Susie Uses Sunscreen!

1. Susie wakes up for the morning.

2. Naturally, as a sorority girl, Susie checks her emails and texts first thing.

3. Susie gets an email on her BlackBerry/laptop!

4. The email reminds Susie to apply facial sunscreen and informs her of the weather and the daily UV index.

5. The email also provides Susie with a Google form in which she can track her sunscreen use.

6. Susie puts sunscreen on and fills out the easy Google form.

Theoretical Justifications

• Improves self-efficacyo Google form allows user to stay on track with goal by

recording sunscreen use Increased user involvement

Shortcomings of the Design

• Not everybody is big on email (although most Stanford sorority girls use it frequently)o If the e-mail isn't checked in the morning, the design loses

its efficacy• Not everybody has a smartphone

o Makes it harder to record sunscreen applicationo Users may not be able to receive emails on their phones

•  Some users may find the format easy to ignore

Expansion - What Else is Possible?

• Other Form Factors/ID possibilitieso Text message reminders and trackingo Tracking through Facebook, Twitter, creating mobile apps

to remind and record•  Other features and interactions

o Additional information about the benefits of sunscreen and the detriments of not using sunscreen Skin cancer, sun spots, wrinkles, other forms of skin

damageo Participants could find ways to encourage/further remind

other participants to apply sunscreeno Product recommendations

Next Steps in Design Process

• Contact participants about experiment involvement• Create pre-experiment slideshow outlining the benefits of

daily sunscreen application and the detriments of harmful UV rays

• Suggest product switch to makeup, lip balm, and moisturizers that contain SPF

• Set up automated email threado Automated weather report updates?o Automated UV index updates?

• Provide link for participants to view results of sunscreen application tracking

• Find engaging links that encourage sunscreen use to include in emails
