Dance Movement Therapist

Dance movement therapists use movement and dance within a therapeutic environment to help individuals of all ages who are experiencing physical, psychological, emotional or mental problems.

Dance therapists work with adults and children who are suffering symptoms including depression, anxiety, learning difficulties, dementia, autism, behavioral problems or emotional problems.

Perform controlled sessions where dance, physical movement and communication are used to observe and explore behaviour, attitude and emotions.

Responsibilities of job:

Assessing clients needsPlanning and providing appropriate treatmentActively participating in sessions and encouraging the client to do the sameHelping clients understand inner conflicts through role play and self-realisationExploring a variety of dance styles and movements and music resourcesWriting reportsMaintaining confidential notesReporting progress to colleagues

Dance therapy is a small profession so attracts a lot of competition.

Qualifications and training required

Must obtain an Association for Dance Movement Therapy (ADMT) UK accredited postgraduate qualification in dance movement therapy. Relevant experience prior to postgraduate study is normally essential: most course providers require candidates to possess modern or classical dance training and experience. An honors degree in dance, movement, performing arts, psychology, nursing or medicine can be beneficial.
