DNA NEWSLETTERDear FriendsAre you all glued to the TV? At this time of year there is so much sport to enjoy. We have just delighted in the tennis at Roland Garros, wonderful rugby tests, the Blitzbokke achieving a miracle, our lady cricketers doing well, now the soccer World Cup with Wimbledon on the way and even more still to come. How can one ever work? There is just so much to do every day!

continue on page 6

SITTING ON THE STOEPWe did it!

All the way there and back again – sailing from Durban, stopping at those exotic Indian Ocean islands (even avoiding a cyclone) of Reunion, Mauritius and Seychelles, magical Petra, intriguing Suez Canal, Olympia and stunning beautiful Montenegro and Croatia and disembarking in Venice. How magical is that?

Now we are in harness again and enjoying our home, our own bed and seeing our friends again. It’s difficult to single out any one thing but there were a couple of special things we experienced:

With the French Open Tennis Champs just over, while away we came across a statue of Roland Garros at our first stop on the island of Reunion! He was famous as the inventor of a gun designed to fire forwards through an aeroplane propeller at the time of the First World War – obviously the bullets had to be timed to miss the propeller blades so precision was required. Those of you fans of Capt W E Johns ‘Biggles’ books will know how important that was in the early ‘dog-fights’ – (Biggles, of course, stayed young and flew in both world wars!). When Garros first used his system of deflectors and interrupter gear he had instant success and shot down five German planes in a couple of weeks. Unfortunately he was shot down by rifle fire and the Germans captured him, and his plane, and his invention was copied and used against the French. Garros did escape and got back into the war but was killed in October 1918 - one of France’s most famous sons.

So why the Garros statue in la Possession in Reunion? Well Reunion is French as was Garros who was born

in Saint Denis, Reunion on 6 October 1888. He was the first man to fly solo across the Mediterranean and he was one of France’s war heroes. So now we can understand why his statue is in Reunion but why the name of the Stadium when Garros actually loved rugby? Well Emile Lesieur who was involved in building the new tennis stadium in Paris insisted that it be named after his wartime friend and French hero, Roland Garros. Intriguing isn’t it?

The other unexpected special thing was in Venice where there was an exhibition of paintings by a famous Englishman, John Ruskin. Now I know a bit about Ruskin in a somewhat obtuse way.

There was a link between my still favourite author Arthur Ransome, who wrote “Swallows and Amazons” (about children sailing boats in the Lake District) and Ruskin. Ransome spent his holidays on the shores of Lake Coniston in the English Lake District where he made friends with W G Collingwood an antiquarian writer who lived there with his wife and family (an aside, two of W G C’s daughters were proposed to by Ransome although neither accepted!). They all remained friends however and Daddy Collingwood and his wife became honorary Uncle and Aunt to Arthur. And, would you believe it, W G Collingwood happened to live on the same lake as Ruskin’s Brantwood Estate, worked with Ruskin and wrote Ruskin’s first biography! There’s the link I’m always looking for!

I also knew a little about Ruskin because he was a famous art critic, connoisseur, and writer and became a voice of appreciation for the Arts and Crafts Movement sweeping Britain.

And here in the Doges Palace in Venice was an exhibition of Ruskin’s paintings so, of course we were

in! Fortunately I have a very game wife who calmly accepts my “got to see” moments.

Now, why on earth was there an exhibition of art by an Englishman in Venice? We were soon to learn. Ruskin had eleven visits to Venice and his drawings and books on the buildings and beauty of Venice added much to its fame at that time. This was when the Europeans and the British, in particular, were doing the Grand Tour which had strong affinity to Italy with Rome and Florence at its centre. The Venetians valued Ruskin’s interest and love for their city and here more than 100 years after Ruskin’s death were honouring him with an exhibition. By the way among the painting was a beautiful portrait of W G Collingwood.

We too were on our own Grand Tour - it was magic!

BIRDS, BEASTIES, TREES, UPDATES AND IMPORTANT THINGS You are shivering and we are basking in hot sun! It is hard to believe that it is winter here at the moment. There have been a number of cold fronts coming through – thankfully bringing much needed rain to the Cape – but it means we have been having berg wind conditions and temperatures higher than we experienced in summer!

I believe you had a wonderful Bird Walk a little while ago but I guess for the moment it is now quite difficult to ease out from under your warm duvet to go walking.

NATURE’S TRUE COLOURSWhat a lovely coloured in picture we received this month from Megan, age 10. You are the lucky winner of the prize – hope you enjoy it

CRACKERJACK “Remember that the most beautiful things in the world are the most useless: peacocks and lilies for instance.” Shores of Venice vol 1 (1851) chapter 2, sect. 17 John Ruskin

What joy Ruskin’s exhibition gave me and he is right – sit back and enjoy the beautiful things of this world.

I think we are very lucky!

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING

The AGM for the DNA was well attended by all members, interested parties and we were very fortunate to have in attendance Maureen van Jaarsveldt, one of the DHA trustees as well as David Weyers the general manager of Dainfern.

WELCOME AND INTRODUCTIONAfter the Welcome and introduction and presentation of the Agenda by Roy, We all enjoyed a DVD created by Mr Wim Spronk of his wildlife experience from his patio, capturing the bird life and animal life and visitors to his fish pond.

ACTIVITIES, FINANCIALS & CHANGING ENVIRONMENTWe then presented the activities of the Dainfern Nature Association in the past year, followed by an introduction by David Weyer’s with a commitment to working closely with the DNA. Roy then presented the financials to the members followed by a very interesting slide show and talk by Andre Marx focusing on our changing environment causing certain birds to leave Dainfern. However on the other side we gain birds who now prefer a woodlands environment created by the residents of Dainfern. FURTURE SHORT TERM PROJECTS

We then discussed the future short term projects which is the deepening of the dams in the wetlands area on the side of the 7th fairway. The second project is the installation of gabions to reinforce the river bank on the other side of the 7th fairway. This will be done in conjunction with the DHA.

DNA TROPHYThe DNA is looking for recommendations from the residents and owners in Dainfern as to a person on the Estate who has performed an outstanding task in supporting the wildlife, plant life or bird life on the Estate. We will then award the DNA trophy which has an honored place at the entrance to the newly renovated Clubhouse.

THANK YOURoy expressly thanked the trustees on the DHA on the wonderful condition that Dainfern is in at present and committed the DNA to work hand in hand with them to achieve our common goals for the elevation of Dainfern as a top residential estate in South Africa.

Roy Lailvaux - DNA Chairman

Roy Lailvaux was re-elected as chairman and Monica Condy will replace Linda Munro as secretary. The rest of the committee have kindly offered to stay and have been re- elected.

On that note we would like to say a BIG! thank you to Linda for all her hard work and we wish her well in her new home in Canada.

LEGAL MATTERS

When does the “Cooling-off” period apply in the sale of immovable property

Generally, most property transactions do not include the cooling-off period and a signed offer remains enforceable and valid, however certain circumstances are excluded. In this article I will be discussing circumstances that may include a cooling-off period.

When the purchaser and seller enter into a signed Offer to Purchase, it automatically becomes a legally binding Sale Agreement. The parties are therefore cautioned to first take cognizance that they are entering into a legally enforceable agreement and shouldn’t sign anything before being certain that they want to purchase the said property. Occasionally, there may be purchasers who are no longer interested in buying the property, but it is best to make this known expeditiously. In such a case, the Seller might be lenient and willing to look for an alternative buyer, rather than elongating the process and entering into legal proceedings. However, failure by the purchaser to comply with the Sale Agreement, which results in a breach in terms of the agreement, may result in the seller seeking legal advice resulting in the purchaser being in a financial dilemma. The purchaser may as a result be liable for damages suffered by the seller, wasted costs and the agent’s commission. In most situations, a Sale Agreement is only given to the seller after the buyer has signed. A purchaser should consequently think through the Sale Agreement before concluding it.

There are sometimes situations where the purchasers are eager to buy property and signs several offers. Subsequently, the purchaser could potentially be in a situation where they have entered into more than one legally binding Sale Agreement. Although it is not always certain that an offer is going to be accepted, it is advised to rather take caution and enter into one offer at a time.

Many people have a misunderstanding regarding the Consumer Protection Act (herein referred to as CPA) in a Sale Agreement and it conveying a cooling-off period. This is however only applicable in certain situations but most of the time it is not. It would be best to consult your attorney for advice in this regard should the need arise.

Residential property transactions for R250 000 or less are subject to the cooling-off period, as stated in the Alienation of Land Act. The latter Act further states that the cooling-off period is not applicable to residential transactions above the R250 000 threshold.

Colour and Wood Tone: Choose colours that go together

Use these tips to find the best paint colours and finishes to complement your wood furniture and trim work around the house.

Whether your furnishings are oak, pine, or mahogany, the beauty of the wood deserves a background that shows it to best advantage. The question, however, is not really what colour goes with oak or mahogany, but rather, what colour will best enhance your wood's finish.

DON'T GET TOO MATCHY-MATCHYDevelop a natural, evolved look in your home with items that go together comfortably but do not match exactly. Each type of wood has a characteristic colour and grain pattern, and the colour also can be altered with stain. Furniture makers have used stains and varnishes for centuries, both to enhance the appearance of the grain and to change the colour of the wood. The stains sold at Hardware Stores are generally named for the types of wood they simulate: Maple, cherry, walnut, mahogany, ebony and oak are the most common types.

Over time, wood furnishings acquire a rich patina that gives the surface depth and complexity. Newer woods and veneers may lack this complexity, but they still have an overall colour tone that may be yellow, orange, red-brown, bluish brown, or dark brown.

To choose wall colours or fabrics that will enhance your wood pieces, consider the dominant hues in the finish. Also consider whether you prefer the drama of high contrast or the richness of low-contrast pairings. Do not worry about all the wood pieces in a room matching -- the casual, comfortable, gathered-over-time look of mixed woods is perfectly appropriate today.

USE CONTRAST TO CALL ATTENTIONDark finishes, such as mahogany, walnut, or cherry, stand out in sharp relief against any light colour, whether it is a tint of green or blue or a hue from the sunny side of the colour wheel. In the same way, light wood and raw wood shows up boldly against dark or strong colour on the walls.

The contrast calls more attention to the furniture, a plus if you have a signature piece you want to focus on. If you have a lot of dark furniture in a light-colour room, the space may feel busier than it would if the furniture blended in. If you love the look of dark wood against light walls (or light furniture against dark walls), keep furniture arrangements orderly and streamlined to offset the impression of crowding.

continue on page 20- 18 -

To achieve high contrast with medium-tone finishes, keep the wall colour soft and light, creating as much difference as possible between the values of the wood colour and the wall. You can also use the colours in the furniture finish as a cue for wall colours. If the dominant colour in the wood appears to be red, then a green background will enhance and intensify the wood's hue.Golden-yellow woods look handsome against warm red as well as earthy greens, teal, or eggplant. Brown woods with yellow undertones relate to buttery walls yet stand out boldly for high-contrast drama.Antique woods, which have a patina that offers depth and complexity, may combine several tones -- that is why they can look good against a variety of light or dark colours.

MAKE A SUBTLE STATEMENTPairing hues of equal intensity or value creates low contrast. This does not mean the furniture fades into the background.

When you put a dark mahogany chest or ebony table against a deep red or blue-green wall, you create a dynamic balance between two hues of equal strength. The value of the wood colour equals that of the wall.

The same principle works with medium brown woods and muted or medium-tone colours; the effect is more restrained because the tones are subdued.

Warm neutrals, such as taupe, mushroom, or khaki, bring out the rich, toasty notes in medium brown woods. The furniture shows up handsomely, but the effect is quiet and low-key, producing a different kind of drama from that created by high contrast.

CONSIDER YOUR FURNITURE CHOICESColour preferences are entirely personal, but when you are choosing background colours for furniture, you may find that some do a better job than others of bringing out the natural beauty of wood.

Rooms connected by colour will create a cohesive, designer-level look. But you do not need to replicate the same colour scheme in every room. These tricks for carrying a colour scheme will show you how to create different looks from room to room, all unified by colour.

It is what difference we have made to the lives of others that will determine the significance of the life we lead.” – Nelson MandelaNelson Mandela International Day commemorates the lifetime of service Nelson Mandela gave to South Africa and the world. It was launched on his birthday, 18 July, in 2009 via a unanimous decision by the UN General Assembly.“It is in your hands to make of the world a better place,” he said a year earlier, calling on the younger generation to take up this task.Mandela Day calls on us all, every day, to make the world a better place. Walking on the Golf CourseThe Dainfern golf course forms an integral and important part of Dainfern to the extent that it is encapsulated in The Dainfern Mission Statement and by its very nature, together with security, green belts, recreation etc, creates the “lifestyle” to which all residents of Dainfern are well accustomed.

It is common cause that the Golf Course and nature trails should be accessible and be enjoyed by all stakeholders in a responsible manner. This responsibility should be exercised by both golfers and non-golfers alike; a responsibility that requires mutual respect and reciprocal common courtesy.

Conduct rules set out by the DHA and DCC provide adequately for the regulation of conduct by both golfing and non-golfing members. Accordingly, the DHA and DCC do not wish to further burden members with any additional rules or regulations that are in essence a matter of common sense and common

courtesy. Residents and golfers have for many years co-existed and enjoyed the golf course, nature trails and green belts and should continue to do so in the years to come.

Non-golfers are again requested to restrict their walking and jogging activities as far as possible to the golf cart paths provided, so as to minimise the risk of damage to the course and reduce the risk of self-injury. To this end, members are also requested to acquaint themselves with the clubs disclaimer notices which will be posted at the Clubhouse and at prominent positions around the golf course.

SA JKA KARATEBernard Buys (5th Dan, JKA) 083 709 9289 email: [email protected]

SA JKA Karate (Dainfern) students at SA JKA National Championships

SA JKA Karate (Dainfern) students performed exceptionally well at the recently held SA JKA National Championships at the Ellis Park Indoor Arena in Johannesburg on 25-26 May 2018. The SA JKA National Championships is the pinnacle event on the SA JKA calendar for the year.

The Dainfern team sent another strong team this year to the Nationals and in return captured 16 medals overall (another record for team Dainfern). Over 6000 entrants competed over the two days making it by far the largest karate tournament in the country. It is amazing to see young little 5 or 6 year olds performing in front of thousands of people.

It does wonders for their self confidence, just another example of how good karate is for young students. Students were awarded SA JKA National Colours for their achievements. The SA JKA National Championships qualified students to compete at the All Africa JKA Karate Championships to be held in September 2018.

We are extremely proud of all of our Dainfern students and we wish them all the best at the All Africa JKA Karate Championships later in the year. Resident JKA Karate Instructor and Dojo Head of SA JKA Karate (Dainfern), Sensei Bernard Buys (5th Dan, JKA), came in 2nd place in a very tough Senior Elite Men Division (38 contestants) and was also selected as coach for the South African National JKA Karate Team for the All Africa JKA Karate Championships. We wish team Dainfern all the best with the up and coming championships in September.

If you would like to join the Dainfern JKA Karate family, classes are held at The Pavilion on Wednesday and Friday afternoons.

The Cape Fox and the MeerkatThe tale of these two animals and their journey is now entwined - freedom is in sight.

Catch-up: The Cape Fox (Vulpes chama) was rescued in April; he was recently seen by Dr Lynne Hepplestone of Blue Hills Vet Hospital and our FFW Veterinary Director, he was given a clean bill of health and was ready for the final stage of rehabilitation and release. Claudius contacted Alma Stafford of Solid Earth Meerkat Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre who has a great release enclosure in the Posmasburg area where Cape Foxes occur and arranged for the Cape Fox to be transported there. The Meerkat (Suricata suricatta) who came to FFW via the Wild and Free Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre

in Hectorspruit as a surrendered pet will at last join a meerkat family in the safety of Solid Earth Meerkat Rescue Centre too.

The journey these animals took was a VIP trip thanks to Barry Levinsohn who offered to fly with the animals to Posmasburg with his friend and fellow pilot, Ryan Beeton who offered his plane as transport!

Ryan collected Claudius at his home at 6am en route to Free Wildlife. The animals were then quickly and quietly caught and put in their relevant transport boxes.

PLEASE ASSIST FREE WILDLIFE

Ryan was soon on his way with his precious cargo to Rand Airport near Germiston where Barry had the plane ready for take off.

At 7:53 they were airborne, Barry was flying and Ryan kept us updated with information and great photos.

At 09:59 they arrived at the Posmasberg airstrip and Alma was there to meet them. The animals were soon moved into Alma's car, safe and sound.

Alma asked them to kindly give a lift to 2 other meerkats who were scheduled to see a vet in Johannesburg, no problem of course!

All loaded, the guys quickly turned around and were soon taking off again, back to Johannesburg. They had another wonderful trouble free flight and were safely on the ground at Rand Airport by 12:40pm. The meerkats scheduled for medical treatment were collected and the rescue trip was completed.

FFW were privileged to be a part of the collaboration of so many passionate wildlife people to help these animals reach the next stage in their bid for a natural and wild life.

Thanks to Edenvale SPCA, Pieter Dibetso, FFW Sunday volunteers Kevin, Tyrone and Jean Marie, Dr Lynne Hepplestone, Deidre Joubert, Odette Joubert - courier for the meerkat - Barry Levinsohn, Ryan Beeton, Alma Stafford, and of course to Claudius, our FFW Animal Manager, whose TLC for our animals is never ending.

NATURE NEWSBy Wim Spronk

[email protected]

In a previous article I dealt with Bird Intelligence as opposed to Instinctive Behaviour. I mentioned in particular the clever things that members of the crow family do. The way they solve problems and use and even make tools for various tasks. I also mentioned our Green Backed Heron and the Boat Tailed Grackle in America.

The Genius of Birdsand Migrating Dragon Flies

THE HOUSE SPARROWRecently I read a book “The Genius of Birds” by Jennifer Ackerman. She mentioned an example of Bird Intelligence that really surprised me as it was about a bird we all know. The House Sparrow. Biologists in New Zealand saw House Sparrows repeatedly opening an automatic door that led to a cafetaria. They flew past the sensor or hovered in front of it or landed on top of it leaning forward triggering the sensor. The automatic door had been installed only two months earlier but the sparrows had easily found out how it worked both entering and leaving the cafetaria.

continue on page 42

The House Sparrow is of course wellknown to us in our gardens and in restaurants in Broadacres and in our Clubhouse. Introduced (instigated by Cecil John Rhodes) in the late 1800’s , it spread from Cape Town to Central Africa in no time. It has been named as the most successful invader in the world. Wherever it was introduced it spread to all the areas where there were people.

In South Africa they seem to co-exist quite happily with our Cape Sparrow. I think this is mainly because they don’t compete for nesting space. The House Sparrow nests in roofs and holes in buidings while the Cape Sparrow makes untidy nests in trees.

NATURE NEWS

DRAGON FLIESNot many people know that Dragon Flies migrate. In fact this has only become known recently. A biologist, Charles Anderson noted that each year millions of dragon flies arived at the Maldive Islands. People there were aware of this but no one knew where they came from. Anderson could not understand what they were doing there because none of the islands have any surface fresh water that dragon flies need. He started an intense study gathering information regarding arrival and departure dates of swarms of these insects not only from the Maldives but from India and other areas as well. By comparing the information he received he found that Dragon Flies left the Maldives and went to the Seychelles. From there they made their way to Central Africa and South Africa. It is almost the same route that the Amur Falcons take as these fly from Siberia and Mongolia to South Africa and back every year.

Most of these Dragon Flies are known as Globe Skimmers but there are other species as well. We some times see Globe Skimmers here in large flocks that often visit parking areas. I have seen them in the parking area in Sun City as well as in Broadacres where the females lay eggs on shiny cars. It is strange that they are attracted to shiny surfaces. In my garden I have a fish pond that to my mind is the ideal place for them to lay eggs and for their offspring to develop. However, they seem to prefer my swimming pool which is of course much more shiny.

Once in Africa they stay long enough to lay their eggs and provide their offspring with a good start in life.

It looks like they make their way back to India. A round trip of 14,000 to 18,000 kms . The longest migration route of any insect.

Recent research tends to show that it is the offspring in Africa that completes the journey while the parents stay behind to die.

Another scientist , Martin Wikilski, professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at Princeton University has done much research on Dragon Flies in America.

He fitted them with tiny radio tags. They weigh only 0.01 ounce and are battery operated transmitters that are the smallest ever used to track the migration of a wild animal.

He and his team tracked 14 Dragon Flies for up to 12 days with Wikilski folowing in a Cessna plane. From this plane he could track them from 12,8 kms.

They found that the migration behaviour is very similar to that of birds.

It is believed that almost 50% of all Dragon Flies migrate although not as far a the ones mentioned above.

With our ever improving technology and tracking systems we can look forward to finding answers to so many questions that Nature is doing its best to keep from us.

IMPORTANT: Please remember to keep on reporting any interesting sightings in your garden using my email address [email protected]. I would also welcome any sightings you may have had on a recent trip.

Prodotiscus regulusBrown-backed Honeybird

by André Marx

BIRD OF THE MONTH

The Brown-backed Sunbird (also known as the Sharp-billed Honeyguide) is an unobtrusive species that occasionally is observed in Dainfern Estate. This is a species that is probably frequently overlooked however, as it can easily be confused with similar birds. The plumage is mostly grey-brown, darker above than below, with the only noticeable feature being the tell-tale white outer panels in the tail that all honeyguide species show.

This feature is mainly evident when the bird is in flight and should be used to separate it from other brown nondescript birds such as the Spotted Flycatcher and some of the cisticolas and warblers which don’t show white tail panels at all. In addition, the sharp pointed bill is another feature to look for.

Essentially a bird of woodland areas, the Brown-backed Honeybird will usually perch near the top of the canopy. It will often perch in the open when it can be properly observed. At times it can sit quietly for fairly long periods and is most active when engaging in its interesting aerial display flight when birds will fly high in a circular motion, with one bird chasing another and emitting a high tseet sound. When seen this display is quite distinctive, but it can be difficult to discern two small brown birds flying high above you, unless you know the display call!

In Dainfern this bird has been observed in parts of the estate with good patches of indigenous bush. Then birds can be seen searching for insects, particularly aphids and scale insects which they find on the branches of trees. They will also attend to bee hives, particularly if there is beeswax available.

The Brown-backed Honeybird is a brood parasitic species like all honeyguides, and is known to parasitise cisticolas and warblers. In our region these probably are Tawny-flanked and Black-chested Prinia, Neddicky, and Levaillant’s Cisticola. Usually one egg is laid in the hosts nest.

An interesting bird that is not always encountered and goes unnoticed in the estate, but is very much a part of our diverse birding community in Dainfern. It should continue to thrive as long as the indigenous vegetation on the estate is preserved.
