Dear Members of the Danish Society

August is usually one of the best months of the Danish summer. To many of you that are away enjoying the increasing good weather in Denmark we send you our good wishes and ask you to bring back something of the changing Denmark to share with us here in NZ.

I did not manage to get to Denmark this year. Instead I visited my sprightly 92 year old Danish aunt, in San Francisco. She arrived there in 1947 and after establishing herself in the “American dream” has been back to Denmark almost every year since the early 1950s. True to form, as we left she was off to experience the Danish summer again. The call of Denmark sits deep within, even if the country changes, the connection is strong! Many of you know those feelings deep within.

I was interested to note, that she belongs to The Danish Soldiers Club, Northern California, where the average age would be almost 70. They own land, north of San Francisco on which a Danish ‘bondehus” farmhouse stands. As a group they are caring and supportive to each other but it is obvious that they have not viewed the future with any realism. There is a lesson here for any cultural organisation: to keep moving with the times and embrace change.

Contributions to the magazine

Thank you so much to Helle Gilderdale and Erling B. Jensen for their thoughtful writings to the magazine in July. It made it a very interesting issue. We welcome more from members and readers. Send in your letters, thoughts and ideas. You do not need to write a whole page. Short contributions are welcome. Let us know what Denmark is like these days and the current collective attitudes. Write in Danish or in English. Please keep them coming.

Dual Citizenship For those of us that still hold our Danish Passports,

a topic of great interest is Dual Citizenship. Many younger Danes who have settled outside of Denmark because of work or family would like dual citizenship. The very fact that they are not regarded as integrated citizens in the new country even if they have children born in the new country and in many cases can’t vote (this does not apply to NZ) or obtain the promotion, pushes them to desire dual citizenship. The Danish Conservatives in Folketinget (Parliament) sees things differently.

Denmark is one of the few European countries that do not currently permit dual citizenship. We have not heard the end of this situation as yet and it is a matter of watching this space.

This month in the Danish SocietyWe welcome, Folkdancers from all over Auckland

who will be staging their annual Winter Warm Up at Danish House and The Danish Mother’s annual Mid Winter Christmas Lunch. Don’t forget Open House, the first Sunday afternoon of the month, it is a friendly get together and a good time for new members to come and meet with others. Do join in the Film evenings which continue to be a good evening of entertainment and contact with others.

At Valhalla we are grateful to Erik Nissen and Neil Treadaway who are putting in an enormous effort to build the steps, along with their team of carpenters and supporters to make the working bee weekends very productive.

Med venlig hilsenKaren

This is a story which all thirsty Danes ’down under’ have to pay a lot of attention to!

The Danish supplier of Aquavit (formerly ‘Danish Distilleries’ now called V&S Distilleries) used to export their liquor all over the world (see www.aalborgakvavit.dk) and as their web site says: ‘we are the world’s largest producer and exporter of aquavit, supplying over 10 geographic markets’ – but apparently that does not include Oceania anymore!

In January 2008 the former national importer of Danish Aquavit in New Zealand, Vintage Wines and Spirits, CEO Nick Hern came to visit us at the Trade Commission in Auckland. He expressed his frustration at the huge demand for the Danish Aquavit in the country and how the Danish Distilleries refuse to sell to him as they don’t believe that there is a market for their product in New Zealand anymore and for that reason has stopped the export. Mr Hern told us that he gets more requests than ever for the Danish Aquavit and that he was willing to do anything to get the Danish Aquavit back to NZ. In the meantime, we at the Trade Commission of Denmark continue to get a lot of requests for Danish Aquavit and therefore decided to contact V&S Distilleries to find out what the big problem was.

The Marketing Coordinator, Karin Henrietta Christensen, came back to us on e-mail and said she would forward my request to the Export Manager Per Säre.

The following was his answer:

Dear Karen,

I’m really glad to hear that it’s a lot of Scandinavian people who wants to buy our products! Yes, we stopped the export to N.Z. because of too small volumes and too much cost and work with the special labels and transport. I can think to start the export to N.Z. again if the importer can buy our standard bottles and buy

a minimum a full europallet each time and can take the cost for the transport from Denmark. (Incoterms 2000, EXW or FCA). The customer must take the full responsibility if N.Z. has any special requirements about warning signs and special labels.

/Mr. Per Säre

After reading his answer we immediately forwarded this to the National Importer in New Zealand and Nick Hern responded that he was willing to meet the requests from V&S Distilleries. According to Nick Hern ([email protected]) the company never came back to him and in the end he got an e-mail saying that V&S Distilleries still didn’t believe that there is a market for their product ‘down under’. I guess a lot of Danes and Scandinavian living in New Zealand, as well as local Kiwis would not agree to that, which is why I accidentally slipped the Export Managers e-mail into this article:

[email protected]

and appeal to you all to write a brief and polite message with your disagreement!

Our next movie on Friday 15th August will be

“Adams Æbler”Adam’s Apples is a satirical comedy about a priest,

Ivan, who believes his task is to help his fellow men, not least those that have lost their direction.

The neo-nazi Adam is received with open arms into Ivan’s remote collective which already hosts a number of social misfits. Ivan is also somewhat remote from reality and a series of revelations follow which lead to unrest in Paradise.

The movie is set in a beautiful traditional church in rural Demnark. A wonderful movie with a message – well cast, expertly produced and highly rated by the Danish critics.

Finally time for an exhibition – well, actually two exhibitions . . .

One Opening on Tuesday 5 August – Synchronicities – which will be work by James and me – our well known styles – abstract and very colourful.

Another Opening on Tuesday 19 August – Found in Translation – which will be work by Bonnie, Monica and I, which will be a mix of surrealistic, realistic and abstract – very colourful and a lot of fun – and very different from the other exhibition.

So there are good reasons for going to both of these exhibitions – besides wine and good company!

We need your help!at the next Valhalla Working Bees9–10 August 2008 (2nd weekend of the month)13-14 September 2008 (2nd weekend of the month)No working bee in October due to the kitchen upgrade8-9 November 2008 (2nd weekend of the month) 13-14 December 2008 (2nd weekend of the month)We are seeking your support to carry out a whole range of jobs (inside and outside). Our main focus over the next couple of months is on upgrading our wooden steps, planting more trees and weeding out moth plants and black nightshade. Any help is welcome. Some volunteers come for the day whilst others stay the weekend. If you have never been to a working bee, why not come for a visit. If you are able to help in any way, please contact Richard Logan, 480 9883 (Home)

We had another busy working bee in July with 13 members coming and going over the weekend. The weather varied from overcast/ rain on Saturday to sunny and mild on Sunday. The highlight of the weekend was probably the delivery by three different members of the new couch and assembling it, then testing it. The new couch fits nicely into the lounge corner, fits four and is very comfortable.

Over the working bee we completed another flight of steps, planted out 120 trees/ plants, pulled out hundreds of black nightshade and moth plants, stacked forest debris into piles, assembled the new

couch, moved all the old timber from the Cove lookout and the top of the steps to the cowshed area, sorted out the library, transplanted more flax, fixed a fence and collected and took away inorganic rubbish. Overall a lot was achieved.
