed hard copy of

the online application form along with necessary documents has to be submitted to DASA Office, NITK Surathkal on or

before May 29, 2013. Candidates interested to apply under DASA scheme 2013-14 should arrange to send SAT Subject

Test scores directly from CollegeBoard, USA, to National Institute of Technology Karnataka (Institute Code: 6530).

Note: The Candidates seeking admission to SLIET, Longowal are required to first undergo 2 Year Diploma Programme

followed by 3 Year Degree Programme in the respective field. On completion of Diploma + Degree Programmes (5

2. ADMISSION DETAILS

2.1 Eligibility Criteria

2.1.1. Age

Only candidates born on or after October 01, 1988 are eligible. Date of birth as recorded in the Secondary Education

Board / University Certificate [Class X or equivalent] or any certificate issued by the Government authorities only will be

taken as authentic.

2.1.2. Academic Eligibility

Candidates must have passed the qualifying examination, i.e. Senior Secondary [10+2] or equivalent [See

Appendix-I] from any system of education as recognized by the Association of Indian Universities

(www.aiuweb.org). Candidate should have completed successfully Mathematics, Physics and one of the subjects

from (Chemistry, Bio-technology, Computer Science, Biology) in 11th

and / or 12th

, as applicable in the respective

boards.

AND

Must have secured a minimum of at least 60% aggregate marks (average of all subjects of qualifying examination

taken together) or 6.75 CGPA (on a 10 point scale) or equivalent in the qualifying examination. In case, CGPA on a

different scale is awarded OR if only grades are awarded, percentage/CGPA equivalence provided by the principal

examination authorities will only be considered. Candidates appearing for the qualifying examination with the

above-mentioned subjects in the academic year 2012-13 and expecting their final results latest by September 15,

2013 may also apply.

AND

Candidates should have a minimum total valid score of 1440 in SAT Subject Tests (Subjects: Mathematics

Level 2, Physics and Chemistry). SAT subject test score has to be send directly through CollegeBoard to NITK

(Institute Code: 6530). Internet downloaded score cards are not acceptable. Candidates at the time of

registration for SAT Subject Tests should indicate Institute code 6530 for sending their scores to NITK. Candidates

who have taken multiple attempts in SAT Subject Tests can send each valid score to NITK directly through

CollegeBoard USA. The best valid score in each subject will be considered for arriving at the total score which

will be used for merit list preparation. SAT Subject Test scores received till May 29, 2013 only will be considered

for preparation of the first, second and third merit lists.

2.1.3. Residential Requirement

Candidates must be

Foreign Nationals/Persons of Indian Origin who have completed the qualifying examination in any country

Indian Nationals studying abroad.

2.2 Fee Structure and Fee payment

2.2.1 Fee Structure

Registration Fee and First Year Tuition Fee: A total amount of US$ 7,250 [US Dollars Seven thousand two

hundred and fifty only] is required to be paid along with the application form. This is towards non-refundable

registration fee of US$ 250 [US Dollars Two hundred and fifty only] and first year Tuition Fee of US$ 7,000 [US

Dollars Seven thousand only]

Foreign Nationals, who are nationals of SAARC countries, are eligible for 50% Tuition Fee waiver provided they

have passed the qualifying examination in SAARC countries. They are required to pay an amount of US$ 3,750 [US

Dollars Three thousand seven hundred and fifty only] along with the application form (i.e. US$ 3,500 towards first

year tuition fee and a non refundable registration fee of US$250).

Candidates from Nepal and Bhutan can pay their fees either in US Dollars or in Equivalent Indian Rupees.

However, in case of Rupee payment they are required to get Exchange Rate Certificate from the bankers and

submit the same along with the application form.

Tuition Fee for Subsequent Years of Study: The annual tuition fee of US$ 7000/ US$ 3500 (as applicable) for the

subsequent years of study is to be paid by the selected and admitted candidates, directly to the concerned

Institution, at the beginning of each academic year/ semester as per rules of the Institution.

Hostel Accommodation and other Expenses: Hostel fee and other expenses, which may typically range from

US$ 400 – US$800 per annum and may vary from Institute to Institute, are required to be paid by the candidate

directly to the Institution at the time of admission. Candidates are advised to visit the websites or contact

concerned authorities of the respective Institutes for detailed information regarding hostel accommodation and

other expenses.

2.2.2 Fee Payment

The candidates who fulfill the admission criteria specified at 2.1 above (under sub clauses 2.1.1, 2.1.2 and 2.1.3),

should submit the print copy of the completed online application form duly signed by the candidate as well as

parent / guardian along with requisite registration fee and first year tuition fee. The fee can be paid either

through SWIFT Transfer or Demand Draft or E-payment. Charges for fee payment, if any, should be borne by the

candidate.

IMPORTANT:

While transferring the money through SWIFT, all Bank transaction charges should be borne by the candidate. In

the SWIFT payment form at field 71A: Details of Charges, type as ‘OUR’. Candidates are advised to ensure that all

Bank charges are paid by themselves.

B. Details for payment done through Demand Draft (DD):

The candidate can also pay the required Registration fee and first year Tuition fee, by means of a “Demand Draft”

drawn in favor of “NITK DASA” payable at New York, USA and valid for at least 3 months from the date of issue.

C. Details for Electronic Payment (E-Payment):

For E-payment, candidates have to use the URL given in the online application form for paying through their

credit/debit card. On successful completion of the transaction a Transaction ID would be generated automatically

and will appear in the application form. Candidates are also advised to note the Transaction ID separately for

future reference.

Note: Any transaction charges towards SWIFT / DD / E-Payment should be borne by the candidate.

2.2.3 Scholarship

a. From academic year 2011 -2012 a Scholarship scheme was introduced for candidates who are admitted under

DASA scheme for undergraduate programs. For more details refer Section 3.8 of this brochure.

b. Scholarship Programme for Diaspora Children (SPDC) is offered by Government of India. For more details refer

Section 3.9 of this brochure.

2.3 Refund of Fees and mode of refund

2.3.1 Refund Rules

In case of withdrawal after submission of application, refund will be regulated as follows:

a. Candidates who withdraw their application, either on or before May 29, 2013

OR

Candidates who are not allotted a seat as per their choices indicated due to non-availability of desired

course/ Institution

OR

Candidates who are not meeting the eligibility criteria at the time of processing the application on May

29, 2013, will be allowed full refund of tuition fee component only.

b. Such candidates, who withdraw after May 29, 2013 OR are allotted any seat as per their choices, and

do not accept the allotment (decline or no response within the prescribed time limit) will be allowed a

refund of 75% of tuition fee component only.

c. Such candidates, who accept the seat allotted and later on change their decision, by not joining and

candidates who have been provided provisional admission and rejected at the time of admission for

want of academic eligibility will be allowed a refund of 50% of tuition fee component only.

d. Such candidates, who withdraw their admissions in the first semester after joining the Institutions or

could not submit academic or other documents in time, will be allowed a refund of 50% of tuition fee

component only.

e. Candidates, who had not submitted their qualifying exam results at the time of submission of

application, may be provisionally allotted a seat based on their merit based on SAT Subject Test scores.

If they take provisional admission in an Institute, they shall submit their results later within a specified

date (September 15, 2013). If they are found not qualified based on their (10+2) or equivalent exam

results on that date, then such candidates will be allowed a refund of 50% of tuition fee component

only.

Note: Such candidates, who have not submitted their qualifying exam results at the time of submission of

application, shall give an undertaking along with the hard copy of the application stating “I may be allotted a

seat based on my SAT Subject Test score. I shall submit my qualifying examination grades at the time of

admission or within the specified date. In case, if I am unable to submit the grades within the stipulated time/

or not meeting the academic eligibility, I am liable for termination / forgo my seat from the admitted institute

and willing to forfeit the tuition fee paid along with the application.”

2.3.2 Mode of Refund

The Candidates can opt for refund of Tuition Fees through SWIFT Transfer or Demand Draft. The candidate should

submit the request letter for Cancellation of Application/ Allotment/ Admission for DASA 2013-14 and refund

remittance particulars using the prescribed pro forma given in Appendix-II.

Note :

i. The registration fee of US$ 250 in all cases will be non-refundable.

ii. All refund requests will be processed only after the completion of the entire admission process.

iii. For refunds, the exchange rate prevailing at the time of payment of fees only would be considered and

the transfer charges as applicable will be deducted from the amount to be refunded. The maximum loss to

a candidate due to fluctuation in exchange rates would be restricted to US$250 [US Dollars Two hundred

and fifty only] on the eligible refundable amount.

iv. Refund will be made only in US Dollars to candidates who have paid the initial fee in US Dollars and in

Indian Rupees to those who have paid fee in Indian Rupees.

v. All requests for refund should be submitted in prescribed pro forma (Appendix II) with the signature of the

candidate. Request through email will not be considered.

2.4 Submission of Application

The submission of application is a two stage process, both of which are essential.

a. Online application (http://www.dasanit.org) and submission of signed print copy of the application along with

required documents and payment details to DASA Office, NITK Surathkal

b. SAT subject test score to be sent to NITK Surathkal through CollegeBoard, USA (Institute Code 6530)

Stage A - Online Application

The Online process involves the following two steps:

2.4.1. Registration:

Create an account at http://www.dasanit.org by entering the following details to register:

i. Username (to be chosen by the candidate)

ii. Password for registration (at least eight characters, to be chosen by the candidates)

iii. Confirm Password

iv. The email address for correspondence

v. Captcha words (in the space provided)

vi. Once correct details are entered, click Create an account.

vii. If the account is successfully created the candidate will get an email confirming the (i) Username (ii) Applicant

ID and the (iii) password.

viii. Candidates are advised to note the username, Applicant ID and password for future logins (for completing the

application form and checking the status of the application etc) and to keep it confidential.

2.4.2 Application filling and submission:

The recommended sequence for filling the application form is given below.

iv. Candidates are advised to click Preview Application Form button to preview the form and ensure

that all the required details have been provided correctly. In case, there are some corrections to be

made, candidates can click the Edit the Application Form button and edit the application. After

Eligible candidates who have appeared/are appearing for the qualifying examination during the academic year

Candidates should submit authenticated residential proof documents at the time of admission otherwise

the provisional admission granted would be cancelled. Hence candidates from Nepal applying under

rejected without any communication to the candidates.

iii. The candidate should ensure that the application reaches on or before May 29, 2013 and DASA 2013-

14 Coordinating Institute, NITK Surathkal will not be responsible for postal delays, if any.

iv. A copy of the qualifying exam marks card is to be mailed to the DASA office as soon as it is available.

v. Candidates should submit the original marks card of the qualifying examination at the time of

admission at the allotted Institute or submit it within the dates specified by that Institute.

2.5 Last Date for receipt of Application form

Last date for receipt of completed application form along with required fee and supporting documents at DASA Office,

NITK Surathkal is May 29, 2013.

The applications of candidates whose SAT Subject Test scores are not received, for any reason whatsoever, by May

29, 2013 will not be considered for allotment of seats in the first three rounds (i.e. first, second and third merit lists).

However, their application may be considered for allotment of seats in Spot admission on July 26, 2013 against the

seats remaining vacant, provided their SAT subject test scores are received by July 25, 2013.

2.6 Seat allotment procedure

Seat allotment will be strictly based on valid SAT Subject Test scores and the choices given by the candidate in the

order of their merit and priority taken together.

2.6.1 Consideration of SAT Subject Test Scores

Only those candidates whose valid SAT subject test scores have been received by NITK, Surathkal directly from

CollegeBoard would be considered for the preparation of merit list subject to their satisfying all other

requirements. In case of candidates who have made multiple attempts, the best of the valid individual subject

scores communicated by CollegeBoard will be used to compute the total SAT subject test scores.

2.6.2 Preparation of Merit List

A merit list of all the eligible candidates would be drawn on the basis of total SAT Subject Test scores only. Only

those candidates whose valid SAT Subject Test scores have been received by NITK, Surathkal, on or before May

29, 2013 directly from College Board, will be considered for merit list preparation and seat allotment. If the SAT

Subject Test scores (total) of two or more candidates are same, the inter se merit of such candidate shall be

determined as follows

By marks obtained in SAT Subject Test Maths Level 2 and then Physics and then by percentile obtained in

Maths level 2, Physics and Chemistry in that order. In case the tie is not broken by the above consideration

then the date of birth of the candidates will be compared and older candidate will be given higher merit.

The decision of DASA 2013-14 Core Commitee in this regard shall be final and binding on all concerned.

2.6.3 Allotment of Institutions and Courses

Based on the merit list drawn as above, the allotment of Institution and course would be made as per the choices

indicated by the candidate in his/her application form. A candidate appearing higher on merit list would get

higher priority in allotment of course / Institution of his / her choices as compared to a candidate appearing lower

in the merit list. In case, Institute/course of first preference indicated by the candidate are not available, he she

will be allotted the 2nd

preference (Institute / course) and so on. Such of those candidates who have not been

allotted any seat will be indicated as choice not available in the allotment list. In such cases the candidates will be

eligible for Round 2 and Round 3 of allotment against vacancies.

2.6.3.1 First List of Allotment (Round 1)

All eligible candidates would be considered for first round of allotment. First list of allotments shall be

displayed on DASA 2013-14 website on June, 01, 2013. Candidates would also be informed of their seat

allotment through email. However, DASA 2013-14 Coordinating Institute, NITK Surathkal would not be

responsible for any delay / non-delivery of emails. Therefore, the candidates are strongly advised to check

the web announcements on allotments.

The candidates would be required to submit their online confirmation for acceptance of the provisional

admission to the allotted Institution/ courses on or before 17:00 HRS (IST) on June 07, 2013. Those

candidates, who fail to confirm their acceptance within the above time frame, would be presumed to be

not interested for admission in the allotted Institution/ course and would also lose their right for any

further seat allotment in Round 2 and Round 3. The seat so vacated would be available for re-allotment

again in subsequent rounds for other eligible candidates. Candidates while accepting the seat allotment, if

interested, can give their willingness for up gradation of Institute/ course as per their original choices given

at the time of filling the application. If in case no up gradation takes place due to unavailability of vacancies

in their higher choices, the previous allotment will be retained.

2.6.3.2 Second List of Allotment (Round 2)

All candidates who were not allotted a seat in the first round and all those who had opted for up gradation

would be considered for seat allotment in the second round as per inter se merit. Second list of allotments

shall be displayed on DASA 2013-14 website on June 08, 2013. Candidates would be informed of their seat

allotment through email. However, DASA 2013-14 Coordinating Institute, NITK Surathkal would not be

responsible for any delay/ non-delivery of emails. Therefore, the candidates are strongly advised to check

the web announcements on allotments.

The candidates would be required to submit their online confirmation for acceptance of the provisional

admission to a particular Institution/ courses within on or before, 17:00 HRS (IST) on June 14, 2013. Those

candidates, who fail to confirm their acceptance within the above time frame, would be presumed to be

not interested for admission in the allotted Institution/ course and would also lose their right for any

further seat allotment in Round 3. The seat so vacated would be available for re-allotment in subsequent

rounds. Candidates while accepting the seat allotment, if interested, can give their willingness for up

gradation of Institute / course as per their original choices given at the time of filling the application. If in

The candidates would be required to submit their online confirmation for acceptance of the provisional

admission to a particular Institution / courses on or before 17:00 HRS (IST) on June 18, 2013. Those

candidates, who fail to confirm their acceptance in the above time frame, would be presumed to be not

interested for admission in the allotted Institution/ course. The seat so vacated would be available for re-

allotment in Spot Round of admission.

2.6.3.4 Provisional admission letters and reporting to allotted Institutions

Only the list of candidates, who are allotted specific Institutions/ courses as per the allotment list and from

whom the acceptance of the seat allotment has been received within the specified time frame, will be

forwarded to concerned Institution for granting provisional admission. Provisional admission letters for

such candidates would be uploaded on the website, and also sent by email to the individual candidates.

Candidates are strongly advised to check the status of their allotment on the specified dates without fail.

After three rounds of allotment, provisionally selected candidates have to report to allotted Institutes

for admission during July 15, 2013 to July 18, 2013. All admissions would be subject to the verification of

original certificates / documents and satisfactory physical fitness as prescribed by the concerned

Institutes during the time of admission.

2.6.4 Spot Admission

2.6.4.1 Internal Sliding

All the participating Institutes would be requested to conduct the internal sliding process after completion of

admission process. After the internal sliding is completed, the participating Institutes will notify the vacancy

status to DASA Office at NITK Surathkal.

2.6.4.2 Spot Admission against vacant seats

Seats remaining vacant after the internal sliding in respective Institutes will be displayed on the DASA 2013-14

website on July 22, 2013. Candidates who have not got any allotment in the earlier rounds and those who have

become eligible later or whose SAT scores were received later than the specified date would also be eligible for

Spot admission round. The details of the Spot round will be announced in the DASA 2013-14 website on July 22,

2013. Spot admission round is likely to be conducted on July 26, 2013 at NITK Surathkal. Those candidates

provisionally selected for admission through the Spot admission round would have to report for admission in

allotted Institutes between July 29, 2013 and July 31, 2013.

3. MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATION

Following information is for the benefit of candidates who are taking admission in an Institute

3.1 Visa Requirement

All selected Foreign/ PIO candidates (excluding PIO card holders) must obtain a valid student visa issued by the

Indian Missions abroad. The visa can be obtained by producing the provisional admission offer letter (received

from DASA Office, NITK, Surathkal) and other required documents at the Indian Missions located in their

respective country.

3.2 Medical Examination

The candidates, in their own interest, are advised to ensure that they are medically fit to pursue the prescribed

course of study. The candidates would be required to submit the Medical Certificate from the Authorised Medical

Practitioner for General Fitness including a Human Immuno Deficiency Virus (HIV) free certificate from any of the

reputed clinical laboratories in their home country or India. Alternatively, the candidates would be required to

undergo a Medical Fitness Test at the time of reporting at concerned Institute. Please note that if the candidate is

not medically fit, his / her admission is likely to be rejected.

3.3 Reporting at the Institute

Candidates who have been provisionally allotted a seat in an Institution in the first three Rounds have to report

for admission in these Institutions during July 15, 2013 to July 18, 2013. Generally, the academic session at each

Institute begins in the 3rd

/ 4th

week of July. The details regarding the documents / certificates to be submitted at

the time of reporting at the Institute can be checked with respective Institutes. Candidates should submit the

original marks card of the qualifying examination at the time of admission at the allotted Institute or submit

within the dates specified by that Institute.

3.4 Branch change

Branch change requests received after all DASA 2013-14 admissions are over will be considered only at the end of

first year as per concerned Institutes’ rules/norms for Branch Change applicable for students admitted under

DASA Scheme.

3.5 Academic Regulations, Placement and Internship

Potential candidates should visit the websites of individual Institutes or directly approach the authorities of the

concerned Institutes for details on Academic Regulations, Placement and opportunities for internship.

3.6 Accommodation

Most of the Institutes are residential and the candidates are required to reside in the campus. The hostels are

generally well-equipped with amenities such as reading room, dining hall, etc. Potential candidates should visit

the websites of individual Institutes or directly approach the authorities of the concerned Institutes for details of

fees, residential requirements, etc.

3.7 Medium of instruction:

English is the medium of instruction at all the Institutes.

3.8 DASA Scholarship Scheme

A scholarship scheme to attract brighter candidates from abroad to DASA scheme in all participating Institutes

was introduced from the academic year 2011-12 This scheme offers a 25% tuition fee waiver during the first year

for the top 2 meritorious candidates (in the order of merit as per SAT scores) admitted in all participating

Institutes. The candidates have to pay the full fee as specified in Section 2.2.1 along with the application and can

get the reimbursement of this tuition fee waiver after the admission process is over. This scholarship is for the

first year only.

4. OTHER GENERAL INSTRUCTIONS

• Candidates are advised to read all instructions carefully, before filling the online application form.

• The application forms must be filled in English only. Application forms, filled in languages other than English will be

summarily rejected.

• Affix your recent photograph (4.5 cm x 3.5 cm) in the duly completed and printed application form.

For admission to undergraduate courses in Engineering/Architecture/Planning, Universities/ Institutes in India

require the candidates to have completed 12 years of schooling (equivalent to 10+2 system of Indian Education).

Printed application form duly signed by the candidate and parent / guardian.

Recent Passport size photograph (4.5 cm x 3.5 cm) in the hard copy of the application form

Copy of candidate’s Passport (Nationals of Nepal who do not have a passport, copy of Authenticated

Citizenship Card has to be submitted)

Copy of proof for date of birth (Secondary Education Board / University Certificate [Class X or equivalent]

or any certificate issued by the Government authorities)

Copy of Mark Sheet of 10th , 11th and 12th (or) Equivalent examination

For NRI Candidates, Proof of completion of 11th and 12th Standard or equivalent from outside India.

(Certificate from School authorities)

Details and proof of fee payment – In case of payment by SWIFT transfer or DD, the complete details

should be attached with the printed application form.
