A NEW ADVENTURES PRODUCTION

Direct from sell-out success in London and Edinburgh International Festival, Oscar Wilde’s gothic fable becomes a darkly seductive dance theatre event from master storyteller Matthew Bourne.

Set in the image-obsessed world of contemporary art and politics, this ‘black fairy tale’ tells the story of an exceptionally alluring young man who makes a pact with the devil. Amongst London’s beautiful people, Dorian Gray is the ‘It Boy’ – an icon of beauty and truth in an increasingly ugly world.

The destructive power of beauty, the blind pursuit of pleasure and the darkness and corruption that lie beneath the charming façade; the themes behind Wilde’s cautionary tale have never been more timely.

New Adventures are the foremost dance theatre company in the UK, having created an enormous new audience for dance with a series of highly popular productions including Nutcracker!, The Car Man, Edward Scissorhands and the now legendary Swan Lake.

Master of American contemporary dance, Mark Morris has become the benchmark of creativity for a generation of dancers, choreographers and audiences. So, as The Guardian newspaper said “the return to Britain of Mark Morris is a true cause for celebration”.

Music is always at the heart of Morris’ ballets and as his dancers travel in beautiful sweeping pathways across the stage it is almost as if the music comes alive in movement. His constant refusal to take himself too seriously is there in his work, which can switch in mood from the

Passionate and obsessive, Cathy and Heathcliff’s love is as unruly and dangerous as the Yorkshire moors that surround them.

“My love for Heathcliff resembles the eternal rocks beneath – a source of little visible delight, but necessary.”

As children they are inseparable, running wild and free on the moors, but over time their childish affection deepens into an overwhelming love – a devastating force that even death cannot destroy.
