Filippa Giordano

8th of March (19.30): Venue: Thailand Cultural Centre (Main Hall)

Fillippa Giodano is a uniquely talented Italian singer who is well-known throughout Europe. Musically, she has a classical background; both of her parents were opera singers and her brother is a professional cellist, and she often incorporates operatic numbers into her work. Initially she trained as a dancer at Italy’s National Dance Academy but soon returned to her roots as a singer, having been inspired by her pop heroes. She took to the stage and has never looked back. Fillippa is noted for being able to sing in a range of styles. After training her voice to tackle more challenging operatic pieces, she attracted the attention of David Foster, a producer who has worked with talents like Whitney Houston and Barbara Streisand. Together they made an album that combined pop and opera. The 1998 release Passioni (The 2000 international release was called simply Filippa Giordano) was an instant success and since then, Filippa has sung with stars such as Pavarotti and Sting and performed for audiences that include HRH Prince Charles, Giorgio Armani and Riccardo Muti of the La Scala Opera House. Jim Morey, manager of stars like Mariah Carey, the late Michael Jackson and Vanessa Williams told Filippa that he was honoured to have her on his books. So as to include some local talent in her upcoming Bangkok concert, Fillippa is now working with dancers from the School of Performing Arts Dance Centre in Thailand who will perform as part of her stage show.

South Korean B-Boyz City.

9-10th March (19.30): Venue: SF World Max Screen 7th Floor Central World

This show probably is one of the festival’s most anticipated events, not only for young Thai people who are obsessed with everything Korean at the moment, but also for lovers of the modern dance form B-Boy; better known to children of the 80s as break-dancing. B-Boy differs from traditional break-dancing in that there is an element of modern hiphop included in the routines.

This Korean team called Gamblerz, have come fresh from Houston Texas where they beat last year's champions, “The Vicious Turkey Crew” in the competitive B-Boy hoedown dance-off competition. Choi Ji-hun, of Gambler’s management agency, said, “It’s meaningful that Gambler won the competition upon its first invitation, showing South Korean B-boys’ world-class capability.” Their success is all the more amazing when you consider that this is a dance genre that’s usually dominated by western dance crews. They have also won competitions in Germany, the UK (2004) and France (2005). Now Gambler are bringing their skills to Thailand where they are determined to wow the crowds and, almost certainly, start a brand new dance craze among Thailand's youth.

Mummenschanz

13th -14th March (19.30): Venue: SF World Max Screen 7th Floor Central World

The name Mummenschanz translates as masquerade, which seems about right for this visual theatre group which, since 1972 has evoked all the fun and fantasy of a masquerade ball. When they partnered with Italian American Floriana Frassetto, Swiss duo Bernie Schürch and Andres Bossard set out to create an innovative form of theatre that would awaken a sense of exuberance and imagination in their audience. Despite being multi-lingual themselves, the trio wanted to invent a new type of art that would transcend language and overcome barriers of nationality and culture.

For nearly four decades they have performed their non-verbal shows around the world, thrilling crowds at the most renowned festivals. They were in residence at Broadway’s Bijou theatre for three years and wowed the critics with spell-binding stories and larger-than-life characters. As well as using face-masks, sumptuous costumes and sculptured heads to get their message across, Mummenschanz can also make magic of the mundane, by using everyday objects to tell a story.

Knowing that emotions and human relationships are similar the world over, Mummenschanz can appeal to a range of audiences and cross wide cultural boundaries. And although Andres Bossard sadly passed away in 1992, long time supporter, Jörg Tobler stepped in, along with new faces, to ensure that the show always goes on. Mummenschanz’s Bangkok performances will be accessible to everyone in the audience, whatever their background.

Blacklight Theatre.

13th – 14th March (19.30): Venue: SF World Max Screen 7th Floor Central World

The past five decades have seen this Czech theatre ensemble participate in festivals on six continents, impressing millions with its unique blend of black light entertainment and drama. If you are not familiar with the art form, black light theatre is characterised by the use of UV light, a darkened stage and black curtains. By using fluorescent costumes, acrobatics and mime, some spectacular effects can be produced. Objects and actors appear to hover in mid-air, and a kaleidoscope of colours dazzles the audience. Though most often associated with the city of Prague, black light theatre is thought to have originated in Asia, so in many ways, their appearance at the International Dance Festival marks a home-coming for the troupe.

Since it was founded in 1961, the Black Light Theatre has been among the most innovative Czech theatre troupes. But the founder and artistic director, Jiří Srnec, didn’t want the so-called “black cabinet” trick to be the only means of attracting and impressing his audience; more important is the plot, the music and the message that comes across to people. And The Black Light Theatre has now told its enchanting tales to over five million people, garnering critical praise and international awards. The New York Post described the company as “The most original stage organization in the world.” So the shows that they are doing for the International Dance Festival are sure to be fantastic fun for audiences of all ages.
