Airbus details developments at Helitech International STAND C100

Airbus Helicopters has made an array of announcements at Helitech International, from new technical developments to platform sales.

On 4 October, the OEM signed a contract with Airtelis, with the support of Nova Capital Group, for three H215 helicopters.

Airtelis utilises aircraft for infrastructure assembly, repair and maintenance support as well as load transportation. The company’s fleet currently comprises two H225s. The first H215 will be delivered in late October.

Régis Magnac, head of customer operations at Airbus, told Helitech International Daily News that the show has been a great success for

the company, both in terms of orders and the opportunity to display a number of its platforms, including the H125, H135, H145 and H160.

‘This has been a great Helitech International for Airbus Helicopters, and we are proud to showcase our

large and versatile range of helicopters and services at the show. We are here to support our customers, and continue to help them succeed in their operations, as with Airtelis who has placed their trust in us for three H215s,’ he said.

Record attempt pilot recounts survival story Sergey Ananov’s attempt to become the first solo pilot to circumnavigate the globe in a helicopter weighing less than 1t ended when he was forced to land in Arctic waters, he told delegates at Helitech International.

Ananov undertook the challenge in a Robinson R22. In the keynote session at the event, he explained that he believes a transmission failure caused the sudden loss of momentum while he was 200km from the nearest coast in the Hudson Strait in July 2015.

Without enough fuel to make it back to land, he landed the R22

on water in the Arctic Circle, where the Delorme inReach satellite tracker installed on the aircraft transmitted one final signal before the helicopter sank.

This provided rescuers with a location reading of the aircraft at the point of the forced landing, but left Ananov stranded on an ice floe.

‘It was definitely one of the most dangerous places to crash… remote and cold,’ Ananov said, as he described his two-day ordeal before being rescued by the Pierre Radisson, a Canadian Coast Guard icebreaker.

Despite the dramatic end to the adventure with only 15% of the route

left to fly, Ananov told Helitech International Daily News of his determination to reattempt the challenge, once again in an R22. By Alice Budge

In a separate announcement, Airbus detailed its onboard image processing capabilities for VTOL systems as part of Project EAGLE – Eye for Autonomous Guidance and Landing Extension. One of the project’s main objectives is to improve safety and automation for future and current aircraft.

The experimental system is intended to aid with the execution of automatic approaches and landing in challenging environments. Initial flight tests on a testbed helicopter are expected imminently, while ground tests began five months ago.

The company also announced that it has recently finalised the first full-scale testing for the propulsion of the CityAirbus e-VTOL aircraft.

Furthermore, German operator Global Helicopter Service, which utilises the H225 – also present at Helitech International – is now the launch customer for the OEM’s FlyScan data analysis software.

The big story for Airbus is the first public outing of the H225 at a major commercial helicopter show in Europe since the fatal incident in April of last year.

Guillaume Faury, CEO of Airbus Helicopters, commented at Helitech International: ‘I understand it takes time to restore trust after this accident... [We] will explain the safety measures that have been put in place, and that’s why I am very happy to be here at Helitech International to explain and to share and to guide people with the safety measures for the 225.’By Helen Haxell

HeliSpeed contract awards signal global footprint increase STAND C121

HeliSpeed continues to grow following the award of two contracts to provide its services to ITC Aero-Leasing of Japan and United Helicopter Services of Portugal.

The contracts were signed in September and June 2017 respectively, the company told Helitech International Daily News.

HeliSpeed, a global pilot provider, supports a number of international ferry flights, flight tests and other ad hoc pilot requirements across the globe.

The UK-based company has a database of 300 pilots within 26 different licencing authorities.

‘We aim to offer a turnkey package to our customers, and provide a one-stop shop,’ said Geoff Packer, CEO at HeliSpeed.

Recently, the company moved a Sikorsky S-92 from Greenland to Brazil, an operation that typically takes up to five days. Packer also confirmed that HeliSpeed had been tasked with relocating aircraft from the UK to Africa.

In addition, the company provides pilots for flight testing at the end of a maintenance period or in the context

of an aircraft lease or sale. Packer said that there are a number of MROs present at Helitech International to which the company supplies pilots for rotorcraft testing.

The company received ISO9001:2015 certification in March 2017, meaning there is an approved company structure and quality control in place to meet this demanding industry standard.

Furthermore, HeliSpeed is able to supply customised training programmes to support customers and their pilots with PPL, CPL and ATPL(H) qualifications on any type of helicopter and for specific mission profiles.

HeliSpeed offers HeliTrax, a complete system for tracking, search and selection. It provides operators with mission and aircraft information, enabling them to view real-time data on the HeliSpeed pilots who are supporting the required mission. By Beth Maundrill

North America-based Aircraft Maintenance Systems (AMS), a first-time exhibitor at Helitech International, has its eye on the European market.

Aircraft maintenance provider targets European market

The company wants to bring its maintenance tracking software and supply chain management solutions to European private operators and MRO companies.

Speaking to Helitech International Daily News, Thomas Grimaud, CEO at AMS, said: ‘The European market is a big market for us

– a big target – as there are a lot of operators, but it is difficult to target from North America’.

AMS has developed software that can be used to track maintenance of any rotary- or fixed-wing platform, and is developing

new software features targeted more at the MRO market and designed to be EASA-compliant.

The software allows customers to manage their aircraft maintenance programme by monitoring aircraft, tracking inspections and generating due item lists and work orders.

The AMS supply chain management solution enables users to manage the full lifecycle of parts and equipment from storage to repairs, as well as track and manage inventory and internal maintenance costs, and invoice customers. By Alice Budge

Universal Avionics Systems is displaying its latest retrofit integrated flight deck at Helitech International as it seeks to enhance its presence within the rotorcraft market.

InSight, the company’s new cockpit display system, has been certified in the fixed-wing marketplace, and is currently being adapted for the helicopter industry. A number of projects are in development to support this effort, explained Grady Dees, director of technical sales at the company.

The system is offered in either a two-, three- or four-screen configuration, which will enable it to be installed on a range of helicopter models ‘in the high-end [FAA] Part 27 and Part 29 markets’, he said.

InSight has been designed ‘to bring more technology to the cockpit than the legacy system offered, while reducing the price’, Dees said. ‘By embedding LRUs such as synthetic vision, radio tuning and electronic charting, the cost and weight of

the system has been brought down.’

With the fixed-wing retrofit market in decline, the company is looking to expand its presence within the rotary industry. ‘We see a lot of potential growth in the rotorcraft market for display retrofit,’ Dees commented.

Universal Avionics’ legacy retrofit cockpit displays have been installed on a range of platforms including the Airbus Super Puma and the Sikorsky S-61. Initial installation has been completed on the S-76, with flight tests expected to begin next week at Heli-One Canada. By Alice Budge

Kaman Aerosystems has signed a contract with Columbia Basin Helicopters for the purchase of a K-Max aircraft, which will be delivered in 2018.

The company resumed production of the K-Max in 2015 at its manufacturing line in Connecticut, and committed to build at least ten new aircraft.

Terry Fogarty, senior director of business development at Kaman, said: ‘With this agreement we have sold our initial production lot of ten aircraft, and look forward to offering additional aircraft in the marketplace.’

The company has also sold the type to Chinese company Lectern Aviation, which will utilise the helicopter for fire-fighting operations alongside its Mil Mi-26T. Kaman will be assisting the customer with pilot training,

K-Max orders stack up for Kamanwhich will take place in the US. The company also has a Swiss customer, Rotex Helicopter.

Fogarty confirmed that Kaman has customers lined up for seven K-Max, which will be delivered at a rate of one per month. The company has the capacity to build six to eight aircraft per year.

‘We have gained worldwide interest,’ said Fogarty. ‘We have had enquiries from Eastern Europe [at Helitech International], which is a new market.’

The first K-Max to be manufactured at the new plant in Connecticut completed its initial flight in May 2017, 26 years after the model first flew.

The single-engine K-Max has a counter-rotating rotor system, and is customised for external load operations.

The aircraft can lift up to 2,722kg on its cargo hook. The K-Max is capable of transporting

more than 68t in one hour, amounting to 907t of cargo in a single day.

Other features include crashworthy fuel systems, an energy-absorbing pilot seat and a 50hp auxiliary power pack.

According to the OEM, the helicopter has a high availability rate and lower maintenance-to-flight ratio than similar aircraft.

SAS to support more Leonardo platforms STAND K100

UK-based operator and Leonardo Helicopters service centre Specialist Aviation Services (SAS) is expanding its support capability to the helicopter OEM.

With 12 AW169s ordered, six of which have now been delivered, SAS sees an opportunity to expand its support for more Leonardo aircraft, especially the AW139.

At Helitech International, one of the company’s customers, the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance, displayed its AW169 in EMS configuration.

‘Air ambulance charities are one of our main customers,’ Nigel Lemon, sales director at SAS, told Helitech International Daily News. ‘We provide the aircraft, crews, maintenance and the medical fits.’

In addition, SAS has been selected by Cornwall Air Ambulance Trust to provide an AW169 in EMS

configuration under a ten-year contract starting in 2019.

The decision follows a competitive tendering process ahead of the end of the existing contract with SAS. The new aircraft will replace the current MD902 Explorer, based at the charity’s Newquay Airport HQ.

SAS was a launch customer for the AW169 after placing an initial order for six of the aircraft in 2012. The aircraft for the Cornwall Air Ambulance represents the ninth aircraft of the type that SAS has delivered. It is already operating four AW169s, with further examples entering service in 2018.

‘We have worked with Leonardo to develop the maintenance strategy for the AW169,’ said Lemon.

‘We see a real opportunity to expand our support to more types in this area, and are looking to take advantage of our strong working relationship with Leonardo and the commonality within

the AgustaWestland family product range.’

SAS supports both its own fleet and third-party operators, the latter of which is the focus as the company expands its services to the AW139.

SAS has a large team of base engineers, and its field engineers are all licensed on the AW169 and are now undergoing AW139 training. The company is also setting up a service centre at Redhill.

The plan is to have the latter facility approved for both the AW169 and AW139 and operational before the end of the year. The company currently has a roster of 70 pilots.

At this time, SAS is not planning to acquire AW139s, and will instead focus on support services for the type, before expanding its offering to the AW189.

The company’s primary customer base is in the EMS sector, and Lemon said that demand in the UK for HEMS is expanding.

‘Air ambulance crews are going from single to two pilots, and their missions are extending into night shift operations, meaning they are operating in 19-24h shifts,’ he added. By Beth Maundrill

New safety service for H125 pilots STAND L81 AND E130

Coptersafety and Østnes announced a new partnership at Helitech International, to improve helicopter training standards by introducing ‘Safety as a Service’ for Airbus H125 pilots.

Coptersafety is providing full flight simulator training to pilots of the most common helicopter platform in the Nordic countries.

Under the agreement, Østnes, a Nordic Airbus Helicopters distributor, is now an authorised dealer for Coptersafety’s training services, which will include its new H125 level D simulator.

According to Mikko Dahlman, CEO at Coptersafety, the cooperation marks a new approach to safety training in the rotorcraft industry, which he hopes will efficiently mitigate ‘the number of single engine onshore helicopter accidents’. By Alice Budge

Medical interior in focus for Heliair, AAT STAND E21

Austrian companies Heliair and Air Ambulance Technologies (AAT) are showcasing a new EMS interior on board an Airbus Helicopters H135 for the first time at Helitech International.

Heliair has created a carbon-fibre interior, known as Kokon, which has been fitted with medical device holders, oxygen systems and flooring from AAT.

The interior also includes new LED lighting, which is optimal for EMS operations.

Speaking to Helitech International Daily News, Wolfgang Burger, technical director at Heliair, said: ‘We will open up the order books in summer 2018 when the product will be more mature after we have flown it in our own fleet... which means we will get feedback from our own doctors.’

The grid system in the Kokon design allows for easy drilling of attachment points for the AAT medical device holders.

‘With the life cycle of medical devices getting shorter, we needed to come up with a basic concept to increase flexibility,’ Burger added. Fixtures and holders must be newly approved for each new device.

He also noted that the load-carrying attachment point could be used for law enforcement and VIP applications, if desired by customers.

The interior has a load-carrying capability of 76.5kg, and weighs just 42.5kg. Kokon is a self-supporting interior trim, and is coated with anti-bacterial paint.

The patented design features EASA-certified holders. According to Heliair, the intelligent construction of the interior makes maintenance work easy.By Beth Maundrill

Europe continues to be a key market in the law enforcement sector for helicopter OEMs, who are making efforts to offer improved capabilities and intuitive avionics on both new and legacy platforms. By Helen Haxell

Police missions across Europe are diverse and broad, with no operation the same as another. It is paramount for law enforcement teams to have agile, fast and robust platforms in order to ensure that police officers are on the scene quickly and are equipped to undertake the operation.

Twin-engine models – such as the Leonardo Helicopters AW169, Airbus Helicopters H145 and the Bell Helicopter 429 – are all competing to be the go-to for police operations in Europe, with all three having strong reach in this sector across the region.

As a law enforcement platform, the 429 covers the continent from Eastern Europe to Scandinavia. The Swedish National Police is the OEM’s largest parapublic operator, currently utilising seven of the type, the first of which entered service in May 2016.

Jakub Hoda, managing director for Europe and Russia at Bell Helicopter, told Helitech International Daily News that the 429 fleet stretches as far as Turkey, where it is part of the national police and forestry services’ portfolio of 22 helicopters used for parapublic

missions. The Slovakian police have also received two aircraft, although one was lost in a crash in May 2017.

Certified capability Hoda explained why the 429 is an appealing aircraft for law enforcement missions, highlighting multi-mission functionality and capacity as key factors. ‘It has more cabin space than any other light, twin helicopter in the market.

It has the flat floor and seating for seven passengers and one flight crew member,’ he said. ‘It’s a multipurpose, versatile helicopter – it’s ideal for patrol and tactical operations.’

The rotorcraft’s cabin volume is 5.8m³. In addition, the cabin can be reconfigured, which enables operators to organise their space according to the requirements of an operation. Furthermore, the platform features large 1.5m doors. Optional rear clamshell cabin doors slide aft, hugging the fuselage for operation in strong winds.

In terms of avionics, the Bell 429 is equipped with the BasiX-Pro integrated suite, which has two to three multi-function displays, a dual digital three-axis autopilot and an integrated electronic data recorder for situational awareness and post-flight analysis.

According to Hoda, the aircraft offers ‘a very good field of view’

as well as ‘performance, exceptional speed range and light capabilities’. In addition, the helicopter can be fitted with searchlights and a strong rappelling system with hoist capabilities of up to 272kg.

The Bell 429 was the first helicopter to be certified by the MSG-3 process, resulting in reduced maintenance costs for operators.

In relation to the wide scope of police missions across Europe, Hoda explained that one of the focuses for Bell has been on precise control at cruise and hover, for which the low vibration of the 429 is an asset.

Hoda is confident that the platform has a strong position in the market: ‘In the parapublic segment, we do believe the aircraft provides the same or better value than its competitors. We are competing quite heavily in the parapublic market with the Airbus H145, but [the 429

provides] a lower cost of operations.

‘So, I believe the customer can benefit [highly] in terms of the operational and maintenance cost than the 145,’ he said.

Building on experienceThe Airbus Helicopters H145, formerly known as the EC145 T2 and an evolution of the BK 117, is used in a law enforcement configuration across the world, from Canada to China. Serbia has ordered the M-version of the model.

In Europe, the H145 is in service with the German and UK police forces. There are now three German federal states that utilise the type for such activities.

In May 2017, for example, Airbus handed over one aircraft to the helicopter squadron of the Saxony-Anhalt state police. The example is equipped with a thermal imaging camera, an operator workstation with a connection to the police network, a searchlight and rappelling system, among other capabilities.

There is capacity for the squadron to take two more H145s, as it currently operates BK 117s, although at this time there is no known replacement date.

Airbus has been working with UK police forces for 30 years – the relationship started with an initial delivery of a Bö 105. Currently, the UK’s National Police Air Service utilises the EC145 and Northern Ireland’s police air support unit operates the H145 and EC145.

According to the OEM, Europe and North America are the key markets for the law enforcement sector. This is particularly true of Western Europe, in which the H145 and H135 comprise 50% of the segment’s twin-engine category.

The H145’s onboard Helionix avionics suite has an integrated four-axis autopilot and a mission management system (MMS). An Airbus Helicopters spokesperson confirmed to Helitech International Daily News that the MMS ‘offers the latest police tactical technology embedded in a most intuitive way into the aircraft and its avionics.

‘This ensures efficient workflows for the crew and 100% relevant information at their eyes and hands at any time. All of the components of the mission suite – like the EOS camera, the digital map system [and] the workstation – are networked, and even simultaneously link to the ground infrastructure work station.’

Production of the H145 currently takes place exclusively in Donaüworth, Germany, and at a full rate of six to seven aircraft per month.

Airbus is confident of the type’s position in the market, as confirmed by the spokesperson: ‘The H145 has no real direct competitor. The H145 is actually unique within its MTOW class, in terms of UL [upper limits]. The closest competition is the AW169, although with 1t more MTOW. The closest below our category and with significant UL is the Bell 429.’

The spokesperson explained that the aircraft can be equipped with ballistic protection, which was delivered to the German Armed Forces’ Special Forces Command and is possible in the civil configuration.

Optimistic introductionThree Leonardo Helicopters AW169s were ordered by the Norwegian police in August this year. Roberto Garavaglia, the company’s senior VP for strategy and development, told Helitech International Daily News that the type’s first public outing saw the aircraft sporting the traditional police colours of blue and yellow.

‘The police mission and the public security mission is at the core of the design of the 169. So, we are happy to see such sophisticated customers as Norway to be among the early customers,’ he noted.

‘We have also sold a first helicopter to Argentina in the police role and more will follow. We have had conversations with more police forces but I cannot be more specific [at this stage].’

Still relatively new to the market, the first prototype of the AW169 made its flight five years ago. The type received initial EASA certification in 2015 and then again a year later for an increased maximum gross weight of 4,800kg.

Garavaglia is optimistic about the law enforcement market.

‘The [civil] market clearly has not been great in the last few years. We started deliveries really in 2016 with the AW169, so we are still wrapping up...

‘We will see eventually how the market will respond – I think the market will be stimulated by new technologies, especially when these police forces have something different to look at. A lot depends on budgets but also on the evolution of mission requirements.’

General production of the model takes place at the Vergiate facility in Italy. Garavaglia explained that production levels are dependent on demand, but could be 40-50 aircraft per annum. In the last couple of years, more than 160 units in a variety of configurations have been ordered. The facility also delivers the AW139, AW189 and AW109 portfolio.

More than 40 AW169s have been delivered so far, and Leonardo confirmed in a statement that the fleet’s availability rate is over 95%.

One of the aircraft’s key features that can also benefit the EMS configuration is its wide doors, allowing for maximum accessibility. The helicopter can also be fitted with electromagnetic sensors to assist with intelligence, which is useful for missions conducted in an

urban environment. Garavaglia said that the type’s combined speed and endurance is an incentive for police operators.

‘Speed is a plus in the urban environment – as well as endurance – particularly when you are patrolling a specific area. The 169 is able to manage the rotor speed to reduce the noise emission when you are typically in the low to medium speed and loitering mode… So, you are not heard by [criminals], so they do not know that you’re approaching,’ he commented.

In relation to the aircraft’s positioning against its competitors, Garavaglia emphasised that the AW169 is a newer design: ‘[Other OEMs] have sold more units because of their longer history.’ However, he was adamant that the design of the Leonardo platform, in comparison with other models, will bring success, due to its more recent EASA certification.

‘The new avionics suite we have installed helps with the pilot workload. We are very busy integrating the latest GPS/GNSS light navigation capability, which makes the aircraft capable of flying out in dedicated IFR roles. Also, it has a very stringent required navigational performance, in terms of flight precision,’ he said.

Rapid responseGaravaglia commented further that with the terrorist threats facing Europe, there is a clear need to have the aircraft ready to protect and respond.

‘The 169’s two main capabilities in the law enforcement role are

intelligence gathering/signal gathering and observation, with its very sophisticated equipment dedicated to the police. Overall, the helicopter environment is pretty comfortable due to its size – police can wear their helmets inside and still have a lot of room.’

He said that the electronic intelligence of the rotorcraft can help to identify conversations which could be potentially dangerous, and the capability to transfer real-time data to the ground station and receive immediate feedback helps to make the helicopter an ‘information hub’ for police forces in the sky and on the ground.

What is evident from this range of helicopters – whether new to the market or an evolution of an older model – is that each is unique in what they offer to the law enforcement community within Europe.

The main emphasis is on a spacious cabin and the integration of a smart, intuitive avionics suite that can communicate with the ground support team, in order to ensure rapid response and effective mission execution by police forces. ■

Very important progress

The VIP sector is offering encouraging signs of life for the commercial helicopter market, according to industry participants. By Gerrard Cowan

In an otherwise discouraging market – marked by the much-discussed oil and price collapse in 2014 – the corporate sector is providing OEMs with hope for the steady recovery of business.

While there has not been a great surge of growth in this segment overall, there has been strong demand in several sectors, said Jason Kmiecik, acting president of HeliValue$, an appraiser of new and used helicopters.

He explained that there has been good demand for medium-sized helicopters that are less than six or seven years old with a low total of flight hours – buyers are willing to pay relatively high prices for these platforms.

In addition, single-engine, smaller aircraft are also trading particularly well for corporate applications, with a good market for platforms up to ten years old, Kmiecik confirmed. ‘However, the guys with more money want newer machines,’ he added.

Steady successFrom the perspective of an OEM, the VIP market is in good standing, with respectable growth over the past few years for aircraft weighing 4,500kg or more, said Nathalie Previte, VP for strategy and business development in Sikorsky’s commercial and international military arm.

‘This improved market has been most apparent in international VIP and corporate sales,’ she added. ‘In the next five to ten years, we anticipate continued steady growth in the VIP market, particularly in regions outside of the US.’

The S-76D has been a major contributor to sales in this segment for Sikorsky, with numerous orders placed this year. Previte asserted that the OEM has had ‘significant interest in all regions of the world for our commercial products for the VIP market segment’.

Despite some well-known difficulties that have impacted the

global industry – namely in the oil and gas sector – there has been some recovery, said Manuela Barbarossa, VIP helicopter market specialist at Leonardo Helicopters.

‘A modern, safe helicopter is a time saver and force multiplier when used on business,’ she said. ‘You can comfortably fly anywhere in any weather conditions, using mission planning software to meet your specific flight requirement, and get whatever you need on board, from entertainment to flying office tools and equipment. You can also plan maintenance more efficiently, in order to maximise availability and effectiveness.’

Barbarossa said customisation is key to success in this market – Leonardo provides highly tailored solutions in areas ranging from ‘interior layout and equipment to external livery and paint schemes’.

In terms of individual markets, Barbarossa said that while Europe remains very important for the company, it has seen good

signs in Latin America, particularly for the AW169. Asia and the Middle East are also significant, she added, where the company has received good feedback on its solutions.

Barbarossa believes it is crucial that investments in infrastructure and the development of new regulations are promoted in emerging markets, ‘in order to

maximise the benefits of vertical lift in terms of service quality, effectiveness, safety and affordability’.

Market positioningThe corporate/VIP market remains challenging, in the view of Airbus Helicopters, although recovery is expected from next year, mainly due to fleet renewals in Europe and North America and new growth in Asia. Despite the prolonged downturn, the company saw a 1% increase in private and business aviation (PBA) sales in 2016.

Furthermore, Airbus has sought to further develop its interests in the sector with the launch of Airbus Corporate Helicopters (ACH), which specifically targets this market and is aligned with Airbus Corporate Jets.

ACH has three major product lines: ACH Line, the standard VIP and corporate offering; ACH Exclusive, which offers a high level of customisation and craftsmanship; and ACH Editions, which includes fittings developed by partnering luxury designers

and brands, such as Mercedes-Benz, among others.

Airbus is displaying an H125 at Helitech International this year, as well as the H135 Helionix, which the company is positioning as a key product for the PBA market.

Chuck Evans, director of marketing at Bell Helicopter, pointed to data that shows there were fewer deliveries in 2015 and 2016 than in previous years in the VIP/corporate segment. ‘The delivery trend since 2010 is pretty

similar for all regions, growing in 2013 and shrinking in 2015 and 2016,’ he said. ‘If there is any one region that deviates from the trend, it is China, which has been more stable than others. However, China is a rapidly growing market within all segments of the industry.’

That said, the coming years will likely be positive for Bell in the VIP sector, judging by the response that it has received for its 505 model, according to Evans.

‘Based on our response for the Bell 505, we think the next few years will be very strong for the corporate/VIP market as a whole.’

The company is looking to leverage the strong networking potential of Helitech International, particularly with regards to the VIP/corporate market on the continent, Evans added. ‘It’s a very good opportunity for us to meet and interact with current and potential European customers,’ he said. ■

UK-based company Cobham is focused on the modularity of its technology, offering users the advantages of using multiple radio spectrums and continuous upgrades. By Beth Stevenson

STAND J28

A new development has come from Cobham, which has introduced what it describes as a new architecture to support communications, dubbed RT-7000, which the company has been working on for a number of years.

‘This work has resulted in a new approach to the markets served,’ John Payne, GM of Cobham Aerospace Solutions, told Helitech International Daily News. ‘Unlike our legacy radios and those of our competitors, our engineers did not just design a “point solution” voice radio for airborne law enforcement and HEMS.’

Instead, a new architecture was developed, to which Cobham will add products and leverage legacy avionics systems that it has previously provided to customers. The first release of this new architecture is the RT-7000 Panel Mount Radio (RT7000PMR), a software-defined radio (SDR) that allows for voice communications.

‘The RT-7000 architecture is modular, which means that various product releases will house different modules for different missions. The

RT7000PMR covers the entire parapublic voice radio spectrum in a single transceiver,’ Payne said.

The company claims that its product is the only COTS radio with this capability, and it is working with Motorola Solutions to incorporate its technology into the RT7000PMR.

‘This lets public safety users have the features they need to respond to any situation,’ Payne said.

Planning aheadFuture modules are planned that will leverage networks such as FirstNet LTE, Iridium, HF, TETRA and Inmarsat, and if an RT7000PMR is acquired now, new modules can be acquired as they are released in the future.

‘This protects today’s hardware investment by allowing features to be added as needs change,’ Payne said.

Cobham’s larger legacy RT-5000 system can be upgraded to the RT-7000 standard. The first three of its four current customers took this option, while the fourth contract was won through a competition.

‘These users will save size, weight and power with RT-7000 – precious commodities on most aircraft,’ Payne noted.

The launch customer for the RT-7000 was the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), which is replacing the RT-5000 currently in service on its fleet of 14 Airbus Helicopters AS350 B2s and five Bell JetRangers, plus one fixed-wing King Air.

The first system has been delivered, Payne said, with a second unit about to be shipped to the department for integration on another helicopter. The rest of the customers remain undisclosed.

In addition to the LAPD, users of the RT-5000 that could upgrade to the RT-7000 include: the US Army on its UH-72A Light Utility Helicopter; US Customs and Border Protection; the US Coast Guard (USCG); the FBI; the LA Fire Department; the federal police and customs of Brazil; the police in São Paulo, Brazil; the national police of Colombia; and the air force of Colombia.

Payne said that Cobham is currently developing a specialised receiver for the USCG, utilising the SDR element of the new system to provide the ability to monitor maritime distress signals. It uses almost all of the SDR backbone of the RT7000PMR, he said, and monitors several signal types to allow for quick deployment by the coast guard.

‘SDR reuse is allowing us to lower development costs and shorten lead times,’ Payne added.

Interoperability ideaIn addition to the new planned modules, Cobham will also use the RT-7000 architecture for its next-generation communication and navigation radios. ‘We will reuse the SDR everywhere it makes sense,’ Payne said.

He claims that the two radios are the only ones available that

can talk on every Federal Emergency Management Agency interoperability channel – including VHF low-band – while also interoperating on military and public utility radio frequency bands.

‘Whether responding to a flood, fire, hurricane or tornado, Cobham radios will provide all the frequency coverage needed,’ Payne said. ‘With RT-7000 and RT-5000, operators can be prepared for the unexpected.’

Staying connectedHelicopters therefore remain a difficult platform to connect to ground infrastructure, but a change in direction is seemingly under way.

The introduction of robust beyond-line-of-sight communications will help this, as will removing some of the burden on the pilot by adding more autonomy into the cockpit.

However, a number of the developments being made are some years away from reaching fruition, so the challenges rotorcraft face in communicating with the required ground infrastructure seem set to remain for the near future. ■For an expanded version of this feature, please see RotorHub Jun/Jul 2017.
