Hi! My name is Mister Gucci Bijou. I’m the newest, and (I think) the cutest member of the

Daktari family. Mummy Michele really loves me, and all the volunteers love to play with me. I love to play with Rubber Ducky, and my little Panda Bear. I also love to be extra cute and

distract the girls in the office from working, it’s soo much fun!

I was a little scared of Bullet at

first, but now I know that he’s old

and slow!

I love Rubber Ducky and Panda

Bear :o)

How can anyone work while I’m

being soo cute?!

Me with Mummy and

my big brother Bouba

FREE!! Long Term Volunteer PlacesWould you like to get hands-on experience with injured and orphaned wild animals whilst

educating local underprivileged children, perhaps giving both of them a brighter future? With one of Daktari’s three long term volunteer opportunities, that’s exactly what you can do!

For other opportunities in our area see: http://www.slideshare.net/daktaribushchool/ebroschure

smoothly, making sure the volunteers, staff, animals and children are where they are

meant to be and that everyone is happy!

Your main task is to be in charge of the marketing,

communication, social media, network and assist the

director with the administrative work. This position includes writing

newsletters, order supplies, reception of food deliveries,

coordinate needs of the camp, and taking care of orphaned

animals if necessary.

3. Office Volunteer Fundraising/Outreach Programme

sponsors, review & adapt our funding proposal and get new

ideas to generate income. The other 50% of your time will

be assisting our Outreach Manager. This includes visits to

the wildlife clubs, creating lessons and any administrative assistance

that may be needed.

Eco Club Update from Risette

During the week of school holidays, we had 8 children from Ramatau staying at Daktari. They had such a great time! On the Wednesday we also had a new Eco Club visiting us. This Eco Club is led by Willington (yes, the one who volunteered

here for 3 months) and Donald. We did an Animal Knowledge lesson in the morning while the other Ramatau children were visiting Makalali Game Reserve.

This was followed by a soccer game in the afternoon, Ramatau against Rakgolokwana! They were all enthusiastic, and had sooooo much fun!!

Page 6: Daktari Newsletter March-April 2012

Eco Club Update from RisetteWe also have another project, sponsored by ABSA Bank, where we guide 10 high school learners and 10 post matric students for a year. We give them extra training and help them to make a better future for themselves. They will come to Daktari twice, for a week, to help the volunteers and teach the younger learners. They’ll also get extra lessons about the environment, climate change, biodiversity etc.

In their second week at Daktari we train them how to present themselves, how to write a CV and a letter of motivation and how to be polite in different situations. We create email accounts for them, go over it step by step. Hopefully we can even create a link between them and lodges, organisations and businesses around!

Eco Club Update from RisetteAs a part of the Eco Club children’s training, we took them to Khamai Reptile Park.

They received information about the different reptiles in and around their area and what to do if they come across one of them.

The students learned a lot and they even got the opportunity to touch and hold a snake, a chameleon and a huge spider!

Most of them were very brave and fought their fear while some others had a bit of trouble….

Page 8: Daktari Newsletter March-April 2012

Eco Club Update from RisetteThe students who went to Khamai Reptile Park had to give a presentation during the following meeting to the students who didn’t go to the snake park. They did such a

great job. They came very prepared and the other students were very attentive. They were asking and discussing amongst each other about the best thing to do when coming across a snake! The ABSA sponsored students were giving a lot of information back to their community and many local people learned from it!

After their presentation I gave each member some sheets with information and what to do if you get bitten. Then I asked each of them to write down what they learned

from this lesson; some of the comments were brilliant! This is from Rebecca:

Until next time…….Risette :o)

He comes for 3 months of the year to help us fix EVERYTHING. He is our Land Rover repair man, friend to the children, and an

inspiration to our volunteers.

We love you Roland, make sure you come back again next year!

we used to do with the piggies….. What a mess!!!!!

Roland’ll Fix-itRoland and Mmakoma have

been hard at work fixing things at Daktari, including the

extension, hopefully soon we’ll be able to move around without

bumping into each other!

New Office Volunteer!JP came from GVI to volunteer with us for 3 months. We have

now convinced him to stay for a year as the new Office

Volunteer/Outreach Assistant! Welcome aboard JP!!

A Little Extra Help! At the end of May we had a

few extra helping hands at Daktari. Emmi from Finland

came to stay with us for 3 days. She was staying with Barry & Kirsten,

who are long standing friends and supporters of Daktari.

Top O’ The Mornin’ To Ye…Ex-volunteers Beth & Deidre

from Ireland sent us a box full of Irish goodies so that we could celebrate St Patrick’s Day Irish-style! Even Eeyore got in on the

fun!

We also had my friends Sean & Lee-Anne from

Swaziland, and Lee-Anne’s daughter Jade.

Jade was soo helpful that Risette made her an honorary volunteer!

Last but not least, we had 10 Eco-Club kids come and help us fix up camp during school holidays, they spent almost a whole day with the

volunteers moving a HUGE compost heap!
