Another Open Letter to PLU Students:

We are a group of involved, committed and concerned student leaders seeking to share our personal opinionsas individuals. We work every day to make PLU a safer, more affirming and inclusive place to live and learn.We wrote the previously published letter1 with the intention of speaking on behalf of a group of students, ourLGBTQ friends and family, who expressed that they were deeply offended and upset about some dialoguehappening in the ASPLU executive elections. These students didn’t feel like they had a voice – so our truestintention was to give voice to students that we felt were being mistreated and ignored.

Our intention was never to endorse nor malign either candidate. We value and admire Thomas’ commitmentto his values and believe that every student has a right to their own personal beliefs. We fear that theintention of our letter was mistaken as an attack. We apologize to those who interpreted our previous letteras such.

However, we stand firm in our commitment to an open and affirming campus. We encourage you to considerwhat you believe to be best for all students in our community.

As student leaders, we are excited about the amount of attention and dialogue that this issue and letter haveencouraged. On the other hand, we are upset at the direction the dialogue has taken. We, as a community,have lost focus on the issue at hand – the way in which we treat our LGBTQ family and friends. That is whatcaused us to write a letter in the first place and remains to be our primary concern. In the heated dialoguethat has ensued, no one has addressed the true content of our concerns.

To clarify, our intention was never to malign a single person nor attack anyone’s personal beliefs. Rather, ourintention was, and is, to speak up for our LGBTQ students. We encourage your continued participation in thecommunity and the upcoming election and we urge you to consider the implications of your words and yourvote.

Gender Neutral Housing Application From the Office of Residential Life In response to a joint proposal passed by ASPLU and the Residence Hall Association, Residential Life is creating two residence hall mixed gender wings with gender neutral bathrooms as a pilot program for the 2013 – 2014 academic year. These bathrooms will be open to all users, regardless of biological sex or gender identity. Private stalls, with partitions going nearly to the floor and ceiling, will enclose toilets, urinals, and showers with individual changing areas. These wings will be designated as mixed gender, allowing for rooms designated for male residents and rooms designated for female residents on the same wing. Gender neutral rooms will be an option on these wings for students for whom biological sex does not match gender identity. We believe that ALL Students deserve a space to live on campus that is safe, affirming, and inclusive

We support our LGBTQ friends who might not feel comfortable in traditional housing

We surveyed students back in October of 2012, and they overwhelmingly supported increasing the number of mixed-gender wings on campus

We heard consistent support from students regarding these changes through open Residence Hall Congress sessions twice this year

We believe in the on-campus experience and want every student to have a chance to live it!

opportunity to enrich their sports skills by participating in safe, positive and non-competitive programs and camps. Over 30 years of experience have helped to build a menu of programs as varied as our young athletes. From Traditional Summer Programs to Year-Round athletics and Tournaments, Skyhawks offers it all.

JOB DESCRIPTION: Directors and Coaches positions are available both for week-long half-day programs and

week-long full-day programs. Skyhawks assigns staff on a weekly basis and those that meet expectations will work on a consistent basis. Staffing is based on a number of factors including number of sports staff can teach, flexibility in driving to different locations, and how well the staff are currently doing their job.

JOB REQUIREMENTS: Skyhawks is looking for sports-oriented individuals who are highly-motivated,

energetic people who enjoy working with children. Skyhawks requires staff to attend 2-3 training sessions. Trainings will be held in the evenings and weekends in early June. Skyhawks requires Directors to be First Aid and CPR certified and Coaches to be First Aid Certified by the time you work your first camp. Coaches must have reliable transportation and access to a computer. Staff must be at least 18 years old by June 1st.

SUMMER PROGRAM HOURS AND PAY: Program times are typically 9am-Noon, 1pm-4pm or 9am-3pm

Monday - Friday or Monday - Thursday. Evening hours are also available. Skyhawks summer programs start the week of June 17 and end the week of August 26. Pay range is between $9.19/hour to $12/hour based on school level and experience. Winter, spring and summer internship opportunities are also available.

Study the economics of European integration in Europe this summer. Students will visit Sweden, Hungary, Germany, Italy, and France, meeting with students, policy makers and citizen’s groups, and use economic theory to assess the European project from multiple national per-spectives. Program highlights include:

Discuss the European debt crisis in Stockholm with PLU economics alumnus Filip Weintraub, one of Europe’s most successful investment advisers. Study EU energy policy and Germany’s Feed-In Tariff system for wind and solar power in the Ruhr, home to the largest installed solar capacity in the world. Meet with farmers, agriculture specialists, and consumers in Paris to discuss and assess the distributional consequences of EU’s Common Agricultural Policy. Work with Italian Landscape Exploration to help build local ecotourism capacity in Italy’s Gran Sasso National Park under a grant program from the EU’s regional solidarity policy.

This is a 4-week summer language course that includes Spanish language classes four hours a day, Monday to Friday. It is located at the University of Leon, in the region of Castilla-Leon. The city, about four hours by bus to the north and west of Madrid, is a prosperous provincial capital and lively university town. It is famous for its rich history and many monuments dating from Ro-man times. Program highlights:

The program includes housing with a host family, host family meals, and supplemental study abroad insurance. Students will have the opportunity to enjoy cultural activities related to the city and the

region. Students will get a taste of the pilgrims’ experience through “El Camino de Santiago”

(“The Way”) This program includes several same-day excursions.

ANTH 465 Archaeology: The Field Experience teaches students basic ar-chaeological field methods on-site in the San Juan Islands off the coast of Washington. The course emphasizes excavation skills, record-keeping, field mapping, and photography. Program highlights include:

Join an archaeological dig on the San Juan Islands. Learn excavation skills. Camp in a beautiful rural setting just off the Washington Coast.
