YEAR 9/10 SCIENCE Students have recently begun learning about natural disasters and plate tectonics in 9-10 Science. In the last week of Term 1, we spent some time in class playing with plasticine and using it to create little models of the three types of tectonic plate movements (Chelsea Dunstan, above left). Students also modelled how convection currents work to move the tectonic plates (above), under Earth’s surface, using rice (made the convection currents visible), olive oil (Earth’s crust) and boiling water (magma under earth’s surface). Our radishes were so big we were able to pick one each and try a taste test (or take them home for later) after washing them! Right : Zoe McRae, Lewis Henley and Deakin Ross. SOLAR SYSTEM DIORAMAS Year 2/3/4 have been studying the Solar System in Science with Mrs James. Students had to choose a planet, research it and make a shoebox diorama of it, with their information pasted around the outside. As you can see, the results were excellent! They then presented their dioramas to K/1, and gave a short talk about each of their planets and the information they had gathered. Above : Barnaby Worland, Audrey Hukins and Ashton Ross.

ANZAC DAY MARCH Ungarie Central School was well represented once again at this year’s town Anzac Service. The school band led the march and played throughout the service, and it was good to see so many students attend on the day. Tamara Mason played Last Post and Reveille (right). Wal Wales and Lindsay Henley were guest speakers for 2014, with Wal providing an overview of the origins of WWI (and the many tragic mistakes that cost countless lives) and Lindsay speaking of his grandfather Albert Lewis Henley’s war experiences, complete with an original diary from the Western Front. Lou’s great-great grandchildren Ruby, Tess, Lewis, Lila and Evie wore his medals on the day (right).

K/1/2 EASTER COOKING On the last Thursday of Term 1, K/1/2 went to the Home Science room and had some fun doing some Easter cooking. They made coloured icing which they used to ice milk arrowroot biscuits. They then made Easter bunny faces on the biscuits using lollies. Mr Davies (right, with Reuben West) and the front office ladies taste-tested the cooking and gave it the thumbs up : very yummy!

ANZAC ASSEMBLY The school’s Anzac Assembly was held yesterday, with many family and friends attending. The hall was decorated with student art, and the school captains ran the assembly. The school band began the proceedings, marching in whilst playing the “Colonel Bogey” theme, and later accompanying the National Anthem (above). Year 4/5/6 performed the song “I was only 19” with Mrs Mason, and the guest speaker for the day was Warrant Officer Class 2, Lloyd Brandon (left). He showed slides of his time in Afghanistan and spoke on the values of ANZAC, using slides of various conflicts Australian troops have been involved in. He also brought a display of old letters written to him when he was

serving in Afghanistan by Ungarie Central School students (right). Wreaths were laid by members of the school and community, and the Reg Rattey VC award was presented to Vanessa Robb by Rob Rattey (above right). Tamara Mason played the Last Post and Reveille, and Seth McCubbin and Vanessa Robb read the picture book “My Grandpa Marches on ANZAC Day” to the younger students. The assembly was followed by a sausage sizzle at the barbecue area.
