Three inspirational independent artists exploring three very differenttakes on what it means to be a dancer.

Matthias Sperling and Rachel Krische don superhero lycra and boldlydelve into the relationship between body and mind. Both humorousand deadly serious, Do Not Be Afraid proposes that the danceperformer’s superpower is the ability to make their mind visible foran audience, in and through their body.

TIME/DROPPER is a solo created and performed by Jose Agudo.Jose is currently Rehearsal Director for the Akram Khan Companyand has recently choreographed a new work for Phoenix DanceTheatre. TIME/DROPPER exhibits a subtle interplay betweenmovement and light. Jose is transported through a visual hinterlandof memories, combining highly physical choreography with poignantmoments of intimacy.

Evolution is an autobiographical solo that traces ClaireCunningham’s journey into dance and the continuing impact thatdance has on her body. Claire’s crutches become extensions of herbody, creating her own individual vocabulary. It tells the upliftingstory of one woman’s exploration of dance, celebrating its liberatingpossibilities.

An insight into the diverse art of solo performance. The acid test ofa solo is having something to say and a unique way of saying it.

Lucy Suggate’s Bonedust is a danse macabre for the 21st century.Inspired by medieval images of the dancing skeleton who personifieddeath, it asks, “If I no longer have my body, what will I dance?”

Ultimate Dancer presents Intercourse, a work created incollaboration with dance critics, which imagines the relationshipbetween critic, performer and audience as an act of sexualintercourse.

Riccardo Meneghini’s Je me souviens is a slowly unfolding lastgoodbye to someone who already left – an untangling andunfastening of thoughts and memories.

“I am not eccentric. It’s just that I am more alive than most people.”

Eleanor Perry’s Edith is a portrait of Edith Sitwell, the “highpriestess of 20th century poetry.”

The art of the uneven relationship – curated by Beth Cassani

Is a danced duet a type of double act? Is a double act always humorous?

Is choreography an implicit part of a double act relationship?

Terrorists of the Heart is a duet by long-term collaborators JulesDorey Richmond and David Richmond – a meditation onparenthood, ageing, grief and loss, as well as a political manifesto withsome Morris dancing. It has been said that collaboration is ‘an affairof the mind’. For Jules and David it has been rather more – not onlyare they artistic partners, but they’re married, and parents.

Oliver Bray and Rachel Krische present Ryan, a dance / singing /performance work featuring a collision of practices, a few ‘experts’,a beautiful dream and a charity single – God Bless ‘the Movie’.

DeNada Dance Theatre’s Young Man! is a lustful, kitschy duel ofseduction, examining the experience of gay men in Spain during the60s and 70s. This eerie, quirky duet about two men is performed bytwo women, and choreographed by Carlos Pons Guerra.

The curtain is opened to the secrecy of intimate relationships attheir breaking point. Witness a man’s explosion of unbridledtestosterone amidst surprising tenderness following his wife’s deceit. He’s on a slippery slope, he needs pulling back, and you better watchhim!

Dogs Land is provocative and outrageously profane, a new hard-hitting contemporary dance theatre work by Douglas Thorpe.

Douglas’s work has toured the UK and Europe earning him thereputation for making highly physical dance theatre at its most fierce, exciting and challenging. He seamlessly marries visceral movementwith text; it is honest and at times harsh in its reality, but mostcompelling in his genuine approach to creating original worksfocussed around strong themes.

Douglas has been tipped to be one of the most important voices inUK dance. Dogs Land promises to be a physically and emotionallyenthralling evening that speaks to people about themes that oftenoccur behind closed doors.

In this preview of a brand new solo performance by the doyenne ofanarchic dance, Liz Aggiss becomes a cultural carrier – a conduit tochannel willful women and a cultural carrion – a vulture feeding offarchives and resources. She is a witty commentator on life anddeath, on the pain, pleasure and paradox of the stage.

THE ENGLISH CHANNEL is powerful burn for the ears and eyes. Inthis state of chaos anything can happen, nobody can leave, everyoneis present. Knock twice for yes.

Using her body as the medium through which to act out and act up,Liz Aggiss reveals the tricks of her trade accompanied by visceralsound-scape and film. Breaking through, but never crossing over,THE ENGLISH CHANNEL is a reflection on life and dance;a cunning connection to the ‘other side.’

Is anybody out there?
