Reading Workshop Teaching Point: Reading in order to draw conclusions about a person using Maritcha by Tonya Bolden. Materials Needed: o A copy of Maritcha by Tonya Bolden o Reading Journals Teach/Guided Practice/Activity o Review with the student’s elements of a biography. o Review how and why we draw conclusions about a person with the students. o Read pages 5-7 of Maritcha. Share my thoughts on Maritcha with the students. Model how to write down my conclusions. Partner Activity: o Students will work in pairs reading pages 12-14. They will discuss what they’ve learned about Maritcha and write their conclusions about her in their reading journals. Independent Reading: o Students will be assigned different sections of Maritcha to read. They will continue drawing conclusions about her life in their reading journals. Low Group – pg. 17-19 Middle Group – pg. 20-23 High Group – 24-29 Follow up o Pick one student from each group and ask them to summarize what they learned about Maritcha and what conclusions they made about her life.
