PRESENTED BY THE RESORTS OF DANA POINT GRAND PATRON

Page 4: DANA POINT

In my thirty years of creating exhibitions, representing artists, and collecting art, little can compare with the joy and excite-ment created by this group of artists and presented in such a spectacular venue, Dana Point, California. “California” must be emphasized here as it’s more than a State, it’s a concept, a state-of-mind. It’s an openness and the cradle from which great things grow. And Dana Point is forever the birth-mother for Elephant Parade’s entry into the United States. A special thank-you and gratitude must be bestowed on the City of Dana Point and its welcoming, prideful and hardworking leadership and staff and employees.

The task of curating an exhibition or collec-tion is at once both joyful and disappoint-ing. So much good art and many good people just couldn’t participate in this first Elephant Parade in America. Hopefully there will be future opportunities. But fore-most, acknowledgement must be made that the artists’ participation could not ex-ist if not for the generosity and support of The Resorts of Dana Point. Elephant Pa-rade partnered with the Resorts to create the canvas for the artists. Normally an El-ephant Parade exhibition takes a minimum of a year to prepare, yet through the efforts of the City, the employees and agencies representing the Resorts and the artists themselves, Elephant Parade-Welcome to America was created in a mere seven months. A tribute to everyone’s passion and dedication to excellence and address-ing the emergency. Emergency to save the Asian elephant from extinction.

Everyone contributes. The artists have lent their time and talents to create awareness and support the cause of saving the Asian elephant. Hours and hours; weeks and even months of their careers were commit-ted to creating their unique and individual elephant. Some metaphorical, some literal; some decorative and some disturbing. Yet each elephant an expression to be trea-sured. Each artist was challenged (after all, who gets to paint an elephant??) both staying true to their art yet supporting the cause, after all again, each sculpted, paint-ed created elephant has a cause too, to be purchased and proudly displayed to bring awareness and funds to support the work of The Asian Elephant Foundation.

The range of public opinions is exactly what we seek in an exhibition. It’s a plea-sure of amazement to see the reactions and to hear the comments on individual elephants as well as the entire collection. The collection was formed on three prin-cipals, and balanced basically, 1/3 Asian artists or Asian theme, 1/3 celebrities and artists of a celebrity stature, and 1/3 spe-cific cause or community related. While there is overlap, the quality and integrity of the artwork is of the highest standard con-sistent with the theme of each elephant. They are all excellent and will be sincerely missed when the herd leaves.

While this book is a tribute and thank-you to each artist, special note should be given to a number of elephants. Lily Tomlin’s “Is Any Body Listening”, Li Bing-Bing’s “100 Flowers”, as well as the armor

growing on the elephant by Lori Rodkin show the deep passion for the elephants through metaphor. The support of Khloe Kardashian must be appreciated. The day she started painting “Jasmine,” her social network generated nearly a quarter-mil-lion new followers to the cause. The world recognized art of Olivia DeBerardinis and the animal care fans of Cesar Millan brought millions more.

Leading the way bringing Elephant Pa-rade to America are previous Elephant Parade-Singapore American artist-partic-ipants: Chor Boogie (his Boogie Bird sav-ing the elephants); Sona Mirzaei (Uncle Sam as Liberty); Alexandra Nechita (over ten-thousand hand applied googlie-eyes), and Laura Seeley (creating the connec-tion between land and sea).

Chris Hoy’s elephant reminds us “There’s Still Hope”; Alan Nowell’s “Surpher” re-minds us to protect and enjoy the ocean;

Ashley Keene reminds us Peace is an “Epiphany”. Wyland’s elephant brings awareness through humor. Then there’s “Jack” by Dustin Otterbach: Jack’s jour-ney to save the elephants has just begun. With everyone’s help, Jack will be suc-cessful.

And we must thank Mike Spits and the entire Elephant Parade international or-ganization for allowing us to share in the mission, “Painting a Brighter Future”.

We must save the elephant, so big and magnificent. If not, how can we save the organisms we can barely see that sustain the earth and life. We really are, and must “be part of it”.

Congratulations to all.

Elephant Parade® is the world’s largest open-air art exhibition of decorated elephant statues that seeks to attract public awareness and support for Asian elephant conservation. Created by local and international artists, each elephant is a unique piece of art. After the exhibition, most elephants are auctioned by a renowned auction house. The auction proceeds are donated to The Asian Elephant Foundation®.

MISSIonIt is Elephant Parade’s mission to become the world’s largest support organisation for the Asian elephant, which is threat-ened with extinction. The open air art exhibitions attract worldwide attention, awareness, support for the cause of el-ephant conservation and a smile on mil-lions of faces.

hoW It aLL BeGan …Elephant Parade was founded by father and son Marc and Mike Spits in 2006. In Thailand, Marc met a baby elephant named Mosha, who had lost her leg after stepping on a landmine. Mosha inspired

Marc to found Elephant Parade: “I wanted to do something structural, something that is profitable and sustainable in the long run. Only in that way can we provide the Asian elephant a future”. Before long Marc engaged his son Mike to help bring his idea of Elephant Parade to fruition.

a WorLDWIDe SUCCeSSElephant Parade proved to be hugely suc-cessful. Millions of dollars have been raised at auctions worldwide. To date, many Asian elephants have been saved and cured, but there are still thousands of el-ephants that need our support.

art, BUSIneSS anD ConSerVatIonElephant Parade is the combination of Art, Business and Conservation. Art inspires people and drives the value of the ele-phant sculptures. The higher the quality of the Art, the more money raised at auction. Elephant Parade is a social enterprise. We believe that business can contribute to creating a better environment.

The exhibition elephants are donated to the foundation and in addition, 20% of Elephant Parade profits are distributed to The Asian Elephant Foundation. There-fore, Elephant Parade is a structural and ongoing source of income for the founda-

tion making it possible to give the Asian elephant a fighting chance in the battle for space, dignity and survival. Because with-out funding, necessary support cannot be offered.

Let’S PaInt a BrIGhter FUtUre! We believe in the power of a global movement to make a happier world. Our worldwide open-air art exhibitions create millions of smiles and raise awareness of the need for elephant conservation. We will support the Asian elephant forever.

Be part of it.

The Asian elephant is a most unusual animal. Along with its close relative, the African elephant, the Asian elephant is our planet’s largest land animal. Our two elephant species are the last surviving members of a 35 million year old biological grouping that included nearly 200 species.

Having roamed the tropical forests of Asia for millions of years, elephants have evolved perfectly to fit in and help maintain the health of the ecosystem. With their ac-tions on forests through feeding and roam-ing, dispersing seeds and fertilizing the soil wherever they go, they can be seen as the gardeners of the forest. This connection is

what makes them a keystone species indi-cating the overall health of their environment. Where elephants roam freely, we see richer biodiversity and healthier forests with bet-ter climate stability. Relationships like this demonstrate the inextricable link between the survival of the Asian elephant and the world we live in.

Besides its great size and strange nose, the Asian elephant is also unusual because it is prominent in art and popular culture — think of Babar and Dumbo. The elephant is also an important symbol in two of the world’s major religions, Hinduism and Buddhism. People all over the world love elephants, even in countries that don’t have wild elephants.

Why Do PeoPLe LoVe eLePhantS So MUCh? The answer is probably because they are so intelligent. The elephant brain weighs about three times as much as a human brain. In fact, the elephant has the largest brain of any mammal except for a few spe-cies of whales that weigh ten times more.

When comparing animal intelligence with human intelligence, most scientists place elephants alongside the great apes (chim-panzees, orangutans, etc.) and the whales and dolphins. While the adult elephant brain is very big, the baby elephant’s brain is small and grows over many years, just like human babies.

The elephant’s intelligence means that they have very complex social lives. Moth-ers and other adults actually teach young elephants over many years. Elephants are one of the few animals that make and use tools, including fly swatters, back scratchers and using rocks to destroy electric fences. Elephants have excellent memories and they show sympathy and kindness to not

16 17

Page 11: DANA POINT

just other elephants but even to other kinds of animals, including humans. (In India and Thailand humans have used gentle female Asian elephants to babysit for human chil-dren!) They also know how to do team work to do complex jobs.

Elephants have proved to have a sense of self, which is quite rare in animals. El-ephants mourn the death of friends and family members. So why do we love el-ephants so much? Perhaps because we sense they are so much like us. We real-ize that they have feelings and emotions, a love for family that is much like ours. This makes it all the sadder that our spe-cies has brought so much destruction to their species. Many of their dead relatives are extinct because they were killed by our ancestors. We have destroyed much of their home, their habitat, and hunted them for meat. Even today they are still slaughtered for their teeth, which we call tusks, or, when it is carved, ivory. We have turned them into an endangered species.

the aSIan eLePhant FoUnDatIonThe Asian elephant is threatened with ex-tinction. Their available habitat has shrunk by 95% and its population has declined by at least 90% over the last 100 years to less than 50,000 elephants. The aim of The Asian Elephant Foundation is to raise greater public awareness of this issue and to support projects and organizations that are dedicated to improving the wellbeing and conservation of the Asian elephant. If we don’t take action now, the Asian ele-phant will become extinct in a few decades.

The Asian Elephant Foundation was cre-ated as an independent, non-profit founda-

tion, to distribute funds raised by Elephant Parade. With its board of elephant experts TAEF guarantees optimal distribution of funds to various projects that are solely dedicated to the wellbeing and conserva-tion of the Asian Elephant, and ultimately to saving them from extinction. Projects we support vary from educational ac-tivities, to elephant hospitals, to elephant corridors which help maintain habitat and population contiguity.

The Asian Elephant Foundation aims to reach its goal by focusing on:

• Awareness and Education•Solutions for the human-elephant

conflict•Health and wellbeing of the Asian

elephants

TAEF operates actively from Chiang Mai, Thailand, under responsibility of Carmen Rademaker. Located at Elephant Parade House in Chiang Mai, where visitors can learn everything there is to know about Asian elephants. Here we work on making tourists and tourist organizations aware of the need to support the elephants by informing the public and enabling them to get to know the elephants in a respon-sible manner. Carmen gives lectures for groups, guides tourists to a selection of elephant camps, creates tailor-made trips for tour operators, develops educational materials, and manages the TAEF net-work. This dedicated work enables TAEF to always be up-to-date regarding prob-lems and solutions for Asian elephants, and thus helping the TAEF Board make the best possible choices in selecting ap-plications.

Since October 2013 the Asian Elephant Foundation (TAEF) has joined forces with Think Elephants International (TEI). After several meetings between Josh Plotnik, TEI, Carmen Rademaker, TAEF and Mike Spits, Elephant Parade, Think Elephants proposed to offer their US based NGO infrastructure for auctioning the Welcome to America elephants in Dana Point.

thInK eLePhantS InternatIonaL

Think Elephants International strives to promote elephant conserva-tion through scientific research, education programming, and inter-national collaborations. TEI, a 501(c)3 non-profit foundation based in New York and working in Thailand, is an organization run by scientists and educators in collaboration with conservationists in the field and teachers in the classroom.

TEI works in two specific areas: research and education. Specifically, TEI scientists investigate how elephants think about their natural environment (through stud-ies of behavior and intelligence), and have conducted a number of studies that have garnered international media atten-tion. These have included studies on el-ephants’ ability to recognize themselves in a mirror (they can!), their understanding of partnership and cooperation, and their use of their sense of smell to problem-solve. In Asia, the biggest problem fac-ing elephants is human/elephant conflict; with a decline in available natural habitat, elephants are increasingly coming into contact with people, often with terrible consequences for both. Our research aims to provide the elephant’s perspec-tive in the development of solutions to this conflict. The more we understand about what elephants need and why they be-have the way they do, the better equipped we will be to protect them.

TEI is also working to promote elephant conservation through education. In both U.S. and Thai schools, TEI has created comprehensive curricula aimed at teach-ing young people about conservation and involving them directly in elephant behav-ior research. At the completion of a pilot program in a New York City public school, more than a dozen middle schoolers co-authored an international publication with scientists from around the world. In Thailand, TEI is working to expand a pilot program in Bangkok nationwide in 2014. By teaching the next generation of gov-ernment officials, conservationists and consumers about the importance of el-ephants, TEI hopes to change the future for elephants, before it’s too late.

Page 13: DANA POINT

The Asian Elephant Foundation supports various projects throughout Asia, varying from elephant hospitals to elephant cor-ridors which help maintain habitat and population contiguity. One of the benefi-ciaries of the Foundation is the elephant hospital Friends of the Asian Elephant (FAE) in Lampang, Thailand. Soraida Sal-wala started the hospital, the first of its kind, in 1993. The hospital takes care of elephants that have been injured by step-ping on landmines, in traffic, that are sick or have been abused by humans. To date over 2,300 elephants have been saved and cured at FAE. “Without Elephant Pa-rade, I don’t think our elephants would survive”, says Soraida. The Asian Elephant Foundation cares for more than injured el-ephants alone. Preventing elephants from getting hurt is equally important. This is why they support organisations that se-cure elephant corridors, promote animal friendly ecotourism and protect and pro-create a natural habitat for the elephants. All these organisations work closely to-gether with Asian partners that have local knowledge and cultural understanding in order to ensure their long-term success. One of the boardmembers of The Asian Elephant Foundation is Bjarne Clausen, internationally renowned expert in the field of elephant conservation. These are a few quotes from an interview with Bjarne Clausen about his passion for the Asian elephant:

What’S yoUr PaSSIon For the aSIan eLePhant?

“I feel very strongly towards all creatures, that due to human activity are threatened beyond dignity. The various species

should have the right to share the planet with humans, and as humans it is our duty to ensure this right. We have to keep our planet balanced, secure its richness.”

teLL US aBoUt yoUr WorKInG eX-PerIenCe WIth thIS enDanGereD SPeCIeS? What haS It Been LIKe?

“To be frank, working with endangered species is often quite depressing. All over the world, biodiversity as well as numbers are decreasing due to human activity. As conservationists, we learn to be happy about our small victories and learn to continue our work even when we experience big defeats. What’s so fascinating about working with elephants is that it is a species that is so big in size that it cannot be controlled by force, but only by cooperation between man and elephant.”

What Do yoU thInK IS the BIGGeSt threat to the aSIan eLePhant?

“The biggest threat for elephants in the wild is the human pressure on their habi-tat, and the fragmentation of elephant populations that is caused by this pres-sure.”

What Do yoU thInK IS the BeSt SoLUtIon to thIS ProBLeM?

“The single most important thing is land: land where the Asian elephant can live in peace. Each elephant needs a few square miles of living space: in other words, the space that is needed has to be of consid-erable size. Also, the people that live on the borders of these pieces of land have to accept and respect the rights of the el-ephants living there.”

The children of today are the tourists and the policy makers of tomorrow. Their young minds are still very open to learning and changing their behavior for the better, which is why The Asian Elephant Foundation very strongly believes in making children of all ages, all over the world aware of the situation of the Asian elephant.

A large part of the value of our program is that the elephant can be used as a di-rect link showing the kids in a playful, yet powerful way what impact human devel-opment has on the elephants’ habitat, and what role they can play in helping prevent problems like deforestation, or learning new behaviors like “using less and recy-cling more.” The children’s education program was started in Hasselt, Belgium in Septem-ber 2012, with over 1,000 children par-ticipating. This year, just before the 2013 summer holiday, we also ran the curricu-lum with over 2,000 children in Orange County, California. Additionally, we will run programs again in 11 UK cities dur-ing the second half of 2013 into the first half of 2014. Parallel programs will also be run in The Netherlands and in Germany in the second half of 2013 as we spread the critical message about the plight of the Asian elephant and people’s role in protecting them.

The Asian Elephant Foundation had ex-perts develop a range of tutorial materials for the children’s program: an exercise book for the children and explanation for the teachers, wall posters with the most important facts & figures, threats and

what to do about it (and many fantas-tic photos!), coloring sheets so kids can make their own designs to decorate the blank Elephant Parade figurines, the blank elephants themselves, a digital “Facts & Figures” quiz; and an “Elephants Sounds” quiz with a Certificate of Completion.

Both children and teachers are often very impressed and enthusiastic about the program. Some quotes:

“Just wanted to drop you a note – my kids are LOVING this. So engaging! I even had a girl go home, do extra research, and write a report on the injured elephant Mo-sha. :-) Yay!’ (Katrine, teacher in Capistra-no Unified School District, California)

“I just received a phone call from a teacher at Bathgate Elementary School who want-ed to let me know how she spent the en-tire day on the Asian elephant subject and materials and how the students LOVED it and really got into the information. She by-passed the school system and was able to get 120 minutes on the Internet so the kids were able to watch videos and numerous clips. Ms. Horton wanted to know if they could do these studies again next year.’ (Judy Bullockus, coordinating the school program in Orange County for TAEF)

3 Chockra-BroChor Boogie

The elephant is seen as a deity in Asian cultures. The design highlights the energy flow through

this being as it attempts to unify its soul with the boogie birds acting as chakras. Through

color and composition elements, Shockraphant is asking mankind to find that inner unity.

As an artist of modern times, understanding himself and the world through color, defining

the meaning of originality Chor Boogie is one of many masters that leads this pioneering

craft of spray paint in its diverse art form. A deep spiritual healing and recovery from addic-

tion nearly a decade ago transformed his life and has had a major impact in his style of color

therapy and techniques of creative innovativeness. Chor Boogie moved to San Francisco

in 2007 and took the leap to pursue a full time career in art. His visionary works ignites the

hearts and minds of the masses world wide. There is no color he does not use. He cre-

ates a wide range of forms pioneering his inverted can technique which slows down the

pressure of the paint and creates dense, rich tones giving room for more detail on a broad

perspective. Chor Boogie’s dynamic range of artistic styles can manifest as soulful, deftly

shaded portraits to color therapy, geometric elements adding up to half hidden faces, and

a minds eye or two to encourage you to see internally and externally.

The elephant is taking the lead role in the fight to turn around the species named on the endangered list. Who better to do so than not only the largest mammal, but one of the smartest and emotional of them all! It would be a great injustice for our children, and our children’s children to never know the elephant. Luckily, there’s still hope to preserve their existence. My design represents elephants’ unique emotions and personalities, along with other endangered animals who need their voices heard, including the orangutan, mountain gorilla, polar bear, tiger, snow leopard, panda, California condor, and bald eagle. It’s our job to make sure these animals are around for future generations to come.

15 My design represents the paradox between desire and greed - more specifically, our desire to pos-

sess everything and anything, no matter how destruc-tive. Inside the belly of the elephant, evil forces hunt these pure, majestic creatures amidst a tiny magical world. The frantic boat race through volatile waters is a desperate attempt to save the elephant and return it to the safety of home. The image of the princess is a sym-bol of the truly dark side of greed - an emblem of excess, consumerism, entitlement and an attempt to attain per-fection. In addition, the princess and the various images

of idealized female beauty mirror Homer’s epic poem, The Odyssey. Through a series of life-threatening ad-ventures, Odysseus yearns to return home to his wife Penelope. Her image and memory haunt the moonlit waves and line the walls of the caves. I have entitled the piece Odysseus to explore this conflict and suggest a similar end in which the hero returns home to safety and reclaims his kingdom. So too would the elephant return and reign supreme once again.

PunkaphantAndre Miripolsky

I took a monochromatic approach to my elephant sing calking material pressed from a tube to make a repetitive pattern of 3-D ‘candy kisses’ like application.

Twenty-seven tubes of calking material were used to totally cover the elephant. The effort created another outline to the predefined, smooth line of the sculpture, giving it a spikey, hair-like look that harkened back to the pink music days of the 1980s - hence its name, its Punkaphant.

Miripolsky was born in Paris, France, to a father who was Cultural Advisor for the American Foreign Service and also an artist. The family lived in a series of exotic landscapes including Iran, Thailand, Austria, France, Indonesia and Korea. Miripolsky was immersed in and surrounded by art since his youth. By age eight he was working with oils and by age ten he sold his first painting to the American Ambassador to Indonesia. After graduating High School in Seoul, Korea, he headed to the California Institute of the Arts. He left after two years to pursue a classical acting career before finally centering his creative axis around the canvas and all things visual. Andre Miripolsky’s keen understanding of pop imagery and energy launched a dynamic career that resulted in work with Elton John (the famous 1980 Concert in Central Park

“Piano Keys” costume) and Bette Midler (album package/visual design for her 1982 worldwide “DeTour”), as well as Quincy Jones, The Rolling Stones, Gato Barbieri, Robin Williams, Beastie Boys, Cheap Trick, MTV, and “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno. For thirty years, he has continued to explore and discover creative wonders in his Kingdom of Color. Miripolsky serves on the boards of the L.A. Art Alliance, the Downtown Artwalk, and the Hollywood Arts Council.

Cesar Millan

The inspiration for the art on my elephant was to mirror that of a dog’s personality: joyful, happy, bold (at times)

and simple. My first encounter with an elephant was as a young boy at the circus. The colors represent my idea of the embellishments

that dressed the elephant and excitement and joy that I never forgot and connected me to them.

“I was born in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico, and grew up working with animals on my grandfather’s farm. Because of my natural way with dogs,

they would follow me everywhere. Other kids would bully me and call me el perrero — “dog boy.”

I crossed the border into the US at 21, eventually getting a job as a dog groomer and walker. After the LA Times ran a profile of me, the guy walking thirty or forty dogs off leash, a number of production companies approached me to develop a TV show. This eventually became “Dog Whisperer with Cesar Millan.”

CornCorn, one of the oldest crops in the world, has been around

for thousands of years, just like the elephant.

They may take our tusks but they can’t take our husks!

CoconutA tropical coconut is tough on the outside, but the

benefit is within the skin. The elephant looks tough on

the outside but is actually very sensitive, both on the

shin and within. Both allowed to grow wild or nurtured

carefully will thrive and benefit mankind many ways.

Nat Posilla was born in Nong Khai, one of the small

villages based along the Mekhong River in North-

eastern Thailand. With an aptitude for art, Nat’s

first artistic experiences came with the chance

to painting and repairing temple murals. Nat

went on to find work with galleries in Samui,

Phuket and Bangkok where he specialized in

commissioned portraits and reproductions of

the “master artists” in oils. This technical ex-

perience and his own inner drive to create and

reflect beauty became the core of an unconven-

tional art education. This unusual background

has produced a highly skilled, prolific, refreshingly

confident and affirmative artist. Nat’s paintings

have been described as simultaneously tradition-

al and modern. His monumental canvases have

a dual effect on the viewer, one feels at once

excited by their vigour and eased by their har-

monious calm. Nat works from his garden stu-

dio in Chiang Mai Thailand where the natural

light lends a rich intensity of colour and tone

to his hyper realistic contemporary natural

paintings. Nat’s studies have an explosive and

unique quality of composition and colour, each

painting positively glows with its own energy.

This elephant is a symbol of wisdom and enlightenment. If more of society where able to look at nature with awe and appreciation, it would be far easier to prevent animals such as the Asian elephant, from being on the brink of extinction.

Ashley Keene, aka Shlee, is an artist and designer from Dana Point, California and the winner of the Parade to the Point design contest exclusive to local creators. Growing up near the beach, her artwork has

strongly been influenced by the local surf culture and ocean vistas. In fact, most of Shlee’s

personal favorite work is unbound by the traditional canvas, as she prefers to paint

on surfboards, skateboards, and vi-nyl records. Inspired by nature’s

curves and beauty, Shlee often depicts her favorite animals

and landscapes, adding her own surreal element. She

currently works as an in house artist at Story Art Collective in Laguna Beach.”

26 “The Mellowphant” is inspired by the character Jeff Bridges played in the Coen Brothers’ film The Big Lebowski. While it flopped upon

release in 1998, the film has since gone on to inspire festivals all around the world, a shelf of philosophical books (including a few of our own and one by Bridges himself), hundreds of graduate theses, innumerable vis-ual artworks, and of course, a religion. So why is The Big Lebowski now considered “the most popular cult film of all time”? Probably because its philosophy is so accessible and welcome. It encourages viewers to relax, take it easy, and remember what’s important in life. In his own unlikely way, “The Dude” provides an example for us all to emulate and admire. Moreover, we believe that the way of the Dude is a perennial philosophy that has always existed to counter the excesses of civilization.

Yet just as the rapid growth of civilization has been hard on humans, it has been even more crippling to The Asian Elephant Foundation. From first hand research done while reporting on elephants in Thailand, I’ve found that they are among the most “dude” of all the members of the animal kingdom: That is to say that they are social, loyal, friendly, play-ful and easygoing.Tragically, powerful human interests are harshing their mellow by encroaching on their habitat, killing them for their body parts and enslaving them in inhumane tourist circuses. This aggression will not stand, man! We pray that Elephant Parade and other organizations can help preserve this icon of animal amiableness before it’s too late.

Mosha, as a baby el-ephant, stepped on a landmine and lost her low-er right leg. In need of urgent intensive care, she was rushed to the Friends of the Asian Elephant Hospital in Thailand. While visiting the hospital, Marc Spits met baby Mosha and was inspired to create Elephant Parade. At the hospital, doctors healed Mosha so that she could walk with a prosthetic leg. Today, Elephant Parade continues to support Friends of the Asian Elephant in Thailand so that Asian Elephants like Mosha can have a bright future. In her honor, a special Mosha elephant is created for each El-ephant Parade exhibiltion held around the world.

This amazing artwork is created with sustainable and natural materials that were previously used for other purposes, reclaiming them and giving them life. The elephant is ready to fly from harm or fight back with ammo at the ready. The elephant needs sustainability and balance. A native of Southern California, OTTERBACH’s mission is to celebrate every day through honoring the artistic and entrepreneurial spirit of his family, finding and generating beauty, demonstrating respect for the environment, inspiring other artists by example, and supporting charitable causes through international and cross-cultural collaborations. The fifth of six children, he credits his parents’ own work ethics, creativity, and stable upbringing with providing him the sense of freedom to express himself. As an artist and sculptor, Otterbach uses reclaimed materials in his works of art in order to inspire sustainable and responsible practices. Otterbach embraces his affinity for painting on reclaimed metal by allowing the weathered patinas and textures of the metal to guide his color stories and intricate tonalities. OTTERBACH cuffs are wearable versions of his signature works on metal. Otterbach has owned and operated two successful art galleries in Laguna Beach, California: Zion and OTTERBACH Contemporary Art. He currently works out of his studio in Venice, California.

Black TajMira Gulati

The festival elephant is adored and honored. A spiritual being causing people to reflect in

amazement that the earth is shared by mankind and other amazing creatures. India’s Taj

Mahal was built by thousands of artisans in expression of unlimited beauty and love. So it

should be with the elephants, thousands of peoples working together to save this spiritual

creature.

Mirari’s founder and lead designer, Mira Gulati, trained in the US as a gemologist and

jewellery designer has created the Mirari brand to satisfy India’s growing demand for

luxury jewellery with a contemporary edge, as well as the international market’s craving

for aesthetic, incredible Indian treasures. As a result of this uncompromising commitment

to quality, Mirari has won itself a privileged base of admirers with a thirst for exceptionally

beautiful and precious contemporary jewels. It now has a reputation for creating exquisitely

rare pieces with an international aesthetic – an aesthetic that also embraces thousands of

years of India’s design heritage, including extravagant concepts from the Raj and Mogul

eras. Mira Gulati’s international experience and exposure, as well as her deep appreciation

for the rich design heritage of her native India, have given her pioneer status in the exciting

design revolution we are currently witnessing – a revolution that sees Indian jewellery come

of age and east and west seek inspiration, each from the other.

LET’S PAINT A BRIGHTER FUTURE!

We believe in the power of a global movement to make

a happier world. Our worldwide open-air art exhibitions

create millions of smiles and raise awareness of the need

for elephant conservation. We will support the Asian el-
