ECHT VISUAL Carlow presents ECHT by Welsh artist Bedwyr Williams.

Bedwyr Williams is interested in the worst, worst-case scenarios and the people that get caught up in them; average sized people in over-sized situations.

ECHT presents a full size diorama of such an encounter- trees are upended, a bus has been abandoned and people’s possessions lie scattered. This immersive installation envelops visitors in a dystopian future, a tale of societal greed, where kings are hoarders and status is based on conspicuous consumption.

Associated Events:Artist performance and artist’s talk with Bedwyr Williams (musical accompaniment by Blaise Smith and the Aristotle Trio). Sat 6th June, 3.30pm, Free Places are limited, reserve at Box Office 059 9172400

Exchange(AR) Exchange is a design research project using augmented reality (AR)1 and exploring the fault lines between audience and institution — co-produced between VISUAL, designCORE, Institute of Technology, Carlow, and Blippar UK2. The project will launch in VISUAL on Thurs 4th June, as part of FAULTLINES, a conference on Irish Design Research led by designCORE and Institute of Technology, Carlow. This event will also include the launch of ITERATIONS, Ireland’s first Design Journal, in association with Design Factors, University of Limerick, and supported by ID20153.

1 Augmented reality (AR) refers to the technology that offers a real-time view of one’s immediate surroundings, altered or enhanced by computer-generated information.

2 Blippar is a browser enabling people to ‘blipp’ any object and instantly receive information about it via smartphone. Using proprietary, best-in-class technologies including image recognition and augmented reality (AR), Blippar unlocks interactive digital content experiences in real time. Determined to steer the growth of the AR industry, Blippar acquired Layar in June 2014, a pioneering AR company founded in the late 2000s. The combined user base (50m+), data and technology makes Blippar the world’s most influential AR company. Download the Blippar app to unlock the content.

3 2015 has been designated Year of Irish Design, and ID2015 has been convened under the patronage of President of Ireland Michael D.Higgins and the Design & Crafts Council of Ireland.

To experience a blipp, download the blippar app for iphone, ipad or android, and scan this page!

Gimme More In collaboration with EPFL+ECAL Lab Switzerland, VISUAL presents two works from the ground-breaking ‘Give Me More’ exhibition, exploring the link between the physical and digital worlds via augmented reality-based immersive installations. The exhibition was awarded the DMY International Design Festival Berlin Prize 2010, and previous incarnations have travelled to London, Milan, Paris, San Francisco and New York. In these works, the public is more than an audience; through their presence they become participants.

Love Is Strange

Tues 11th August, 8pm€7/5.50

A poignant tale of life, love and the afterlife. Meticulous and organised to the point of obsession, John May (Eddie Marsan) is a council worker charged with finding the next of kin of those who have died alone. When his department is downsized, John must up his efforts on his final case, taking him on a liberating journey that allows him to start living life at last. A great cast brings charm and depth to this strong effort by Uberto Pasolini, director of the critically-acclaimed Machan.

Mr Turner explores the last quarter century of the great if eccentric British painter J.M.W. Turner (1775-1851). Profoundly affected by the death of his father, loved by a housekeeper he takes for granted and occasionally exploits sexually, he forms a close relationship with a seaside landlady with whom he eventually lives incognito in Chelsea, where he dies. Throughout this, he travels, paints, stays with the country aristocracy, visits brothels, is a popular if anarchic member of the Royal Academy of Arts, has himself strapped to the mast of a ship so that he can paint a snowstorm, and is both celebrated and reviled by the public and by royalty.

Ben and George are a New York couple who have decided to get married after being together for over 20 years. They mark their union surrounded by devoted friends and family, but when there are unforeseen consequences to their nuptial celebrations, there is only scant, reluctant support from those who cheered them at their wedding. These men may be too old and set in their ways to adapt to new circumstances, but that is exactly what they will have to do if they are going to spend the rest of their lives together. With notable performances from John Lithgow and Alfred Molina as the couple confronted with an unexpected struggle, the latest film from Ira Sachs (Keep the Lights On, Forty Shades of Blue) is a funny, beautifully observed critique of faux liberal attitudes and a touching celebration of enduring love. Notes by Michael Hayden.

Kumiko: The Treasure Hunter

Director: David and Nathan HunterLanguage: English and Japanese/ 105 mins, Cert: Club

Tues 15th September, 8pm€7/5.50

Office worker Kumiko (Rinko Kikuchi, Babel) leads a melancholy existence in Tokyo, forcefully encouraged by her boss to move on, harangued by her mother for being unmarried and childless, and friendless but for her rabbit. Painfully shy and withdrawn, Kumiko obsesses over a videotape of the Coen Brothers’ Fargo (1996), watching repeatedly the scene in which Steve Buscemi buries a briefcase of money by the side of the road. Fooled by the film’s claim to be based on a true story, and believing she knows the location of the briefcase, she travels to Minnesota on a quixotic quest, hindered and helped by the people she meets along the way, most notably a kindly police officer (director David Zellner).

Kikuchi is superb as the mumbling, bedraggled Kumiko, endearing a difficult character to the audience in an eccentric fairy tale.

With smoke and mirrors and hidden trapdoors he’ll show you how this sure-footed feline fools both the King and the Ogre to put his master at the top. With a host of puppets, a working windmill and an avalanche of fruit and nuts come and see this classic furry tail, it’s the cat’s whiskers!

Separated at BirthThe Lighter Side of Adoption by two Comedy Orphans. Having spent most of his life coming to on hospital gurneys, sometime in 2002 PJ Gallagher finally decided to unearth his medical history and dig up his DNA. Siobhan is looking for love and very determined but there are obstacles to her achieving what she craves. One of which happens to be a terribly beautiful Charolais heifer, who appears to be vying for the affections of Siobhan’s fella. Dance Artist in Residence and choreographer Emma Martin will show a preview of her new work this October, a dance piece for five dancers exploring pleasure, recklessness and purity.

Embracing the notion of the human soul as a madhouse (Fernando Pessoa) the piece is an exploration of dance as dissonant pleasure and the fearless expression of the soul. In partnership with Crash Ensemble, Ireland’s foremost contemporary music ensemble, Emma has commissioned composer Andrew Hamilton to write a score for piano, percussion and cello. This residency is in collaboration with the local Authority Arts Office.

Bunaithe ar an úrscéal le Joseph O’Connor

It is the winter of 1847, and the Famine-ship Star of the Sea sets sail for the Promised Land… heart-breaking and lyrical, Star of the Sea moves seamlessly between Connemara, London, and the confines of the Famine-ship in a gripping story of revenge and forgiveness. “I am going to America shortly and will never come home again, so I want to say what follows and hope ye and yeer men act on it.”

Insíonn Star of the Sea scéal na gcarachtar óna n-óige i gConamara go dtí aimsir an Drochshaoil. Ag an am céanna, leanann sé an meath a tháinig ar na tionóntaí bochta, ar bhásaigh na milliúin acu, de bharr an Ghorta.

Tugann an dráma le chéile an fhoireann chéanna a cheap an dráma Tromluí Phinocchio, a bhuaigh Gradam Stewart Parker in 2013. I gcomhar leis An Taibhdhearc, Amharclann Náisiúnta na Gaeilge, tá bealaí nua á lorg ag Moonfish chun amharclannaíocht na Gaeilge a chruthú.

“Níor chuala mé a leithéid de chiúnas marfach ar fud na talún reoite riamh roimhe sin. Bhí sé mar a bheadh an domhan ar fad ag fáil bháis go ciúin.”
