You can catch Starlo’s ‘‘Tight Lines’’ fishing report on 104.1 Territory FM every Friday at 7.40am. By STEVE ‘STARLO’ STARLING ... that’s right; there is no reel! I’ve written here before about the great appeal of fly fishing and its growing popu- larity in the Top End. However, this week I want to introduce you to a form of fly fishing you may never have heard of. It’s called tenkara. Tenkara is an ancient form of Japanese fly fishing that’s undergoing a renaissance in the Western world, largely driven by American anglers pursuing small trout in tiny mountain streams. Tenkara involves the use of a long (typically four- metre-plus), very light tele- scopic rod or pole with a four to six metre length of fine line attached – that’s right; there is no reel! Tenkara fly fishing may appear to have limited appli- cations here in Australia’s tropical north but, in actual fact, I’ve been having a ball lately targeting species as di- verse as archer fish, garfish, small reef species and bream using this tackle. Our prolific diamond scale mullet are also made for the tenkara pole, although staying con- nected to a larger specimen can be rather challenging! The makers of modern, graphite telescopic tenkara poles recommend a maxi- mum line strength of around 2.5kg (five pounds) in order to protect the delicate tips of these willowy rods. The combination of a fixed length of line, a five pound tippet, a small bread-imi- tating fly and a big diamond scale mullet is a highly vol- atile one, and some of my en- counters have been shockin- gly brief and violent. However, if you are willing to chase hooked fish (an in- teresting concept when shore fishing!) and combine lots of arm extension with the soft hands of a savvy cricket fielder taking a sharp catch, it is just possible to stay con- nected to a 50cm, kilo-plus diamond scale long enough to actually land the fish on tenkara tackle. The feeling of achievement when you do is wonderful! To the best of my know- ledge, no Aussie tackle stores are yet stocking tenkara tackle, so if you want to find out more, go to www.tenkarausa.com ntnews.com.aul l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l TIGHT LINES ntnews.com.aul l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l WEATHER Katherine DARWIN Jabiru Nhulunbuy Borroloola Alyangula Tennant Creek Alice Springs Sunrise Sunset Moonrise Moonset 6:12 am 7:01 pm 4:31 am 5:39 pm Dec 21 Dec 28 Dec 6 Dec 13 Sat Dec 4 Sun Dec 5 Mon Dec 6 Tue Dec 7 Wed Dec 8 Thu Dec 9 Fri Dec 10 Sat Dec 11 3:55am 6.1m 10:57am 1.1m 5:34pm 7.0m 11:23pm 3.0m 4:43am 6.3m 11:41am 0.8m 6:22pm 7.3m 12:09am 2.9m 5:27am 6.4m 12:22pm 0.6m 7:05pm 7.5m 12:51am 2.7m 6:08am 6.5m 1:00pm 0.6m 7:45pm 7.5m 1:30am 2.7m 6:49am 6.5m 1:37pm 0.8m 8:21pm 7.4m 2:11am 2.7m 7:29am 6.4m 2:13pm 1.1m 8:54pm 7.2m 2:51am 2.7m 8:09am 6.1m 2:45pm 1.5m 9:25pm 6.9m 3:32am 2.8m 8:50am 5.9m 3:15pm 2.0m 9:55pm 6.7m Darwin 25 35 0.2 Katherine 25 37 Jabiru 24 38 Nhulunbuy 23 33 Alyangula 23 Borroloola 18 39 Tennant Creek 22 37 Alice Springs 13 35 Yulara 16 31 Location Min Max *Rain Location Min Max *Rain * rainfall 24 hours to 9am yesterday 1008 1008 1016 1016 1016 1004 L 1000 L 996 L 1020 H 1025 H WARNINGS Latest information at www.bom.gov.au/weather Coastal & Land Weather 1300 659 214 Tropical Cyclone 1300 659 211 NORTHERN TERRITORY Isolated showers and storms over the north and western Top End, Victoria River District, mainly during the afternoon and evening.
