Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated nationwide and begins Sept. 15, 2014, the
anniversary of independence for five Latin American countries – Costa Rica, El
Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Hispanic Heritage Month has been
celebrated in the United States since 1974, when President Gerald Ford issued a
Presidential Proclamation extending Hispanic Heritage Week into a month-long
observation. Here at Daniel Jenkins, students from the Spanish class share with the
school a vocabulary word or phrase in Spanish and something about the heritage during
the morning announcements. This is to encourage the students and school staff to
practice and learn this beautiful Spanish language and Culture.
