The SmartDock Pilot unit provides a practical combination of weight and functionality. Its form factor allows it to be carried on board in a rugged and waterproof carry case or small enough to be packed in a carry bag, whichever best suits the marine operation. An optional AIS receiver completely integrated within the unit can overcome the shortcomings of connecting to a vessel’s AIS Pilot’s Plug allowing viewing of AIS vessel data fully integrated into the system. The telemetry system provides communications with a shore base station for the reception of GPS correction data. Optionally, local environmental and metocean data from a shore based Trelleborg Marine Monitoring System can be received for display and use by the vessel’s pilot during the approach and docking phase or by the vessel’s master when alongside. Integration can be provided with the mooring line tension system at the terminal as well as vessel approach speed, distance, angle and once alongside, drift as measured by a shore based laser docking system. The outdoor PPU unit communicates to the pilots laptop or tablet computer via an inbuilt WiFi transceiver to allow the pilot to move about the bridge during the operation. SmartDock Pilot uses an integrated intelligent battery and charging system and can be powered from an external supply. Software provided with the SmartDock Pilot allows for accurate visualization of the vessel’s navigated route with real-time positioning updates displayed on the electronic chart. Vessel position prediction and distance measured to charted objects are provided independent of the vessel’s own ECDIS system that allows the pilot a familiar and consistent system to augment decisions for the approach, manoeuvring and docking processes. A local instrument display within the software allows the operator a clear view of the vessels, position, speed, rate of turn, actual and predicted course along with the ability to resolve distances to charted objects and warn of navigation hazards. GPS based approach and docking systems serve a specific role in mooring of large vessels. Using both GPS & Glonass reliable and accurate position is readily achievable.

System ConfigurationsSmartDock Pilot is available in two levels both of which utilise GPS and GLONASS to provide the most reliable positioning in times of marginal GPS conditions.

The ”G” general specification system provides positions accurate to 20cm using L1 GPS and GLONASS while the ”X” extended performance system provides position accuracy to 1cm by utilising GLONASS as well as GPS L1 and L2 with Real Time Kinematics (RTK). SmartDock Pilot’s GPS receivers are future proof being upgradeable to make use of Europe’s Galileo and the GPS L5 frequencies when they become commercially available (at additional cost). Both systems require the SmartDock Pilot shore base station to provide position correction data and additional shore based systems data.

Pilot’s DisplaySmartDock Pilot software is hosted on a Windows based tablet or laptop computer which connects to the outdoor PPU unit via WiFi.

Position, heading, rate of turn and AIS, data as measured and received by the PPU is available at the computer in real-time and presented in a dedicated software application. Additional mooring, drift and MetOcean data from optional shore based systems may also be presented on the computer.

Recommended form factorRuggedised waterproof carry case containing PPU and computer is recommended.

This allows SmartDock Pilot to be transfered safely to the vessel under all conditions.

SoftwareSmartDock Pilot Software Screen showing a vessel during a turn within an approach channel.

The intended course and vessel predicted path is clearly indicated along with a virtual instrument view.

Tablet PC form factorThis provides either traditional laptop mode or touchscreen tablet mode.

The computer is suitable for outdoor use in all weather with a sunlight readable display.
