Enjoy a welcome approach at Dainton Park Golf Club. A relatively modern club, built in the early 90’s by a local

landowner, Dainton Park opened its doors to anyone wishing to learn the game and enjoy a healthy lifestyle. The same family, and even some of the original staff and members, continue to offer a haven for golfers of all abilities, and a venue for so much more.

The course has matured into a first class test of golf for all abilities. Our league teams regularly enjoy success at county level, and the club has nurtured several county players, but we also cater for the novice and occasional golfers and their families.

We maintain that golf, unlike some sports, can be enjoyed by the whole family, so we provide a relaxed, friendly environment, and actively encourage family participation. Coupled with our excellent practice facilities, stylish

fitness suite and famous clubhouse delicacies, Dainton Park is the complete destination to enjoy your golf, keep fit, and socialise with friends.

Set in 125 acres of parkland, Dainton Park was designed by acclaimed golf course architect Adrian Stiff,

and commissioned in 1993. As with Stiff’s other notable courses in the West of England – The Kendleshire and The Players Club – multiple water features, sculpted bunkers, and generous fairways give the course an American feel.

Yet it was Stiff’s knowledge of the local countryside that defines the course, making the most of the undulating landscape by following the natural contours of the land, with magnificent views over Dartmoor National Park and the South Hams.

Initially the introduction of twenty thousand young sapling trees, numerous lakes and over a thousand of the designer’s trademark railway sleepers gave the course definition, but over time each hole has developed its own character.

Now fully fledged, the 18-hole course is an enjoyable par 72. The course provides a wonderful golfing experience, from both the quality of the course itself and the environment in which it sits, being the home to numerous of species of bird, waterfowl, and other wildlife.


If you have never played at Dainton Park you are in for a treat. Make the most of your trip by learning about

some of the pitfalls that lie in wait, and how to avoid them, by following our hole-by-hole tour.

Hole 1- Par 4 – 357 Yards

A straight forward tee shot to begin your round, the gentle slope will naturally take your ball to the right of the fairway, leaving you with a mid-to-short iron into the green. The putting surface is quite small and protected by water, so aim for the middle and be happy with two putts.

Hole 2 – Par 4 – 429 Yards

Without doubt one of the most picturesque holes in Devon, but this dogleg around a lake is also a real challenge. From the tee a long drive is required to find the centre of the fairway. Hitting left is not an option – if the lake doesn’t catch your ball, the bunker or OOB certainly will. Your approach demands a precise mid-to-long iron to reach the green.


On this par 5 long hitters beware, with an old barn house to the right and bunkers to the left of the fairway a straight tee shot is needed. But if you are successful, the green is reachable in two.

The shortest hole on the front nine is a real gem of a par 3. With a very long and narrow green 53 yards from front to back, your club selection will vary greatly depending on the position of the pin. But whatever club you choose accuracy is key.


If driving is your speciality, aim to reach the top of the ridge off the tee. Keeping to the right of the fairway will provide you with a better approach to the green. From there club selection depends on the pin position: the back of the green is safest, but it’ll leave you with a downhill putt to the front.


Though only a par 4, this hole is technically the hardest hole on the course. Aiming along the right-hand side of the fairway will allow you to miss the sand trap, but it will leave you a longer approach to the green. And be careful, with bunkers short left and right of the green any wayward shots will be punished.



With a strategically positioned sand trap to the right of the fairway the position of your tee shot is just as important as distance. The ideal shot would land on the left of the fairway, giving you the best crack at the elevated green.


This tee offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside, but with bunkers surrounding the green it is a challenge to find the putting surface in one. Whatever the outcome why not refuel by taking on some refreshments from our halfway house beside the tee?


Standing on the elevated tee you will be encouraged to open your shoulders, but beware of OOB to the left of the fairway. The green is protected by sand traps on either side, but try and leave your ball towards the front of the green for an uphill put.

A dogleg left with a wide fairway, do not try to cut the corner as your ball will end up OOB, and you may well damage neighbouring property. Playing to the marker post with a fairway wood, utility or long iron will leave you in good stead for a mid-iron shot to the green.


A straight drive to leave your ball just short of the large fairway bunkers is best off the tee, but it’ll leave you a tough uphill second shot, so make sure you take plenty of club. The 11th is a large green, but be sure to leave yourself an uphill put if you want to be sure of a par.


For your opening shot try to reach the bottom of the fairway with your drive. Around the 150 yard marker is a great position, and you’ll have a much easier approach to the green from the most level part of the fairway. The green is 2-tiered, so take plenty of club if the flag is at the back, as it can play further than it looks.



Don’t be fooled, while this is a relatively short par 4 the stream crossing the fairway 170 yards from the tee still poses plenty of danger. Leaving the driver in the bag is a good tactic. As long as you to hit the fairway your approach will be a short iron into the green.


Longer hitters relish this hole as clearing the water hazard and crossing over onto the fairway requires a carry of 200 yards off the tee. The alternative is to lay-up, but that will require two solid shots to the green, which is well covered by sand hazards short right and left, so again accuracy is crucial.


Offering more stunning views of South Downs and Dartmoor this par 3 looks straight forward, but it plays into the prevailing wind so take plenty of club, as there is little danger long. Watch out for the bunkers either side of the green, but the generous size putting surface provides an inviting target.

With trees lining the right hand side of the fairway, your biggest danger is going left over the boundary hedge out of bounds. The putting surface is small and well protected, so the sensible option is to lay up with your approach, and be happy to get on in three.


While this par 3 looks quite short, think carefully about your club selection as the biggest part of the green is at the back. If your tee shot is slightly wild there is out of bounds left and trees right, so try and find the narrowest gap just before the green.


From the tee be wary of the water hazard crossing the fairway about 100 yards short of the green. Your second shot needs to be on the flag to avoid the sand traps. Finish with a gross or nett par here and you will walk off the course happy.

Visitors are welcome to play Dainton Park every day. Handicap certificates are not required, although we do

encourage an understanding of the basic rules and etiquette of the game in order to ensure good pace of play.

Green fees vary depending on the time of year and day of the week. Cheaper rates are available for early afternoon and twilight rounds. Green fees can be booked online for a discount, so visit our website www.daintonparkgolf.co.uk to reserve a tee time. Alternatively call the Pro Shop on 01803 815000.

Feel free to come alone if you are new to the game. Our staff will advise on quiet times, or pair you up with members if you would like some local knowledge.

Electric buggies may be hired during summer months. Electric trolleys and pull trolleys are always available, as are rental clubs and shoes if you do not have your own equipment.

We genuinely believe that we have one of the most enjoyable courses around for visiting golf

societies. Every golf day is different, and we will tailor a package to suit you. A basket of balls on the driving range to warm up? A coffee and bacon roll at the ‘Halfway House’? A trick shot display on the 1st tee after dinner? Our team will assist you with every aspect of your day.

And be sure to wrap it all up with a meal in our Oak Room Restaurant, serving arguably the best golf course catering in the county, be it a full roast dinner or one of our famous steak pies. Any stray shots on the golf course will soon be forgotten!

Adult Golf Membership

We offer several adult membership packages depending on when and how often you wish to play golf:

Full membership gives you year-round unlimited access to the 18-hole course, the clubhouse, and all practice facilities.

Gold membership is ideal for those looking to play golf during the week, giving you unlimited access to the course Monday to Friday.

Silver members qualify for reduced green fees, while Intermediates aged 18-25 and full-time students can purchase memberships at various discounted rates.

In addition, married couples receive a 15% discount, and people over 80 receive a 25% discount.

Junior Membership

Recognised as an England Golf ‘GolfMark’ accredited club, Dainton Park offers a safe and enjoyable environment for boys and girls to learn the game and develop their own values.

Junior Membership is the best way to get the most from our PGA coaching academy and fully qualified professional staff, who are on hand to help younger players boost every part of their game.

Membership is free of charge for those under 12, and nominally priced thereafter. Golf is one of only a handful of sports that can be enjoyed by the whole family, which sits perfectly with the all-inclusive ethos at Dainton Park.

Corporate Membership

Here at Dainton Park our underlying belief is that golf is meant to be fun. We know if you’re not enjoying

your game you won’t keep it up, so we tailor our coaching to suit all abilities.

Our Teaching Academy is a distinguished centre recognized by England Golf as an official ‘Get Into Golf’ starter centre. We appreciate learning the game can be intimidating when confronted with the skills, specialist equipment, rules and etiquette for the first time, so our professionals work hard to create a fun, encouraging atmosphere.

They break the game into relevant modules, starting with a group lesson with your friends or work colleagues to ensure a fun, sociable and inexpensive introduction to the game.

Mike Cayless

A fully qualified member of the Professional Golf Association, Mike is the Head Professional at Dainton Park. Having played the game for over 30 years, representing the county at both junior and senior level before turning professional in 2001, Mike is a safe pair of hands to learn golfing techniques from scratch, or to help you refine your game. Through a combination of experience, excellent communication skills and a friendly manner, Mike has introduced numerous new golfers of all age groups to the game.

Richard Woods

Prior to turning professional in 2011 Richard Woods enjoyed a fruitful amateur career, representing Devon at all levels of the game. Richard began playing golf aged just six, and through hard work and dedication enhanced his game to hold a handicap of plus two. He then spent several years with American Golf honing his retail skills and his knowledge of the latest golf equipment, and is now a popular member of the coaching team at Dainton Park.

Ross Beer

Ross is an Assistant PGA Professional at Dainton Park. Having joined the club as a junior member aged 11, after just six weeks of lessons with Mike Cayless he fell in love with the game. Ross went on to win a handful of major competitions and represented the club at various levels before turning pro, and he now takes great pleasure from coaching and attracting new golfers to the club.

There has been a growing realisation in recent times that, along with professional coaching, golf

equipment should allow each player to make the most of whatever level of natural talent they possess.

Clubs bought off the shelf will be of a standard specification, but unfortunately golfers are not - we come in all shapes and sizes! The reality is that a golfer could have a perfectly acceptable technique but still be held back because their clubs are not entirely suited to their swing.

This is where custom fitting comes in. It is a relatively new phenomenon that allows a set of clubs to be married with each golfer’s physique and swing characteristics.

We understand the importance of being fitted correctly, whether for a glove, a pair of shoes, or ultimately for a set of golf clubs. Customising the clubs according to the user’s physical characteristics will train them to address the ball with the correct posture and develop a better swing plane.

The Clubhouse

The Dainton Park clubhouse offers a warm and welcoming environment for members and visitors, whether

you are playing golf or just meeting friends for lunch or coffee.

With panoramic views and a relaxed atmosphere, it is the perfect place to recline and enjoy the ambiance.

Refitted in 2011 by renowned local interior design firm Fruition, with an array of textured soft furnishings and dark wood finishes, the clubhouse combines comfortable lounging with bistro dining.

Customer service is paramount to everything we do at Dainton Park, and we are proud that our efforts were rewarded last year when our Front of House Manager won the South West regional final of the England Golf ‘Steward of the Year’ competition. Above all, our accommodating staff will make your visit to Dainton Park a memorable one.



The Oak Room Restaurant at Dainton Park serves arguably the best golf course catering in the county. We

have a fantastic reputation among our members, visiting golfers and the non-golfing public, so much so the restaurant is now a destination all by itself, and a staple of the Dainton Park experience.

Built from green oak timbers by local craftsmen in 2001, with a huge gable window offering magnificent views over the golf course, the restaurant provides a unique dining experience.

Our chefs serve a hot lunch buffet every weekday, using fresh local produce in a selection of wholesome, home cooked dishes. The menu changes daily according to the season, but examples of popular dishes include Shoulder of Lamb braised in a Tomato & Mint Sauce, Pork Loin cooked with Leeks, Cider & Apples, and Venison Casserole with Juniper Berries & Redcurrants. Main dishes are always served with fresh seasonable vegetables and followed by a selection of homemade desserts.

Every Sunday we offer two sittings for a traditional roast carvery lunch. Staples of the menu are Hand Tied Legs of Lamb, Topside of Beef, Loin of Pork and Roast Turkey Breast, all sourced from local butchers where possible, and served with at least eight different seasonal vegetables.

Fitness Suite

The fitness suite at Dainton Park has a range of cardio-vascular machines and resistance equipment to help

you get in shape, all the while with inspiring views across the golf course.

Our qualified instructors are on hand to advise and tailor a training program to suit you, offering one-to-one personal training, sports massage, nutritional analysis, injury rehabilitation and regular fitness assessments.

Membership of the Health Club is independent from the golf club, and open to everyone from as little as £3.56 per week. Opening hours are 7am to 9pm Monday to Friday, and 8am to 3pm at weekends. Golf club members and their spouses receive a 30% discount on their annual fee, while non-member couples save 10% on monthly and annual fees.

How To Find Us

Dainton Park Golf Club is located in an idyllic spot easily accessed from all parts of the South West. Only

five miles from Torquay and Paignton, and half an hour from Exeter and Plymouth, Dainton Park is two miles south of Newton Abbot on the A381 Totnes road, just before Ipplepen village.

For satellite navigation purposes, our postcode is TQ12 5TN.

Directions - Driving from Exeter – Take the A380 to the Torquay Rd roundabout, taking the third exit to join the A381. Follow the A381 through Newton Abbot and then down Totnes road.

Driving from Paignton – Take Torbay Road to Great Western road (A3022), continuing until you hit Marldon Rd. Following Marldon road, through Preston Down road, take the third exit for Vicarage Hill at the first roundabout. Continue straight until you reach Totnes road.

Driving from Plymouth – Join the A38 from the A374, and continue until you reach the roundabout for the A385. Follow the A385 to Totnes, then taking the first exit to the A381 and continuing until you reach the exit for Dainton Park Golf Club.

Driving from Torquay – Take the A3022 and Marldon road to Moles Lane. Continue

straight until you reach Gropers Lane, before taking right onto Totnes road.

Public Transport – The nearest railway station is Newton Abbot, which is less than four miles away. Three trains an hour depart from Plymouth with an estimated journey time of 40 minutes.
