A large number of Party men drawn from different parts of Akhnoor and Jourian attended the function. The BJP leaders who paid tributes to martyrs included Party State president & MLA, Sat Sharma its Legislative Party leader & Former Deputy CM, Dr. Nirmal Singh, MPs Jugal Kishore Sharma and Shamsher Singh Manhas, MLAs Ravinder Raina, Rajeev Sharma and Dr. Krishan Lal Bhagat, MLCs Ramesh Arora and Vibodh Gupta, Kissan Board Vice Chairman Daljeet Singh Chib. They laid wreaths at the Shaheedi Sthal, a memorial con- structed in memory of seven Martyrs namely Mela Ram, Baryam Singh, Baldev Singh, Basant Ram, Nanak Chand, Trilok Singh and Sain Singh. They also hoisted National Flag amid singing of National Anthem. Later, these leaders paid their tributes in "Shradhanjali Sabha" at Jourian Bazar. Sat Sharma, while paying tributes, said that these martyrs laid down their lives for the com- plete integration of the State with the rest of the country and opposed the provision of separate flag, separate constitution and the provision of the post of Prime Minister. He said that the real tributes to them will be to take pledge to work for fulfilling the dreams of these great patriots. He informed the gathering that the Centre government has sanctioned Rs 206.90 crore for Jourian-Pargwal bridge over river Chenab and highlighted a number of schemes for the poor and needy. Dr. Nirmal Singh said that although we are paying tributes to these seven martyrs but in our State still people get martyrdom everyday as our soldiers, mem- bers of para-military forces, policemen and even civilians lay down their lives for the cause of the nation. He spoke on the ten month rule of PDP-BJP coalition and said that a number of path breaking decisions were taken with zero tolerance towards cor- ruption. "Amnesty scheme for electricity consumers, food safe- ty act, initiating of major devel- opmental projects in health, edu- cation, tourism sectors are few of them", said Dr. Nirmal Singh and added that package for PoJK refugees and provision of five marla plot at safer places for bor- der people are the results of the sincere efforts of coalition Government. Jugal Kishore Sharma, while announcing Rs ten lakh for face lift of the Shaheedi Sthal, high- lighted various Central schemes like Mudra Bank, Ladli Beti and enhancement of emoluments of SPOs, setting up of five Battalion of IRP and said that the pro- grammes and policies of Modi led Government are designed to benefit the youth, farmers, border people etc. Shamsher Singh Manhas said that while the country became independent in 1947 but our State become slave as its citizens did not enjoy the same freedom like other States. He said that today we feel pride of living in a democratic setup but credit for the same goes to these martyrs. He announced Rs ten lakh from MP LAD for further renovation of the Shaheedi Sthal. He also appealed the people to see them- selves the works undertaken by the previous coalition Government in the State and not get misled by the opposition par- ties propaganda. MLC Vibodh Gupta also announced Rs five lakh for the facelift of the Shaheedi Sthal. These leaders also visited Kissan Mela organized by Kissan Board with the involvements of various departments. The gathering was also addressed by Rajeev Sharma, Dr. Krishan Lal Bhagat, Ravinder Raina, Ramesh Arora, Vibodh Gupta, Daljeet Singh Chib, Manmohan Singh and Sat Pal Kakushah. One killed, two injured in mishaps Excelsior Correspondent KATHUA, Jan 31: One lady was killed while two children were injured in two road mishaps at Kathua and Samba district today. As per reports a lady was killed while her six year old girl was injured after the duo was hit by a matador at Ramkot falling under the Billawar Police Station. The woman was identified as Anju Devi, 30 W/o Sunil Kumar of Kandarloo Billawar while her daughter has been identified as six year old Parl Sharma. They were on their way from Nagrota Gujroo to their residence and after alighting from the matador at Ramkote they left for their village by foot. Meanwhile a matador that was returning from Sukrala Mata hit both mother and the child on the road. They were taken to Billawar Hospital where doctors declared the lady as brought dead while the girl after being given first aid was discharged late in the evening. The Ramkote Police has reg- istered a case under the relevant Sections of the law. The police has also arrested the matador driver who was identified as Rakesh Kumar and his vehicle bearing number JK02AG 7832 was also seized. He was taken to DH Samba where from doctors shifted him to GMC Jammu Free camp held at Kangrail HoD cautions women on heart diseases Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Jan 31: In a bid to reach out to the people living in the remote corners of Jammu district, Cardiology Department of Government Medical College and Super Speciality Hospital (GMC&SS) Jammu today held a day-long camp at Panchayat Ghar, Kangrail in Mishriwala area of Jammu city. Head, Department of Cardiology Dr. Sushil Sharma led a team of young and enterprising doctors which screened male as well as females, who had specially gathered to find out their whether or not they were living a heart healthy life. With focus on preven- tion of cardiac diseases in females both young and old, Dr. Sushil interacted with those being screened to apprise them about signs and symptoms of heart dis- eases in females. It is myth that most people, including women nurture that they are immune to heart diseases and heart attacks, said Dr. Sushil. He added that hormone oestrogen doesn't protect women from a sud- den heart attack and both men and women are prone to heart disease alike. He said that there has been 16-20 per cent growth in cardio- vascular diseases among women in the last five years and of this, 10-15 per cent growth in such diseases among women in the age group of 20-40 years-the category which was earlier considered protected from heart ailments. Dr. Sushil added that due to changes in lifestyle, not only have the risk factors for the cardiovascu- lar diseases like stress, smoking and drinking increased consider- ably, but co-morbid conditions like obesity, hypertension and diabetes have also gone up. "Women often overlook symptoms and discom- fort pertaining to heart diseases, and rarely consult an expert. Even if they opt for consultation, more often than not, they discontinue the treatment as soon as they get symptomatic relief. The compli- ance rate is comparatively poor among women," said Dr. Sushil. He maintained that since work- ing women juggle home and work responsibilities, they are more like- ly to get exposed to stress and unhealthy lifestyle and, therefore, may be more prone to cardiovascu- lar diseases as compared to non- working women. The need is to encourage women to go for a heart health check-up and accompany her to one, said Dr. Sushil. He spelled out that like males, in females; High blood pressure or hypertension is a silent disease. If left untreated, it makes the heart work harder, speeds up hardening of the arteries, and increases the risk of heart attack, stroke, and kidney failure. "Women who have a histo- ry of high blood pressure and over- weight women with high blood pressure are also at greater risk. Although high blood pressure can- not be cured, it can be controlled with diet, exercise, and, if necessary, medicines," added Dr. Sushil. The team of doctors which assisted Dr. Sushil included Dr. Mohi Kalsotra, Dr. Dhaneshwar Kapoor and Dr. Anitipal Singh. Manohar Lal conducts tour of Billawar areas Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Jan 31: Former Minister and senior Congress leader Dr Manohar Lal Sharma conducted an extensive tour of the far- flung areas of Billawar constituency and took stock of the problems being faced by people. During his tour, the Congress leader paid visit to Bathar, Juthana, Malindi, Nallau, Najot, Dhralta, Morian, Koug, Marduin, Tilla, Dhed, Bhaddu and Kishenpur Dungara and interacted with the local people, Panchs and Sarpanchs besides prominent leaders of the area. He came to know about the problems faced by the people of the areas. The public apprised Dr Sharma about the condition of roads, water supply schemes and power crisis being faced by them. Shiv Sena for dissolution of Assembly Main road in Kupwara in shambles. -Excelsior/Aabid Nabi Road in Kupwara Town in shambles Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Jan 31: The road in the main Town of North Kashmir's Kupwara district is in shambles and has developed potholes even as it was macadamised last year in the month December. Local residents said the black topping of the road lead- ing to Sopore in Kupwara was done in December. "However if seen today it seems the black- topping was done decades ago because of potholes. Either the material was substandard or the work was not done as stan- dards," said a local. He said not only the road in Main Town is in shambles but Kupwara -Kalaroos road is also in bad condition. "The other link roads like Sarkuli-Parraypora is also in poor condition," he added. The residents appealed the concerned authorities to imme- diately repair the roads with quality material. "If the work is not done as per standard then the roads would present the same picture. The concerned authori- ties should utilize the money in right direction," said the resi- dents. Dr SK Bali, HoD Nephrology, was the chief guest on the occasion while Makhan Singh (Retd Deputy SP), was the guest of honour. During the day-long camp renowned doctors of the State examined over 500 patients. SBM trainers’ plea to Guv for release of pending dues Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Jan 31: Sakshar Bharat Mission (SBM) trainers have appealed to the Governor NN Vohra for release of wages, which are pending for the past three years. According to ZA Wani, State Organiser, Jammu and Kashmir Sakshar Bharat Mission (SBM) Preraks Forum, the SBM trainers are in dire financial crisis in the absence of the pending honorarium. “We are delivering our servic- es at different schools across the State, but the concerned authori- ties have not paid us our dues for the past three years, which has lead to starvation”, he added. Concerned authorities have pushed our future towards dark- ness as they don’t frame any policy for our job security and are ignor- ing the guidelines of the scheme, he said, adding that “Around 6000 SBM trainers are working under this Centrally sponsored scheme, but unfortunately we are not get- ting pending wages”. “No doubt the Central Government has launched the programme in the State to gener- ate the employment for qualified youths and to make the Jammu and Kashmir literate, but the con- cerned authorities are still unable to implement the programme in letter and sprit”, he added. On behalf of SBM trainers, Wani appealed to the Governor to intervene into the matter and resolve the issue of pending wages at the earliest. Dr Gautam takes over as IDA president Excelsior Correspondent JAMMU, Jan 31: Dr Gautam Sharma today took over the charge of president of the Indian Dental Association (IDA), Jammu. He took over the post in the well attended annual general meeting of the IDA. Dr Sharma is dental sur- geon in the University of Jammu and was instrumental in setting up the IDA here. Dr Sharma did BDS from Himachal Pradesh before join- ing the profession in J&K. He participated in several National and International level dental conferences in various parts of the country. Traders call for protest, shutdown Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Jan 31: A fac- tion of Kashmir Traders and Manufacturers Federation (KTMF) has called for protest tomorrow and shutdown on Tuesday against the State Government's reported proposal of not providing financial com- pensation to flood-affected traders. Acting president of KTMF, Bashir Ahmad Rather, said the traders would hold a 2-hour long protest tomorrow in city centre Lal Chowk and then would march towards Raj Bhavan. "At Raj Bhavan we will present a memorandum," he said. "We were assured by the late Chief Minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed that the traders will be compensated on priority basis but unfortunately he passed away," he said, adding: "we have come to know that the Government is now planning not to compensate us and the protest is against the reported move. Warning Government of dire consequences, he said a shutdown on the call of KTMF would be observed on Tuesday across the Valley and demanded immediate financial rehabilita- tion of the traders. Excelsior Correspondent SRINAGAR, Jan 31: Two persons were injured in Lolab area of north Kashmir's Kupwara district after violent stone-throwing clashes erupted between locals and security forces over the killing of three Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants gunned down yesterday. The clashes erupted soon after the funeral-in-absentia for two militants as locals resorted to massive stone-pelting on Lalpora police station. The resi- dents of Dardpora and Lalpora areas offered the absentia funer- al at Jindyal village as police didn't handover bodies of two militants to them. Soon after the funeral, hun- dreds of residents clashed with security forces during which police used teargas shells. Two persons identified as Javaid Ahmad and Bilal Teli were injured. The clashes later subsi- dized and situation eased. Meanwhile, three teenagers were detained by police from Sazgaripora locality of Hawal in downtown here on the charges of stone-pelting. The youths were detained for taking part in frequent stone-throwing protests in Old City localities, said an official. Youth held for thefts Excelsior Correspondent MENDHAR, Jan 31: The police arrested an alleged thief and recovered four ATMs from his possession besides some stolen money. A police spokesman said that during mid night, a police patrol from Mendhar Police Station noticed one person at the ATM near local mosque. The police- men were observing his activities from a distance. They captured the man and during questioning and his frisking, four ATM cards were recovered from his posses- sion besides some currency. He admitted his involvement in some theft cases. Identified as Abdul Zabar, son of Mohd Kushal, the police registered a case against him and started investigation. As per police sources, an employee of Medical Department namely Dev Raj (50), son of Chandan Ram of village Jaganoo received seri- ous injuries die to fall from tree. Army’s career counseling prog at GDC Sarh Bagga Excelsior Correspondent REASI, Jan 31: Army's Rashtriya Rifles Unit, located in Mahore area of district Reasi organised a youth career coun- seling and guidance programme at Govt Degree College, Sarh Bagga on Saturday. Two injured in Lolab clashes Free medical camp organized Driver held with poppy straw Excelsior Correspondent REASI, Jan 31: Police arrested a driver along with 2.500 kilograms poppy straw. As per police sources, on spe- cific information, police team intercepted an Indica car bearing registration number JK20-0851. During checking, police recovered 2.500 kilograms of poppy straw and arrested the driver, who has been identified as Mohammad Saleem, son of Nazir Ahmed of Sirla Bhaga, District Reasi. A case under FIR Number 17/16 under Section 8/15 NDPS Act has been registered at police station Katra and investi- gation started. Head, Department ofCardiology Dr. Sushil Sharma leda team of young and enterprisingdoctors which screened male aswell as females, who had speciallygathered to find out their whetheror not they were living a hearthealthy life. With focus on preven-tion of cardiac diseases in femalesboth young and old, Dr. Sushilinteracted with those beingscreened to apprise them aboutsigns and symptoms of heart dis-eases in females.
It is myth that most people,including women nurture that theyare immune to heart diseases andheart attacks, said Dr. Sushil. Headded that hormone oestrogendoesn't protect women from a sud-den heart attack and both men andwomen are prone to heart diseasealike. He said that there has been16-20 per cent growth in cardio-vascular diseases among women inthe last five years and of this, 10-15per cent growth in such diseasesamong women in the age group of20-40 years-the category whichwas earlier considered protectedfrom heart ailments.
Dr. Sushil added that due tochanges in lifestyle, not only havethe risk factors for the cardiovascu-
lar diseases like stress, smokingand drinking increased consider-ably, but co-morbid conditions likeobesity, hypertension and diabeteshave also gone up. "Women oftenoverlook symptoms and discom-fort pertaining to heart diseases,and rarely consult an expert. Evenif they opt for consultation, moreoften than not, they discontinue thetreatment as soon as they getsymptomatic relief. The compli-ance rate is comparatively pooramong women," said Dr. Sushil.
He maintained that since work-ing women juggle home and workresponsibilities, they are more like-ly to get exposed to stress andunhealthy lifestyle and, therefore,may be more prone to cardiovascu-lar diseases as compared to non-working women. The need is toencourage women to go for a hearthealth check-up and accompanyher to one, said Dr. Sushil.
He spelled out that like males, infemales; High blood pressure orhypertension is a silent disease. Ifleft untreated, it makes the heartwork harder, speeds up hardeningof the arteries, and increases the riskof heart attack, stroke, and kidneyfailure. "Women who have a histo-ry of high blood pressure and over-weight women with high bloodpressure are also at greater risk.Although high blood pressure can-not be cured, it can be controlledwith diet, exercise, and, if necessary,medicines," added Dr. Sushil.

Acting president of KTMF,Bashir Ahmad Rather, said thetraders would hold a 2-hourlong protest tomorrow in citycentre Lal Chowk and thenwould march towards RajBhavan. "At Raj Bhavan wewill present a memorandum,"he said.

SRINAGAR, Jan 31: Twopersons were injured in Lolabarea of north Kashmir'sKupwara district after violentstone-throwing clashes eruptedbetween locals and securityforces over the killing of threeLashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militantsgunned down yesterday.
