VALE-SHIRLEY TYERS
We were saddened to hear of the passing of Shirley Tyers in December 2017.
Our condolences to Ian and the Tyers family. Shirley from the Mount Avon and
Lee Avon Studs was a long time breeder of some lovely animals, especially her
Saanens. She was also a Dairy Goat Judge and had an association with the Dairy
Goat Society for many years.
We look forward to an article from Ian Tyers about Shirley and her association
with Showing, Breeding and Judging goats.

VICTORIAN BRANCH SHOW – Sunday 12th November, 2017 Judge’s comments – In the udder classes, 1st in both of these went to Saanens. These does both had very good shape, capacity, attachment and beautiful tan skin. The overall winner was the doe on her 2nd or more lactation due to her having greater capacity than the doe on her 1st lactation. She went on to be Champion Saanen milking doe, and then took out the award for Best Exhibit. The reserve Champion goating was a well grown and impressive doe that should develop into a fine milker when mated. The Toggenburgs were very well represented on the day. They were of good confirmation. Though a little smaller then I am used to seeing they certainly had style, correctness and neat udders. The kids had good depth and width front & back. There were two little one month old doe kids that won my heart due to their cuteness, even though not placed as the older kids took those awards. The British Alpines on show were stylish and a true representation of their breed. The doe in milk was awarded Reserve Champion Milking doe. Champion Doe Kid was a very elegant and eye catching British Alpine. She blended beautifully, had style, presence and was stunning. If I had British Alpines, she would be on my kidnap list! The Anglo Nubians were very small in numbers, having only two to judge. The breeder is to be commended as their breeding programme is on track due to the kid being better than her dam. This doe kid was my choice for Reserve Champion Doe Kid due to her confirmation, blending, deep body and overall type. All the Nigerian Dwarf goats exhibited on the day where of excellent confirmation. Having only seen them in photos did not prepare me for this very exciting new breed. I can see why they are becoming very popular. The first lactation milker was second in the udder class. The capacity and correctness for a small goat was amazing. She also won Type & 24 Hour production. Junior Champion Doe was a very classy and stylish goatling with a good topline, a wide chest and rear width. The Champion Buck & Reserve Champion Buck where also Nigerian Dwarf with these traits also. On the day I met Jack Robinson, a nice young man who had passed his judging school exams and had commenced his cadetting to become a fully fledged judge. Unofficially I invited him to join me in the ring for classes he was not entered in. He impressed me with his keen eye and did a very good job when asked for his opinions and placings. I am certain he will prove to be a competent judge when qualified. It is pleasing to see young keen people taking an interest; after all they are our future. Thank you to the stewards, in particular Peter Keays, who did a good job of keeping the classes flowing which contributed to the smooth running of the show. I thank the Victorian Branch committee for inviting me to judge. It was a most enjoyable day and it was pleasing to be able to catch up with old friends and hopefully I made new ones.

NOTICE TO EXHIBITORS If you attend a show that is Judged by a judge who is not a member of the DGSA or a State
Judges Panel or does not have a Current Working With Childrens check under Federal
Regulations you are unable to claim Australian Champion Points.
Fire safety on the farm Fire management planning for farmers, landowners, plantation managers and bush block owners.
Key advice for farmers
• Fire is an all year round risk management activity.
• Farmers have legislative responsibilities during the Fire Danger Period.
• Effective preparation and response means better recovery and return to business.
• Limit or cease farm machinery activity on Severe, Extreme or Code Red days.
• Farmers need to consider the needs of family, staff and contractors on their farm.
Essential steps before the fire season Vehicles, equipment and hay
• Double check that spark arrestors on machinery are working and efficient. Make sure chainsaws are free from faults.
• Have water fire extinguishers or knapsack spray pumps (minimum 9 litres) available that can be carried by any person using farm
equipment or machinery.
• Have a safety strategy in place for storing and monitoring hay - purchase a moisture metre if necessary.
• Make sure hay is fully cured before bailing.
• If you have private firefighting equipment, conduct a 'refresher' session with family and employees to make sure everyone can use
it.
• Make sure that there are no gaps between the cladding and the ground or slab of your sheds to prevent embers getting inside.
Fuel loads and stock
• Reduce fuel loads around assets (house blocks, sheds and fences) and create strategic fuel breaks.
• Apply to the relevant authority if you need to remove native vegetation or manage fuel on roadsides.
• Create a heavily grazed area where stock can be moved during a bushfire situation.
• Conduct a stocktake of feed, animals and fencing before the fire season and keep a copy of records off your property.
Permits and laws
• Make a list of legal restrictions (Fire Danger Period and Total Fire Ban) relevant to your property. Display it or keep it handy so
everyone on your property can refer to it often and easily.
• Check with your council if local laws are in place for lighting fires, burning off or using incinerators.
18
• Apply for a Schedule 13 permit from your local council if you intend to burn off weeds, stubble or vegetation during the FDP, or a
schedule 14 permit if you intend to use fire for other purposes (e.g. machinery).
Access for firefighters
• Make sure your property name or number is clearly visible so emergency services can identify it easily when approaching the
entrance.
• Check access tracks around your property. Consider if access for fire trucks can be improved by clearing vegetation, signposting
dead ends or creating turning circles.
• Make sure water supplies around your property are clearly marked in case emergency services need to access them.
Planning
• Have a plan for horses and livestock. A large well-grazed area where they can move freely, with a supply of water, is the
safest. Remove all gear from horses and always keep them contained on your property, they are at serious risk on roads where
visibility will be poor.
• Have a routine in place for fire risk days (moving stock and limiting or postponing machinery use, switching off electric fences).
Make sure everyone on your property is aware of it.
• Fire Danger Ratings are a good way to decide when to leave. They are not a weather forecast – they tell you how dangerous a fire
would be if one started. As the ratings increase, so does the risk of a fast moving and uncontrollable fire.
• If you plan to stay and defend a building during a bushfire, take steps to establish a water supply of at least 10,000 litres
(independent of the mains supply)

PREVENTION OF COCCIDIOSIS -MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY
Coccidiosis is caused by a group of single cell protozoa species that are found in the environment. Some of these are non-infective, some moderately infective, and others are highly infective. Coccidia strains are species specific with some limited crossover between sheep and goats. Coccidia are always present in the herd or flock and most adult animals carry coccidian but are immune to the clinical disease. This immunity occurs more in sheep than in goats and is developed by lambs and kids about four weeks after exposure.
The life cycle of coccidia is quite complicated, has many stages of development and is 21 days in length. There is a gap between diarrhea symptoms and egg excretion so fecal egg counts are not always a good indicator of infection. Shedding of eggs only occurs at the end of the infection period after the damage has been done to the intestinal tract of the animal. Producers should not have to treat for coccidiosis if a prevention program is followed. Treating symptomatic animals is a poor approach and labor intensive because if you see clinical cases, there has already been subclinical losses and damage.
Cleanliness is the first course of action to take in the prevention of coccidiosis as oocytes are spread in feces. A clean barn is essential especially before lambing or kidding. Keep pens dry by using adequate bedding, prevent contamination of feed and water and do not feed animals on the ground. Feeding a coccidiostat as a preventative before known times of susceptibility is also encouraged.
• Monensin (Rumensin) - approved for goats and effective day seven to ten of life cycle
• Lasalocid (Bovatec) - approved for sheep and effective day seven to ten of life cycle
• Decoquinate (Deccox) - approved for sheep and goats and effective day zero to 16 of life cycle
For prevention in young lambs and kids, treat the dams with a coccidiostat for at least 21 days prior to birth and continue to provide in kid or lamb feed for 60 to 90 days for additional protection. For prevention in growing animals entering the feedlot, feed a coccidiostat for 30 days after the animals go into the feedlot. Michigan State University Extension recommends feeding according to label instructions and working with your veterinary as some of these drugs are not labeled for both sheep and goats and may require off label use.Coccidiosis is preventable in sheep and goats. Knowing the facts of how it is transmitted, and its lifecycle will help producers maintain the health of their animals.
