Big support for tax renewCongresswoman Losi Capps showed her support for schools measures X and Y in front of La Cumbre Junior High yesterday morning.

DAILY SOUND / Victor Maccharoli

BY JOSHUA MOLINADAILY SOUND EDITOR

More than 50 education leaders andcivic activists gathered on Monday infront of La Cumbre Junior High Schoolto announce their support of Measures

X and W, which if approved would bringin $17 million to Santa Barbara schools.

The money from the $54 parcel taxmeasures on the June 5 ballot would sup-port music, math, science and technologyinstruction. The money, officials say, wouldpay for teachers, not administrative salaries. “Our schools have been decimated in

recent years,” said First DistrictSupervisor Salud Carbajal. “California

used to be one of the leaders of the edu-cation system in our state. Sadly, wehave fallen behind.”But Carbajal quickly added that he

believes in the local community’s abilityto help its own.“I am proud of the Santa Barbara com-

Jr. Spirit of Fiestareceives her sashing

BY CAMILLA BARNWELLDAILY SOUND CORRESPONDENT

With her white, satin “Junior Spirit of Fiesta2012” sash officially placed across her polka-dot dress, 11-year-old Jesalyn McCollum real-ized a once impossible dream had come true.“It finally feels complete, like I’m officially

the Junior Spirit now,” said a beaming Jesalyn, who received the symbolic sash Saturdayevening before a festive crowd of about 70friends and family members gathered in theRanchero Room of Harry’s Plaza Café.The rustic Ranchero Room, where photo-

graphs of early Fiesta celebrations line thewalls, was an ideal setting for the pre-Fiestacelebration. The event included a performanceby this year’s Spirit of Fiesta Sabrina Ibarraand the presentation of the sash to Jesalyn bylast year’s Junior Spirit, Anais Crespo Peña.

“Jesalyn is so polite, so positive, such anamazing dancer,” said Ibarra, a student atSanta Barbara City College. “She is the perfectJunior Spirit.”Anais added, “It felt wonderful, amazing,

fantastic, because I finally got to present thesash to one of my best friends. She reallydeserved that sash.”Bucking Fiesta tradition, Jesalyn received

her title sash almost a month after the compe-tition and judging took place. The April 14event has been marred with controversy andconfusion after Old Spanish Days representa-tives admitted to an error in failing to verifythe age and residency of this year’s otherJunior Spirit, 12-year-old Sadee Broida, whojudges selected as the winner at the competi-tion.According to excerpts from the Spirit audi-

tion eligibility requirements, applicants musthave been between the ages of 9 and 11 on theday of the audition, April 14th 2012. They alsomust be a resident of Santa Barbara County.Sadee, who turned 12 before the competition, attends San Antonio Elementary School inOjai, which is in Ventura County.Still, Old Spanish Days decided to move

forward by attempting to appease all sides;Sadee was allowed to keep her title and

Jesalyn, who was first runner-up at the compe-tition, was awarded an equal title. On Saturday night, all of those details

seemed unimportant to Jesalyn, whose flamen-co shoes never stopped moving as she dancedthroughout the crowd in her aqua blue andfuchsia, polka-dot dress.“I am so excited to share this title with

Sadee Broida,” said Jesalyn, her mind nowofficially free to whirl with visions of dancingat the Mission in the quintessential whitedress, an enduring tradition of Fiesta exclusiveto the Junior Spirit and Spirit. “I know we aregoing to make this a great Fiesta.”The sash – a traditional rite of passage for

both the Spirit and Junior Spirit – is not only akeepsake for the title-holder, but also symbol-ic of their role as a young ambassador for

Facebook Inc has raised the price range on its initial publicoffering to $34 to $38 a share in response to strong demand, asource familiar with the situation said, giving the No.1 socialnetwork a valuation exceeding $100 billion. At the mid-point of $36, Facebook would raise $12.1 billion

by selling 337.4 million shares. The company founded in aHarvard dorm room by Mark Zuckerberg, who turned 28 onMonday, had originally aimed for $28 to $35 a share.Wall Street had expected the company to increase the price

range, with investors keen to get in on Silicon Valley's largestever IPO that eclipses Google Inc's 2004 debut. Its roadshowbegan last week and has drawn crowds. The company plans to close the books on its IPO on Tuesday,

two days ahead of schedule and in a signal that the landmarkinitial share sale is drumming up strong demand, a secondsource familiar with the deal told Reuters earlier.

DAILY SOUND EDITORPing-Pong in the Plaza? Sounds like

fun and the idea certainly got its shareof back-and-forth action last week.Santa Barbara View picked up the

story last week. Edhat appeared to havethe scoop in its raw form on April 14,when someone in the site’s Questionand Answer section said they “heardabout a group” trying to set up publicPing-Pong. The question received 928 views and

11 comments.Santa Barbara View linked to the

Indy’s story by News Editor MattKettman, and now the story is every-where.Essentially a group wants to put an

outdoor Ping-Pong table in downtownlibrary plaza. The city had proposed an overhaul of

the plaza, but those plans were put onhold after the state ended the redevelop-ment agency.“Ping-Pong is available to people of

all walks of life, and to all ages and skilllevels,” according to the group’s Website. “We see this table as a singularway to bring a social sport, that’salready well-loved, to public spaces.”The long Website address,

http://www.publicpingpongsantabarbara.com/ states that, “we have benefactorswho will donate our first table, the costof delivery, and installation. We justneed approvals.”

The library board is supposed to tack-le the issue soon.

Edhat’s Question and Answer fea-ture often breaks news, or sometimesnot. One of the Questions on Mondaywas “Can anyone identify this growthon the leaves of this nectarine tree? Inless than two hours though, the questiongot about 314 reads, which is more thansome linked news stories get.

Speaking of Q & A, Noozhawkseems to very proud of its Q & A fea-ture of local candidates running forelection. A Monday headline says:“2012 Santa Barbara County Board

of Supervisors Candidate Q&As:Noozhawk's popular candidate Q&Ashelp voters pick their winners.”They have Q&A interviews with

Salud Carbajal, Doreen Farr and StevePappas, among others.Noozhawk.com ends its Q & A fea-

ture with this declaration of objectivi-ty: “By the way, for those readers whoare not familiar with Noozhawk’s politi-cal endorsement policy, we don’t haveone. Noozhawk has chosen to maintainits objectivity and provide readers with

as much information as we can, withouttelling you how we think you shouldvote.”

If you are looking for informed, strong opinions on city issues, fromsomeone not afraid to say what shemeans, look no further than to LorettaRedd on Santa Barbara View. Last weekRedd, a former Daily Sound Columnistpenned a strongly worded column onthe Veronica Meadows project, whichhas sparked wide debate in the commu-nity.Redd comes out in support of

Measure Y, which if approved by voterswould allow developer Mark Lee tobuild a bridge on city land over ArroyoBurro Creek so that motorists canaccess the development. She takesexception to the way the developer hasbeen characterized by Measure Y oppo-nents. Redd believes it’s a good project,

noting that former Mayor Marty Blumand conservative councilman DaleFrancisco both back the project.(Environmentalists believe Lee’s creekrestoration project is essentially anattempt to buy approval of his luxuryhome development).“I will bet you a dime on a doughnut

that if Mark Lee was proposing that all25 homes be affordable, rather than twoof the 25, the ‘No on Y’ crowd wouldbe awarding him a gold leaf citation of

California used to be the leader and modelfor education. But those days are long over.Massive budgets cuts statewide — more

than $20 million locally — have decimatedclassrooms. The painful result? Weakenedschools and ballooned classroom sizes.Local school district staff and officials have

done their best to keep cuts out of the class-room the last decade, even as the state has con-sistently ripped and grabbed money away. It’sbeen entirely unfair. But this June, voters have an opportunity to

help our schools and our children. The Daily Sound strongly encourages vot-

ers to support Measures W and X, both ofwhich would help support music, math, sci-ence and technology instruction. Math classesin 9th grade would help maintain a student-to-teacher ration of 20:1 if these measures pass.Measures W and X are $54 parcel tax meas-

ures and together would bring in more than$17 million in funding to elementary, juniorhigh and high schools. Voters in Goleta andMontecito will only vote on Measure W, whichwill benefit the junior high and high schools.Voters in the city of Santa Barbara will vote onboth X and W, which go to help all of the15,000 students in the elementary and juniorand high schools. Both measures require a two-thirds majori-

ty vote.

The money will mostly pay for teachers —not administrative salaries — to provideinstruction for these classes, but also equip-ment, depending on the needs of individualschools. These two measures are the most important

on the ballot and deserve your support.Measures X and W are continuations ofMeasures H and I, which voters approved in2008. The measures expire in 2013. In order tocontinue current levels of instruction in the tar-get areas, voters must approve these measures. You don’t have to have a child in the public

school system to support these measures. Acommunity benefits from and educated popu-lace and workforce. These children are ournext generation and deserve schools that canproperly prepare them for college and the jobmarket.Education should be nonpolitical. The Daily

Sound encourages all voters to put their per-sonal political perspectives aside and dowhat’s right for our kids. Vote for Measures Xand W.
