She will present “Made in Shenzhen,” a dance performance inspired by her drama immersion into the city’s multifaceted culture, at a free salon Friday night. Nakawesa was first exposed to contemporary dance in 2001, while she was a student of electrical engineering at Makerere University Kampala in Uganda. She is developing a practice of “applied dance,” a term she’s coined to refer to the concept of making dance relevant to every- day living and global develop- ment. She said that during her stay in Shenzhen, she has had the privilege of collaborating with local artists, makers and dwellers. She is the artistic director of Beautiful Feet Dance Company, which has mostly engaged in projects with female dancers. She is also the co-founder of Clay Dance Company, which runs programs to mentor young people through dance. She was the creative director of Viva! from 2011-2016, a program of Viva Ltd., a health and well- ness company which employs dance, among other tools, to help people experience holistic living. Handshake 302, a project initiated by Shenzhen-based U.S. anthropologist Mary Ann O’Donnell, engages with Shen- zhen’s urban village Baishizhou through art, theater and social media documentary projects. Tregomain gained fame in Europe with his albums “My Cold Song” (2010) and “Shelter” (2015). In 2008, he won the first prize of Crest Jazz Vocal contest in France and was selected by Jazz Magazine among the “most essential male singers” in 2012. Tregomain played with his quartet at festivals and in jazz clubs throughout Europe and gained a solid reputation for his stage performances and improvisation. Radio France invited him to record a concert and German newspaper Suddeutsche Zeitung commented that he was “an artist with an extremely colorful voice.” By exploring new musical hori- zons, such as Baroque counter- tenor and Sufi music, Tregomain has expanded his vocal technique and “deepened his inner connec- tion between music and emotion,” he described. His second album “Shelter” illus- trates his quest for a universal lan- guage where jazz music appears as the meeting point of various influ- ences such as pop, classical music and French chanson. French jazz singer Pierre de Trego-main with his quartet will present a night of jazz songs at B10 Live on Sunday.
