Daimler Trucks at a GlanceEdition 2008
Trucks for the World!Daimler Trucks is in a better position today than ever before: Despite a significant decline in important markets, in 2007 we reached an EBIT of €2.1 billion and boosted our Return on Sales to 7.5% — the best result in history. And our perspectives for 2008 are good: We expect our sales to grow, and we intend to set Daimler Trucks to a sustained industry benchmark through our Global Excellence program.
Thanks to our five strong truck brands — Mercedes-Benz, Freightliner, Western Star, Sterling, and Mitsubishi Fuso — as well as the American school bus manufacturer Thomas Built Buses, we are ideally positioned to achieve this goal.
Our customers all over the world benefit from our international network of development and production locations, where we generate the best vehicle concepts and solutions. Our trucks are tailored to meet the transport needs of our customers — with innovative technologies for even higher levels of reliability, efficiency, and safety. We are also a global leader when it comes to protecting the environment. Today we already have the world’s largest fleet of environmentally friendly commercial vehicles in use by customers. Through our “Shaping Future Transportation” initiative we will continue to ensure sustainable mobility in the transportation sector. We impressively demonstrated that once again in January this year, when we became the first manufacturer to launch hybrid trucks on the road in Europe.
We also have many plans for the future. In all our activities the main focus is on the benefits to our customers. For this we work with passion and commit-ment on a daily basis worldwide to produce Trucks for the World!
Sincerely,
Andreas RenschlerMember of the Board of Management of Daimler AG and Head of Daimler Trucks Division

Daimler Trucks has six strong brands under its umbrella. Our products en-able us to offer tailored solutions and sustainable technologies worldwide.
Trucks Europe/Latin America
The Mercedes-Benz brand represents Daimler Trucks in Europe and Latin America, where it is a synonym for top quality, efficiency, reliability and sustainability. The brand Mercedes-Benz offers individual and reliable solutions in medium and heavy-duty trucks for long distance transport, construction sites or short-radius distribution. For many decades now, the pioneering spirit at Mercedes-Benz Trucks has brought forth groundbreak-ing innovations, ranging from alternative drive trains to active and passive safety systems.
Trucks NAFTA
Freightliner Trucks, the largest division of Daimler Trucks North America, manufactures Class 5-8 trucks that serve a wide range of commercial vehicle applications. Its commitment to innovation, technology and responsive customer relationships allow customers to “Run Smart”.
The Sterling brand is the epitome of reliability. The product lineup extends from light-duty Class 3 vehicles to heavy-duty Class 8 trucks, and the range of applications is similarly diverse. The trucks are used for regional transport, construction work, municipal applications, and delivery runs. The nature of Sterling is succinctly expressed by the brand’s advertising slogan: “All day. Every day”.
The Western Star brand offers premium-class heavy-duty trucks, primarily for use by owner-operators or small fleets. Western Star serves market niches such as special and construction site applications as well as long-haul transport. With their striking exteriors and preference for off-road applica-tions, the vehicles are without a doubt “serious trucks for serious truckers”.
The yellow school buses of Thomas Built Buses are a common sight on North American roads. North America’s leading school bus manufacturer can look back on a long history, as Thomas Built Buses has been the em-bodiment of innovative design, safety and top quality since 1916.
Trucks Asia
The Mitsubishi Fuso brand is renowned in Asia, the Middle East, Africa and around the world as a manufacturer committed to quality. With a clear focus on quality, efficiency and hands-on usability, Mitsubishi Fuso designs and delivers vehicles that customers can trust, day after day. Mitsubishi Fuso trucks and buses are backed by a broad parts and service commit-ment that goes the extra mile.
Today, Mitsubishi Fuso Truck and Bus Corporation is an integral part of Daimler Trucks and plays a principal role as its Asia pillar and as a compe-tence center for light-duty trucks and advanced hybrid technology. Mitsubishi Fuso is “All for You”.
Global ExcellenceManagement of Market Cycles
The first initiative — “Management of Market Cycles” – is designed to bufferthe impact of cyclical developments typical for the sector on Daimler Trucks, thus ensuring the division’s long-term profitability. The commercial vehicle sector is subject to particularly strong cycles which vary accord-ing to the specific use of the vehicles for business purposes, vehicle fleet life cycles exchange rate effects, the development of the global economy, and emissions legislation. The goal is to ensure sustained profitability in all market situations in the future by managing the fluctuation of market cycles and the continued pusuit of the policy for “profit margins instead of sales volume”.
Operational Excellence
The second initiative — “Operational Excellence” — concentrates on the rigorous reduction of material expenses and fixed costs, as well as on the optimization of global processes and increased flexibility of production plants. As the world’s largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, Daimler is intensifying its efforts to generate further synergy effects and economies of scale by further networking its individual functions and embedding its pro-ducts in an intelligent component-sharing strategy. As a result, future truck generations will be equipped not only with a common heavy-duty engine platform, but also will a common electrical and electronic architecture and standardized axle components.
Growth and Market Penetration
The objective of the third initiative is to further consolidate Daimler Trucks’ strong global position as the world market leader for trucks. This includes exploiting new markets including India, China, and Russia, which are dis-playing above-average growth rates. We utilize different market penetration strategies which are suited to the respective market situations. On markets where we are already active, we want to further strengthen our presence and become more thoroughly aligned to the customers’ needs.
Future Product Generations and Technologies
Ensuring that future product generations will offer innovations and even more value our customers is the strategic goal of the fourth initiative of Global Excellence. In this way, Daimler Trucks is underscoring its leadership in the field of new technologies. This is clearly evidenced in the new prod-uct generation of the Mercedes-Benz Actros. Daimler places a major focus on alternative drive systems. The company is leading in the development of hybrid drives for buses and trucks. The activities, including those in the field of natural gas and fuel cell, are combined in the Daimler initiative “Shaping Future Transportation”.
Global Excellence
The “Global Excellence” program has been part of the Daimler Trucks stra-tegy since 2005. The program focuses on short-, medium-, and long-term objectives, which are primarily aimed at increasing efficiency and exploiting economies of scale. The program comprises four initiatives: Management of Market Cycles, Operational Excellence, Growth and Market Penetration, and Future Product Generations and Technologies. The focus in recent years has been on the strategic pillars “Management of Market Cycles” and “Operational Excellence.” The success of the Initiatives is demonstrated by the record earnings in 2007.
In 2008 and the years to follow, the implementation of the Global Excel-lence program will be focused more intensively on the initiatives “Growth and Market Penetration” and “Future Product Generations and Technologies”.

Shaping Future Transportation
In addition to passenger cars, commercial vehicles are also at the center of public attention in the debate regarding increasing emissions and the depletion of natural resources. Although the vehicles are indispensable for economic growth and personal mobility, people are also demanding that they be as environmentally compatible as possible. As the leading developer of technology in this field, Daimler is well prepared to take on this responsibility.
Daimler Trucks is working hard on drastically reducing the fuel consumption and exhaust gas emissions of its commercial vehicles. Daimler’s broad-based commitment here as the world’s leading manufacturer of commercial vehicles is underscored by its “Shaping Future Transporta-tion” initiative, which was launched late last year with the presentation of 16 trucks and buses from the Mercedes-Benz, Freightliner, Mitsubishi Fuso, Orion, and Thomas Built Buses brands.
The products included vehicles in customer use as well as world-premiere models for alternative drive systems and fuels. Hybrid technology plays a key role in these vehicles, as it can reduce diesel consumption by up to one third, depending on the application. This is demonstrated by the hybrid buses and trucks from the Daimler brands Orion, Freightliner, and Mitsubishi Fuso, which are in widespread use by customers in the U.S. and Japan. Daimler is the global market leader for hybrid commercial vehicles, with some1,600 Orion hybrid buses already on the road in North America and a further 1,200 vehicles on order. In addition, Daimler has delivered more than 160 Freightliner trucks and 350 buses and light trucks from Mitsubishi Fuso. If natural gas-powered Mercedes-Benz trucks and buses in Europe are added to the total, Daimler has already delivered well over 7,000 commercial vehicles equipped with alternative drive trains to customers who are now using them in their everyday operations.
Further expansion planned
The alternative drive systems from Daimler Trucks and Daimler Buses are now scheduled to be used by customers in further product segments and regions.
In North America, Freightliner will manufacture 1,500 M2 hybrid trucks in the next three years future, and Thomas Built Buses will produce hybrid versions of their legendary school buses. In the meantime, the second-generation hybrid bus has been launched on the market in Japan under the name Mitsubishi Fuso Aero Star Eco Hybrid. And in Europe, Mercedes-Benz handed over the first Atego BlueTec Hybrid delivery truck for trial at the beginning of 2008. Also in 2008, the first Mercedes-Benz Citybus Citaro G BlueTec Hybrid will be brought into trail.
On the road to zero emissions
Through continuous further development, Daimler’s diesel engines have evolved into high-tech drive systems that will remain the chief means of commercial vehicle propulsion for many years to come. Diesel engines still have great potential, as evidenced by their steadily reduced emissions and continuously increasing fuel efficiency. In a series of development steps, emissions of particulates and nitrogen oxides have decreased by more than 90% on average since 1990 alone.
Mercedes-Benz trucks and buses equipped with state-of-the-art BlueTec diesel technology combine these environmental improvements with economic benefits for the vehicle operator. That’s because BlueTec technology cuts fuel consumption considerably, compared to other exhaust treatment systems. In the case of long-haul trucks, for example, the annual reduction amounts to around 2,000 liters of fuel, or more than five tons of CO2 emissions. By comparison with other types of automobiles, and taking the high transport volumes of its commercial vehicles into account, trucks that only consume one liter of fuel per 100 kilometers are therefore already a reality.
Daimler commercial vehicles marked with in the product list are from the
Shaping Future Transportation initiative.
