DANISH LUTHERAN CHURCH 210 – 10th Avenue N.E. Calgary, T2E 0W9

Sept.- Nov. 2014

The Pastor’s Corner

In Danish, this time of the church year is called the time of Trinity whereas the same period of time is called the time after Pentecost in Canada. Whatever we choose to call the period of time or what color we might give it ( green in Den-mark; red in Canada) then this is the time after the big Christian holidays: Christmas, Easter and Pentecost. Jesus had left his disciples behind but in his place he has sent the Holy Spirit to guide them in their future life, where they are supposed to fulfill the task Jesus gave them upon his depar-ture from this world: go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

And the Holy Spirit isn’t every Tom, Dick and

Harry! The Holy Spirit is the power that encour-aged 11 uneducated men to not resignedly sit down saying: "Go and make disciples of all na-

tions - Well!, it’s easy for him to say that, now

that he isn’t among us anymore! “, but to

actually rise from their grief and without modern technology of communication they managed to spread what soon became the worldwide faith we call Christianity! Could you have done something similar if you

hadn’t gotten help that is beyond human help?

The purpose of the subsequent time of Trinity is to teach us how God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit affects our lives and the way we

treat each other. It isn’t a time where different

stories about Jesus, what he said and did are randomly are put together in order to pass the time until next Christmas. On the contrary, there is a structure in the texts and themes of the time of Trinity. What follows is the structure according to the Danish readings we use at our church. It goes like this! The feast of Trinity (The Holy Trinity) A feast of the Holy Trinity was created by Pope John 22nd in the first half of the 14th century. This feast is not like the rest of the feasts of the church year about a particular work of God for our redemption and salvation, but it is rather dogmatically founded. 1-5. Sunday after Trinity Vocation. Awareness is raised about our new life being different than the old one. About different prioritization with money (1st Sunday). About endurance of the spiritual life (2nd Sunday). About self-knowledge (3rd Sun-day). About hate / love (4th Sunday) and about the different views on Jesus (5th Sunday). 6-10. Sunday after Trinity Information The basic things were revealed by God that is: Access to salvation is impossible for humans on their own (6th Sunday), God cares for his creatures beyond any limit (7th Sunday). The importance of faith and service (9th Sun-day). To hear is closely associated with acting (10th Sunday). 11-14. Sunday after Trinity Repentance. To live spiritually is to face God and repent-ance comes from having much forgiven (11th Sunday). Essential for repentance is to have a right relationship with Jesus (12th Sunday). Repentance by being called to serve (13th Sunday), Repentance by believing in Jesus (14th Sunday). 15-23. Sunday after Trinity Sanctification. We are sanctified by listening (15th. Sunday), or by trusting in Jesus (16th Sunday), or by living in communion with each other and Jesus (17th Sunday), or by having a living connection to Jesus (18th Sunday), or by being noticed and seen through by Jesus (19th Sunday). We are sanctified by fruition of our hope and faith in Jesus (20th Sunday). Sanctification by faith hope and perseverance (21st Sunday). We are sanctified by realizing that every child owes its life to its parents. Likewise, we are like children to God (22nd Sunday). We are sanctified by giving everything we are and have to God (23rd Sunday). 24-27. Sunday after Trinity Completion. The hope of resurrection (24th Sunday). Predic-tions of the last days to come and the im-portance of nor being of the world ( 25th Sun-day). The call to rest for all who submit them-selves to the tasks of living for God (last Sun-day). SPECIAL SERVICES FAMILY SERVICE October 5th at 10 am is NOT a fifth Sunday of the month but the church board has decided that the Sunday before the Thanksgiving Sun-day is dedicated to a family-friendly service with the theme of HARVEST.

Afterwards there is potluck, social together, and the vegetables and fruit given to the church for decoration and for the children to carry in during the prelude are auctioned off for the benefit of the Sunday School. ALL SAINTS SERVICE It is a tradition in most churches all over the world on All Saints Day to read the names of members of the congregation who have passed away since September last year. At the service November 2nd 10 am there will be a time of quiet reflection to let your thoughts center on the ones you have lost and still miss. Even though you have not lost a member of your family, or a friend, or do not yet have someone to miss at all, you are invited to at-tend the service as well. A special invitation will be sent to the families who have been connected with our church re-garding the celebration of the life of their dear ones who have passed away. FAMILY SERVICE November 30th, the 1st Sunday in Advent at 4 pm, we have the second family service this Fall. This time the theme will be ADVENT, and the service will begin with the children of our congregation singing Santa Lucia. Afterwards there will be a potluck dinner. PREPARATION FOR CONFIRMATION IN 2015 September 21st after the service I will sign in young people from the age of 13+ for the prep-aration for confirmation. If you can’t be present in the church that day, please contact me in advance as the class is expected to start the 1st week of October. My contact number is 403.719.3832 my email is [email protected]. Please bring or email me a copy of your baptis-mal certificate, if you have one. - Pastor Charlotte Berg

Some of you might think: how morbid, or I don’t want to think about not being here anymore, but my experience from Denmark where I for many years I arranged these kinds of meetings for confirmands as well as their parents tells me that there is an ocean of questions and answers that are neither morbid nor sad but very eye-opening and very instructive. October 28th at 7.30 pm Criminologist Dr. Janne A. Holmgren invites us to have a view into her world of forensic science. Janne A. Holmgren was born in Hvidovre, Denmark and came to Canada as a child. We are in for a night about a topic most of us only know from courtroom movies. November 25th at 7.30 pm The Danish honorary Consul Robert A. Seidel is visiting us. In his everyday life he an environmental lawyer who works with clients in both the private and public sectors. Robert’ A. Seidel advises clients in the oil and gas industry regularly. His experience includes advising clients on rights, liabilities and obligations concerning environmental issues arising in business transactions and the use of property. Other environmental matters include climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, use and management of water resources, waste management and recycling, as well as the conservation of natural resources including forestry and wildlife, just to mention some of the many things Robert A. Seidel is involved in. But beside all these things Robert A. Seidel is the Danish honorary consul of Alberta.

CRAFTERS’ NIGHTS Every 4th Wednesday of the month people who like to do crafts either for themselves or tor the Christmas bazaar for the Church can join these wonderful nights of togetherness and crafting. We start meeting Sept. 24th at 7:30 pm at The Knitting Room, 5403 Crowchild Trail NW. FALL CLEAN-UP Saturday, Oct. 4th, 9am—1 pm We will look into making our church nice to be in and to look at outside as well as inside. So please put this Saturday into you schedule because the more hands that reach out to help the less time it will take. Afterwards Peter will have prepared a lunch for all who have spent their time and efforts on cleaning the church and its facilities.
