    DANIEL 10-12

    AMAZING PANORAMIC

    HISTORY - PART 2

    The Latter Days

Surely the Lord GOD will do nothing, but he revealethhis secret unto his servants the prophets. Amos 3:7

    Chapter 11 is a wonderful

chapter. The threechapters 10-12 are really

one story. The angelGabriel is the one who is

    speaking. He is explaining in

detail to Daniel events thatwill take place downthrough history - right to

the end. It isnt acompletely new vision, butmore detailed informationabout the history visions inDaniel 2, 7 and 8; but this

time in plain languageinstead of symbols.

In order to understand thisstory, we need to look at the

events of history as theyhappened from Daniels day to

now. It can be hard for us todayto find a good history book thatwill tell us the true happenings

as there have been many peoplebusy changing the history books. Also History is no longer taughtin school as much as it used to

be. We are thankful that Jesus

has kept many old books frombeing destroyed so we can getthe facts.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    4/48

Why is this?? Well, Satan is planning to get people to do some thingsthat history plainly shows are wrong and stupid. He wants the leaders ofthe world to give the power back to the pope of Rome like he had in theDark Ages. If people knew all about what happened in the Dark Ages -

they would not be so happy to go along with this idea. SO - agents getbusy and rewrite history - get rid of important history books fromlibraries and tell people a bunch of lies instead.

How do we know this? Researchers have often found out as they wereusing certain books and shortly went back to use them again and were

told they were lost or destroyed.

Daniel 11: 1,2 "Also I in thefirst year of Darius the

Mede, even I, stood toconfirm and to strengthenhim. And now will I shewthee the truth. Behold, there shall stand up yet

three kings in Persia; andthe fourth shall be farricher than they all: and byhis strength through hisriches he shall stir up all

    against the realm ofGrecia.

Back in Chapter 10 the firstverse it says In the third

year of Cyrus king of Persia athing was revealed unto

Daniel, whose name was calledBelteshazzar; and the thing

was true, but the timeappointed was long: This

    particular Time Appointed in

verse 1 in Daniel 10; is theHebrew word Saba. It gives

the sense of an army or awarfare or service and someof the other translations in

verse 1 put it Even the greatwarfare was long; RSV saysit was a great conflict;Moffatts says a true

    revelation of a great conflict.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    7/48

Daniel was shown a greatconflict and Daniel 11:2 andonward is a history of theconflict between differentpowers struggling forcontrol of the world. Thistruth needs to be studiedvery closely.

Lets look at verse 1:Gabriel in chapter 10

described a strugglethat was going on withthe king of Persiaagainst the prince ofPersia, which we know

is Satan. Theres awarfare going on herethat has to do with thestory of Michael, andthe Great Controversybetween Christ andSatan.

In verse 1, Gabriel tellsDaniel that he was alsosupporting Darius theMede. He confirmed andstrengthened him in hisfirst year.1 Also I in the first yearof Darius the Mede, evenI, stood to confirm and tostrengthen him.

History tells us that Cyrus is the one that conquered Babylon. Dariusthe Mede, may have been a relative of Cyrus, maybe one of hisgenerals or some other relation to Cyrus; (some say he was his uncle).Evidently he was put in charge of Babylon after Cyrus conquered it.

Darius the Mede is the one that had Daniel thrown into the lions den.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    11/48

He must have been a ruler of Babylon, but under the authority ofCyrus. Because of that, it would be OK for Daniel in Babylon to refer tohim as the king. He was the king of Babylon, but he wasnt the king of

the entire empire of the Medes and Persians Cyrus was.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    12/48

As we look at these kings, well learn about a different Darius.2 And now will I shew thee the truth. Behold, there shall stand upyet three kings in Persia; and the fourth shall be far richer thanthey all: and by his strength through his riches he shall stir up all

    against the realm of Grecia.

This is three kings following Cyrus, the king that conqueredBabylon. Its an amazing fact that Cyrus was specifically called bythe Lord to bring down Babylon and begin the work of letting theJews go back to Jerusalem. The Lord was interacting with these

kings as they march through history in a very special way.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    13/48

Cyrus, had already been named in the Bible, long before he existed, this truth was part of what gave him the insight and understanding to

work in favour of the Jews.

That saith of Cyrus,He is my shepherd, and shall perform allmy pleasure: even

saying to Jerusalem,Thou shalt be built;and to the temple,Thy foundation shallbe laid.Isaiah 44:28

    14/48

Sure enough, when Cyrus attacked, the special protective gates ofBabylon were open!

Thus saith the LORDto his anointed, toCyrus, whose righthand I have holden, to

subdue nations beforehim; and I will loosethe loins of kings, toopen before him thetwo leaved gates; andthe gates shall not beshut; Isaiah 45:1

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    15/48

There was going to be threekings that stood up in Persiaafter him and then a forth

that would be far richer. The son of Cyrus, Cambyses, was the first of these three

kings and he started acampaign to conquer Egypt

once he was king. He got thethrone by assassinating ormurdering his brother so

that there was no questionabout who was going to

    follow Cyrus.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    16/48

He murdered his brotherand became king. Then hemade an attack on Egypt, and was successful. He

gathered some of theEgyptian idols, wealth, silver and gold and was onhis way back from Egypt.Whether it was anaccident or he committedsuicide, he died on hisway back from Egypt.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    17/48

He found out that aman, pretending to behis brother that hehad murdered, hadtaken the throne. This

man was called Smerdiswhich was thebrothers name, but inhistory hes calledfalse Smerdis. Because

he wasnt the realSmerdis, but he tookthe throne anyway.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    18/48

On his way back from Egypt, Cambyses realized that this impostor had

taken his throne. Some historians say he committed suicide, some saythat he died of an accident. This false Smedis was a Mede and he

wasnt sympathetic to the work of the Jews. Seven or eight monthslater he was dead and the third king came up, Darius, not Darius the

Mede, but Darius the Persian and he is once again, sympathetic to the

needs of the Jews to return to Jerusalem.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    19/48

He puts forth the second of the three decrees that allow the 2300day prophecy to begin. It allowed the Jews to have full autonomy intheir country. After him it says there would be a fourth king that wasfar richer. This fourth king, Xerxes, was wealthy. He put together agreat army to attack Greece but he failed in his plans.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    20/48

The verse says he stirs up the realm of Greece and they begin

preparation to come later and sweep away the kingdom of the Medesand Persians. There were 9 other kings that followed in the history of

the Medes and Persians but only these are mentioned in the versebecause theyre the points of reference that the prophetic record

    wants to give us.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    21/48

The king that followed Xerxes, was the king that gave the third andfinal decree, Artaxerxes, the son of Xerxes. In the Bible record, these

kings have Hebrew names and also Persian names. Cambyses is theArtexerxes of Ezra 4. Darius, the king that was 3rd in line after Cyrus,

is Xerxes, the king that was much richer and stirs up the realm ofGreece against the Medes and Persians. He is the Ahasuarus of Esther.

The Bible record shows everyone of these kings, except for possiblySmerdis, had a direct connection with the work of bringing the Jews

back to Israel. They were being influenced by Gabriel, and other

angels, no doubt, to accomplish this work.

    23/48

We need to understand, here at the end of the world, that nomatter what leader and what kingdom is involved, our Lord is fully

in charge of the situation. The time of trouble is just before us, the greatest time of trouble

there ever will be, and we need to have the trust and confidenceof Daniel. Daniel walked into the crisis situation with Belshazzar,

when the handwriting was on the wall. Daniel knew that, if not thenand there, in a very short period of time, Cyrus and the Medes and

Persians were going to conquer Babylon.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    24/48

He had the faith and character to walk into that crisis situation andtell Belshazzar, No, I dont want your gift that youre giving me but Ill

read this to you, and he explained it to him. This is just what Godspeople are going to have to do at the end of the world. In the crisisthey are going to understand the truth about the powers that be and

the struggles going on in the world. They will have the same confidencethe same trust that Daniel had and give the faithful witness and true

    testimony at the time.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    25/48

A great Bible truth that we see in verse 2 is that God is directlyinvolved with the leaders of the world.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    26/48

Verse 3 And a mighty king shall stand up, that shall rule withgreat dominion, and do according to his will. 4 And when he shallstand up, his kingdom shall be broken, and shall be divided toward

the four winds of heaven; and not to his posterity, nor according tohis dominion which he ruled: for his kingdom shall be plucked up,

    even for others beside those.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    27/48

This is Alexander the Great and when he shall stand up, his kingdom

shall be broken. Alexander the Great conquered the World and thendrank himself to death. His kingdoms broken up. The next verse

talks about 4 winds, and the previous prophecies of Daniel say thathis kingdom was divided into the four winds. But at first there were

36 generals fighting to take control of Alexanders kingdom. Finally it

got down to four. (Cassander, Lysimachus, Seleucus and Ptolemy.)

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    28/48

These four continued to strugglefor the dominion of Alexanders

kingdom until there was only twokingdoms, Ptolemy, in control of thesouthern area of Egypt. Later he isthe kingdom in Daniel 11, that weknow as the King of the South. The other general is Seleucus. Hisis the kingdom of the northcontrolling Syria. The heart ofSyria, was Babylon which was hiscapitol. So the rule is established inthe history of the struggle between

Alexanders generals as they gothroughout time, the King of theNorth, is the power that controlsBabylon and King of the South, thePower that controls Egypt.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    29/48

Verse 4 And when he shall stand up, his kingdom shall be broken, andshall be divided toward the four winds of heaven; and not to his

posterity, nor according to his dominion which he ruled: for his kingdom

shall be plucked up, even for others beside those. So Alexander the Greats isnt going to be left to his family, and sure

enough, one of those generals had Alexanders family executed; sotheyre out of the story. Then its simply a struggle between these

different Generals until finally it gets down to two of them and Verse

5 begins the story of the King of the North and the King of the South.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    30/48

5 And the king of the south shall be strong, and one of his princes; andhe shall be strong above him, and have dominion; his dominion shall be a

    great dominion.

The King of the South, Ptolemy, shall be strong and one of his princes,(Alexander the Greats princes, Seleucus,) its making a distinction here,

the King of the South, Ptolemy, one of his (Alexander's) princes,Seleucus, his kingdom was larger and stronger, more powerful than

Ptolemys and thats where the story starts. The King of the North is

    the stronger, larger kingdom.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    31/48

But theyre struggling with one another and in Verse 6 it says;6 And in the end of years they shall join themselves together; for

the kings daughter of the south shall come to the king of the northto make an agreement: but she shall not retain the power of the arm;neither shall he stand, nor his arm: but she shall be given up, and they

that brought her, and he that begat her, and he that strengthenedher in these times.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    32/48

He that begat her if you look in your margin, it would say and whom

she brought forth. Where it says he that begat her, it is reallysaying her child.

Whats being described here is at the end of years, after a certaintime period with Seleucus and Ptolemy struggling with one another, they decide to form a treaty. So Ptolemy sends his daughter to the

King of the North and says, Marry her.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    33/48

But the King of the North is married, so to do this, he has to put awayhis wife, Laodice. The King of the Souths daughters is Bernice. This

was their agreement of peace. But it says, She shall not retain thepower of his arm.She is the King of the Souths daughter, Bernice.

Shes not going to retain the power with the King of the North,Seleucus, and in time in history, Seleucus decided that he wasnt happywith Bernice from the South, so he divorced her, and re-married his

    former wife, Laodice.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    34/48

Laodice then decided that I cant have confidence in what this guy isgoing to do next, so Im going to kill him. So she had him killed, and

she had Bernice and Bernices child killed, and turned the kingdomover to her son. Thats the story here in Verse 6, the daughter of theking of the South will not retain the power of arms, shes going to beset aside, by the King of the North, as a wife. Neither shall he stand;the King of the North isnt going to stand, because Laodice, his newly

retrieved wife, is going to assassinate him, and she shall be givenupthe daughter of the King of the South shall be given up; shesgoing to be executed. And those that brought her; the attendantsthat came from Egypt with her, all the people that were brought tosupport her as the Queen of the North, they were all executed. And

her son, that she had while she was there, he was executed. And hethat strengthened her in these times, the King of the North.Everything about that relationship was assassinated by Laodice, andshe placed her son of Seleucus in control.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    35/48

But it says in verse 7:7 But out of a branch of her roots shall one stand up in his estate,

which shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of theking of the north, and shall deal against them, and shall prevail:A branch of her roots meaning the King of the South, where she camefrom, shall one stand up in his estate, which shall come with an army, and shall enter into the fortress of the king of the north, and shall

deal against them, and shall prevail.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    36/48

Sure enough, after the King of the North went back on the agreementthat they had made; and Laodice executed Bernice, Bernices brother, then King of the South, because his father had died, was enraged at

the treachery of the King of the North. He came out of the sameroots as Bernice as they were brother and sister. So out of a branchof her roots will one stand up in his estate, in the estate of the Kingof the South, shall come with an army and shall enter into thefortress of the King of the North. And History is very clear that this

    is exactly what took place.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    37/48

Verse 8 says, And shall also carry captives into Egypt their gods, withtheir princes, and with their precious vessels of silver and of gold; and

he shall continue more years than the king of the north.History shows, the Egyptians, after this King of the South had

marched on the King of the North, went all the way to Babylon, enteredhis fortress, and conquered that area, that the booty he brought back

is what had been carried out of Egypt way back when Cambyses, thesecond king (verse 2), that stood up after Cyrus, had conquered Egypt

and brought back booty. It stayed in the domain of the King of theNorth and now this King of the South went and conquered Babylon andbrought it back. He was made a hero because he was bringing back all

these treasures that had been lost so many years before.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    38/48

9 "So the king of the south shall come into his kingdom, and shallreturn into his own land."Which he did.10 But his sons shall be stirred up, and shall assemble a multitude ofgreat forces: and one shall certainly come, and overflow, and pass

through: then shall he return, and be stirred up, even to his fortress.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    39/48

These sons that shall be stirred up are the sons of the King of theNorth. Theyre going to assemble a multitude of great forces. The

sons of the king that was conquered and lost the booty that wascarried back into Egypt are stirred up to retaliate against Egypt, theKing of the South. Sons is in the plural, but by the end of the verseit is in the singular, and one shall certainly come, and overflow, andpass through: then shall he return, and be stirred up, even to his

    fortress.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    40/48

History says there were 2 sons of the King of the North at that timeand the one was incompetent; and he was the one that began thepreparation for war. His generals were so frustrated with his abilitiesthat they poisoned him. And the second son takes up the task and hebuilds a might army and he comes to return back onto the King of theSouth in response to what theyve done. And in verse 11 we see

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    41/48

11 "And the king of the south shall be moved with choler, and shallcome forth and fight with him, even with the king of the north: and heshall set forth a great multitude; but the multitude shall be given intohis hand. 12 And when he hath taken away the multitude, his heartshall be lifted up; and he shall cast down many ten thousands: but heshall not be strengthened by it."

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    42/48

Now the King of the North brought a great multitude, the King of theSouth, angry about the situation in verse 11, fights against him and

prevails against the King of the North. Even though the King of theNorth had a great army, its still given into the hand of the King ofthe South. He prevails, and the story of him casting down the manyten-thousands, shows how God was still controlling and working with

    these kings.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    43/48

This King of the South, that had marched inverses 11,12, against the King of the Northand retaliated defeated their greatmultitude. We take up the historian Prudeausaccount, in the chapter Connections underthe 217 time period, at this point:Philopater, was a fellow of abandoned lustand dissipation. He was so elated by hisvictory over Antiochus that he held

processions through the provinces. He hadconquered a lot of provinces, so as he wascoming back to Egypt, he celebrated and hadprocessions through each area. He enteredJerusalem and after a blasphemous act of

offering sacrifices to God, he tried to enterthe Most Holy Place of the temple, in spite ofthe protest and entreaties of the Jews incharge.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    44/48

The historian says; He was smitten from Godwith such a terror and confusion of mind thathe was carried out of the place in a mannerhalf dead. On this he departed fromJerusalem, filled with great wrath againstthe whole nation of the Jews for that whichhappened to him in that place and ventingmany threatenings against them for it.In verse 12, it talks about him casting downmany ten-thousands and its describing hisretaliation against the Jews for this

    incident.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    45/48

In vengeance for his disgrace at Jerusalem he returned to hiscountry and endeavoured to force the many Jews in Egypt to sacrificeto Egypts heathen gods and renounce their worship of Jehovah. When300 Jews adopted the heathen religion, they were excommunicated

by the Jewish society. Regarding this as a further insult to himself,Philopater determined to destroy the Jews in his dominion andcommanded that as many as could be rounded up, be brought in chainsto Alexandria.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    46/48

These were placed in a large arena, and it was proposed that on acertain day, a great public spectacle would be made, by turning wildand drunken elephants upon them. The devout Jews earnestly calledupon God and when the appointed time came, the drunken andmaddened beasts were let loose.

  • 7/27/2019 Daniel 10 12b

    47/48

But they turned their rage upon all those who came to see the showand destroyed great numbers of them. Besides, several appearanceswere soon seen in the air, which much frightened the king and all thespectators. All which, manifesting the interposal of Divine power in theprotection of those people. Philopater durst not any longer prosecute

his rage against them, but ordered them to be all set free and fearingthe Divine vengeance upon him in their behalf, he restored them to alltheir privileges, rescinding and revoking all his decrees, which he hadpublished against them.Three years afterwards however, in 213 BC, Philopater, on another

pretext slew 40,000 Jews. Thus he cast down ten-thousands.
