After the French failure to colonize Texas. 1690-1693
The Spanish were worried about an aggressive French colonial policy and began to establish missions in East Texas. This did not work out so good.
The Massacre at Mission San Saba
New Missions are successful!
In 1716 new missions were started north of the Rio Grande River. Spanish priests hoped to civilize the native peoples by converting them to the Catholic faith and teaching them European skills and farming.
Ranching and Farming Native Americans raised longhorns and built aqueducts to irrigate crops.
Native Americans learned stonework and built large mission complexes.
But life on the Spanish frontier could be harsh and dangerous!
End of the Spanish Missions
The missions by the early 1800’s could no longer protect the Native Americans against ranchers and other business people. The new Mexican Republic secularized all missions in Texas by 1830.
Conclusion:
The Spanish missions helped open up Texas for European colonization by bringing their culture and skills to the new land.
