HAPPY ANNIVERSARY

Dark Beauty™ is officially five years old! We have made it to the divine five! Thank you so much for keeping our dream alive by your amazing support!

It’s our goal and our dedication to bring you content that matters, that is controversial, and pushes the buttons in what a fashion and art publication should be. If it’s not in the magazine, then we bring it to you online. We are not like other magazines, we take the time to cultivate and bring you work that has depth, and is not all surface.

Dark Beauty™ started with one simple idea, to support artist who tend to be turned away. We wanted to share work that was quality, had meat to it and was rich in a story. I think we are doing a pretty good job at it so far. Five years doesn’t seem like a long time, but in the big picture, it’s a magical number and we couldn’t have done it without you. We are the greatest inspiration bible. We can’t wait to reach our next milestone as we also crossed over a million fans on Facebook.

Let’s celebrate together with this amazing issue.

My name is Camden Sutkowski, and I am a model and photographer. Modeling is a passion of mine that I have invested so much of my time and ef-fort in. However, at 5’7”, it seems as though no one will take me seriously as a model. Since my height made it much harder for me to find work, I opted to build my portfolio on my own. With my creativity and drive, I have taken my own pho-tos to show my capabilities as a model, and I have used the experience to construct a body of work that I can look back on and be proud of. Height shouldn’t be the determining charac-teristic of a model; a person’s ambition, drive, and refusal to quit should be considered. I will not stop trying because I cannot stop. This is my dream, and I will do all in my power to reach it.

In the process of building my portfolio, I also developed a love for photography. As both a model and photographer, I have full control over the photo shoot, and I have the freedom to cre-ate whatever I desire whenever I desire. I have two ways of taking my photographs. The first is the camera on a tripod in either timer mode or by remote while the second is the camera in my hand taking the photo through a mirror. Of course, being one person, there are quite a few limitations, but I do my best to make it work out.

With my work, I like to try and keep a diverse range of photos and themes, but my style in-volves a darker, more sinister tone. I’ve always had a morbid curiosity, and I love conveying it through the art of modeling and photography. My affinity for darkness stems from an unpleasant childhood. In my eyes, darkness is natural and true; it’s familiar. Darkness is what I know and understand, and I want to share some of my ex-periences to others through the use of art.

What caused you to become a photographer/fashion photographer/artist/Designer? Why?

I got into photography originally to take my own photos. Of course, I was interested in photogra-phy prior to getting a better camera, but the main reason I got a nicer camera was to develop my skills as a model. Since I now have that camera, I use it whenever I am inspired. Other than for

modeling, I typically use my camera to photo-graph nature.

How do you manage a project? Do you pre-fer a team, or being a one stop shop? Why?

For the most part, I’ve only ever worked alone, and I sometimes prefer it that way. When I am alone, I have full control over everything. It’s bet-ter for me because I have that instant feedback. I take my own photos, and I can look at them right after I take them to see what I like and what I don’t like. From there, I can adjust everything accordingly and get right back into it. Also, for me, I’m a perfectionist, so I take a lot of time with each look and each photo shoot. The majority of people I have worked with don’t like to spend much longer than one to two hours on a project. With me, I will not stop until I’m more than sure that I have the exact shot I’m looking for. In this sense, when I work with people who like to wrap up quickly, I feel bad for taking up so much of their time, pressured to be done faster, and un-fulfilled after a shoot, like I missed something.

What is your process? Describe your treatments. I have two ways of taking my photographs. The first is the camera on a tripod in either timer mode or by remote while the second is the camera in my hand taking the photo through a mirror. Of course, being one person, there are quite a few limitations, but I do my best to make it work out.

Do you edit your own work? If so, explain why.

Yes, I do. As I said earlier, I am a perfectionist, so I pay attention to minute details that some peo-ple may deem irrelevant. Post-production is just as important as pre-production and production. When editing, you are helping to create the over-all emotions someone will feel when they look at the pictures. My work is my baby in that I started it and will continue to influence it until I’ve done everything I could to shape it into what it is.

When do you know your image is done when ed-iting? What gives you that indication?

Living in the Past25 years old, French, ex model, analog photography lover, prefers girls without make up, disturbing atmo-spheres and outdated films.

What is your style? Describe it.

I am my own style. The photo is a great outlet for me, sometimes a confessional. I would have difficul-ty determining a specific style because my produc-tions are an extension of my own personality. I like that my photos are real, it tells a story.

Do you plan the entire shoot concept, or have help?

Yes, I take care of the whole artistic direction of my shoots. As editoriales stories I like to tell are from my aspirations and my past, I need to control every-thing. Of course once the scenario is set up, I check my teams to reap the critics who would benefit me to develop the best possible shooting. A photogra-pher is nothing without his team.

Are you self taught, educate? College, online class-es, tutorials, Self Taught? What steps did you take to learn your craft?

I am self-taught. When I was a model, I could not imagine to find myself on the other side of the lens. Photography attracted me when I realized the pre-cious from what was offered to me to immortalize. The mastery of the tools then came naturally to me.

I learned from my mistakes and start trying to make things better. I started by argentic photography, I learned to develop my pictures with a very good teacher and now I start from scratch with digital and photoshop. Learning lasts forever!

What inspires you for a shoot? Why?

I am inspired by all the emotional dimensions of life. I like my photography makes its audience react, it recalls a memory, a thought, a desire, always some-thing real. I am inspired by the truth of an emotion.

Who would you like to shoot? Celebrities, model, designer? Why?

(Not original I guess) Kate Moss. To test my resis-tance to pressure. Aha

Who is your favorite designer? Why?

Yves Saint Laurent. I like his style, the elegance of his modern cuts, his ability to transcend trends to become the trend. But above all, I love that he stayed an artist until his death.

How do you want to inspire the world? Why?

I do not want to inspire the world. I do not pretend to be able to. I give just a truth that makes me feel good, and I hope it will be good for someone else.
