TEACHING ACTIVITIES

Dan Funk XIX

Statement of Teaching Philosophy Team Based Learning: It is well known in the world of competitive team sport that effective teams outperform any group of superstars who operate independently. This is true for two reasons. First, teams can do things that independent players cannot do however talented. Second, teams motivate members to perform at a level often beyond their natural individual capabilities. As a former athlete and current faculty member, I utilize a teaching strategy known as Team-Based Learning (TBL) that transform student groups into learning teams that display the same two benefits as sport teams: accomplishing tasks that are far too difficult for a similar set of students operating independently, and motivating students to learn at a level that often appears to exceed their natural individual capability.
