An Auteur is a director who's work is different and unique compared to other directors. Its is something that is easily recognisable and uses an elements of film like cinematography and Mise en scene in non conventional ways across their body of work.

We will now look at Boyles work and see if he can be justified as an auteur.

This is a fan made video showing his body of work and what genres Boyle works across.

In this scene from the film Trainspotting there is a clear use of Mise en scene and sound that could justify Danny Boyle

as an auteur.

MISE EN SCENE

The same style of Mise en scene is used in another Danny Boyle film, Slumdog millionare.

SOUND

Danny Boyle uses sound uniquely in this scene with the use of diegetic and non diegetic sound….

We are going to look at Requiem to a dream, a film with similar themes and narrative. It is

generic, dark and drug orientated drama, but Mise en scene and sound are not used as

uniquely.

REQUIEM FOR A A DREAM COMPARISON

Danny Boyle seems to use the same cinematography techniques throughout many of his films, i.e. he uses hand

held style camera work whenever his characters are in harsh or dangerous situations. A good example of his use of

this would be in 127 hours.

CINEMATOGRAPHY

He also uses likes to use a set colour wash throughout his films. In 127 hours, he uses a warm, but bleached colour wash to help bring out how baron and hot the setting is. Also, in the film Trance, he uses a very blue and grainy

colourwash in the majority of the scenes.

Although he uses a blue colour wash for the male characters in trance, we find that he has the female

character in very clean, white colour washes.

In Trance, Danny Boyle seems to use hard light on the faces of his actors/actresses.

In 127 hours, Boyle gives us a great example of the use of contrapuntal and ambient sound, the song clearly contrasts

with the situation.

We also get some good ambient sound in Trance.

SOUND

The sound tracks used in Trance are different to 127 hours. These are more fast, energetic and sneaky.

I chose Cast Away as the best film to compare to 127 hours. They’re both survival films and show a character isolated

from civilisation and company.
