    Appearances by Drivers:

Opening day is a special day. The smack of a baseball

popping into a catchers mitt. The anticipation that this

season is the one. We asked some of the Rangers about

    their best opening-day memories.

    OPENING NUMBER

    BRANDON McCARTHYSTARTING PITCHER

Last year [as a member of the

White Sox] will probably be thebest for a long time. It was theonly opening-day roster I made. Then I ended up throwing fiveinnings of relief after a rain delayto get the win. I got the first win ofthe season last year.

    KEVIN MILLWOODSTARTING PITCHER

The best would be my firstopening-day start in Philadelphia[2003], where I beat the Marlins. But my worst would be last years, against Boston. [Millwood barelymade it through five innings in a7-3 loss.]

    GERALD LAIRDCATCHER

This year would be my bestbecause Im starting and openingup in my hometown in Anaheim.

Thats going to be a great moment.I grew up five minutes from thestadium and now Im opening-daycatcher, starting for the Rangersagainst my hometown team.

    BRAD WILKERSONOUTFIELDER

My best memory would be my firstopening day [playing for Montreal],

when I was in the starting lineup and out in front of the fans. To beintroduced as a starter for a bigleague club, that was my mostmemorable opening day.

    IAN KINSLERSECOND BASEMAN

I was facing Curt Schilling, opening

day, my rookie year [last season].It was a pretty special one. I hadfamily and friends there and endedup getting a hit my first at bat. Itwas definitely a good opening dayfor me. Ill remember that forever.

    MARK TEIXEIRAFIRST BASEMAN

Best opening days were 04 and

    05. I hit home runs on openingday. Talk about starting yourseason right. Its always nice to hita home run on opening day andget yourself going for the season.Every opening day has been goodto me. TODAYS GAME

S AN FRANCISCO Barry Bonds has be-gun a season that

should be his most scruti-nized and most thrilling, pining to break the mosthallowed record in Ameri-can sports while daring thefederal government to comeget him.

The sluggers chase ofHank Aarons 755 home

runs comes amid lingeringspeculation that Bonds tooksteroids and failed an am-phetamines test last season.

Will he stay healthyenough to hit the 21 homeruns he needs? Bonds

would love to do it this sea-son, when even more atten-tion is on the team with San

Francisco hosting the All-Star game in July just be-

fore Bonds turns 43.The Giants re-signed the

seven-time NL MVP for thisseason at $15.8 million, butBonds isnt taking anythingfor granted.

Theres always just a lit-tle window of opportunityin baseball, he said. That

    window can close real fast.

    Sports are like that.Associated Press

TRIBE CAN HIT EMIn a Central Division loadedwith good pitching, theIndians strength is theirbashing lineup. Can DH TravisHafner, center fielder GradySizemore, catcher VictorMartinez and new secondbaseman Josh Barfield makeup for a pitching deficiency relative to the rest of thedivision?

THINK, OZZIE, THINKWhen White Sox won it all in2005, manager Ozzie Guillen(below) was a master ofholding together aroster of disparatepersonalities. Now it appearsthe only thingstandingbetween the Soxand contention isan increasingly tense

and defensive Guillen. He gothis players to makeadjustments in 2005; can hemake one now?

SAY IT: RE-PEATCan the Tigers repeat as ALchamps? The overwhelminganswer seems to be yes.Even with starting pitcherKenny Rogers out until July, they seem to have enoughpitching. And they added the

necessary big bat theyneeded from Gary Sheffield.

TWIN BASHINGCan DH Jason Kubel establishhimself as the Twins nextrising hitting star, joiningcatcher Joe Mauer and firstbaseman Justin Morneau? They may need moreslugging since the rotation isgoing to be peppered withunproven pitchers such as

    Boof Bonser and Matt Garza.DMN

A BRAVE QUESTCan Braves manager BobbyCox open his eyes in theninth inning? The Bravesranked last in NL savepercentage (.567) last seasonand made bullpenimprovement an off-seasonpriority. They re-signed BobWickman and traded for MikeWilliams and Rafael Soriano.

    SEARCH FOR ARMS

Has anybody seen BobGibson lately? The Cardinalsare counting on Kip Wells astheir No. 2 starter and a pairof converted relievers (AdamWainwright and BradenLooper) to round out therotation until Mark Mulderreturns (midseason at theearliest). The Cards rotationhad a 4.79 ERA last year; canthey go for 5.00 in 2007?

SEARCH FOR ARMS IIWhere is Pedro? WithoutPedro Martinez (below), theMets ran short of startingpitching in the NLCS and areshorter now. Until he returns(midseason at the earliest),

the rotation couldinclude a pair of

    40-somethingsand threeguys whocombined for

11 wins lastseason (JohnMaine, Oliver Perez

    and Mike Pelfrey).

YIKES, THATS OLDDoes it get better with age?By June 1, five Giantsregulars will be 35 or older(Rich Aurilia, Ray Durham,Dave Roberts, Omar Vizqueland Barry Bonds); that is, ifthey stay off the disabled

SURPRISE, Ariz. From where does this wholenotion spring that Ron

Washington is going to be aplayers manager, as he

boldly stated not 30 min-utes into his introduction asthe Rangers manager?

Washingtons style wasformed wholly from his in-teraction with others.

As a player in the KansasCity Royals Baseball Acade-my, he was grounded in theexecution of fundamentals.

As a big leaguer for parts of12 seasons, he was touched

by teammates as diverse asthe studious Randy Bush, now a Chicago Cubs assis-tant general manager, to thelate Kirby Puckett, whoplayed with exuberancerarely seen.

He played for managerswho stuck by their starting

lineups without hesitationand for others who believedthe key to getting every-thing out of a team was toget everybody involved.

Strategically, he favorspressuring teams withsteals and bunts and speed. But he has also seen the

benefits of Oaklands ap-proach (his last stop): selec-

tive at the plate and conser-vative on the base paths.

There have just been somany people who have saidstuff and done stuff thatsticks with you, Washing-ton said. People whopraised you, who were di-rect with you but never in amean way. People whotreated you like a profes-sional. People who told you

what you had to get better

    and pushed you.DMN

    SURPRISE, Ariz. The

hop is back. And were not talking bunny hops. These are thein-love-with-life hops that

were Sammy Sosas trade-mark when he was the toastof Chicago.

Sosas super-sized bodyand strength were essentialfor three consecutive 60-home run seasons with theCubs, but the driving force

was the unconditional lovethe team and its fans show-ered on him.

Thats why the reversalof opinion after the corked-

bat incident in 2003 was asdevastating to his career asany of the nagging injuriesthat followed.

    He has been a changed

    man this spring with the

Rangers, and the major rea-son is that he is playing formen who believe in him.

Sosa had a solid spring, batting .408 with five homeruns and 15 RBIs.

Rangers manager Ron Washington and hittingcoach Rudy Jaramillo areunconditionally in Sosascorner.

I hear scouts saying thisand that. They dont know. They dont know what is go-ing on with his work ethic,Jaramillo said. I know

what Sammy Sosa can do,and thats all I care about. ...Hes getting his confidence

    back. Thats the mainthing.
