Lindsay and I are both early morning people, and we usually set our radio alarm for 6.30am, so that we can spend half an hour listening to the news before getting on with our day. Last Monday morning,

therefore, made for interesting listening. The 6.30 headlines were, firstly,

about plans to close the Calais refugee camp, and secondly, the meeting of heads of the worldwide Anglican Communion. At 6.45am, however, there was a newsflash to announce the death on Sunday of David Bowie, following his eighteen month battle with cancer.

Next up was an interview with Justin Wellbye, the Archbishop of Canterbury, about the future of the Anglican Communion. “Before we begin,” said the presenter, “what are your thoughts on David Bowie?”

By 7.00am, the headlines had changed, with David Bowie top of the list. These headlines were followed by a report from Calais, which had to be cut short. The reporter had clearly put in a lot of work and was expecting to be given a longer slot. “Sorry we have to stop you,” said the presenter. “You may not have heard, but David Bowie has died.”

At the time, we couldn’t help but wonder – if this is how Radio 4’s

flagship news programme is dealing with this, what is the mainstream media going to be like? Sure enough, for the rest of the day David Bowie’s life and achievements were given wall to wall coverage.

Don’t get me wrong. The vinyl collection in my attic includes four of Bowie’s first five albums, and over the years I have both enjoyed and admired his musical genius and artistic creativity. But, at the same time, I know that there were sides to Bowie’s character that I didn’t admire, and I would not have recommended him to anyone as a role model.

All this has caused me to reflect on what this says about our society today, and its relentless capacity to idolise.

The biblical definition of an idol is that it is something ‘man-made’ and attractive, but ultimately false, and which draws us away from God.

If you’ve been one of the millions of people who have viewed Bowie’s final album, ‘Dark Star’, which was released two days before his death, you may well have been given even more reason to wonder about the motives behind it.

Although already acclaimed as a masterpiece, it is hardly reassuring on the theme of dying. It does, however, appear to be a deliberate

A belated Happy New Year to you! We had a lovely end to 2015 with our Nativity service. Each Sunday Club wrote one of the scenes of the story and I was so impressed with their creativity and humour! Also, we tried something new at Gracemount Primary for a Christmas assem-bly. Instead of myself and other chaplains visiting the school, we hosted the entire primary at Liberton Kirk and did a special Christmas assembly there! This included Christmas songs, a game, a dramatised Nativity with pupils from each year group, and a message from John Young. Hopefully we can continue this tradition in coming years! In January, we started an all-church series on the Fruit of the Spirit, which the children are loving as they "investigate" each fruit with an exciting curriculum. And we are well underway planning our Youth Service on March 20, which will involve hundreds of children in the uniform organisations preparing for it in the coming weeks. Thanks for your support and prayers of what we are doing with children in the church and the area - God is at work!

attempt by him to lay a claim to the notion of ‘Bowie the god’ – someone who, even in death, would welcome our worship.

By now David Bowie will have met with his maker, and will have had to

look back on his life in the clear light of God’s truth.

But what about us? Who and what do we worship, and where does God come on our list?

Much love

I'm sure everyone will have become aware of the Together Again request to review our level of giving. The seed was sown by the Kirk Session last June when it was decided that we had to address the potential deficit of £22,000 anticipated for 2015.Over the summer, within the Orders of Service, we reminded the congregation of all the good things that happen in Liberton Kirk and the Kirk Centre, contributing greatly to the life of our church, the lives of our church family and to the community, with our presence. This vibrant and supporting church of ours needs our offerings as does the wider Church of Scotland to meet the cost of Ministry and the good work it carries out on our behalf. Yet our income continues to fall short of our expenditure because of rising costs. It is difficult to reduce

Page 5: Daily Devotions - WordPress.com · Daily Devotions ‘Our aim is to draw closer to God and to each other, so that, through us, He can make known to all people the joys and challenges

February 2016 Page 5

expenditure, and this is why we would have a deficit - hence

Friday 6th November was a day of Fasting, Prayer and then in the evening, the Breaking of our Fast. Our Fast (e.g. foregoing food, if able to do so, TV or even Social Media!) was help to us to focus on the reasons for our prayer. We also created a Prayer Path within the church, where the prayer stations focused on all of the above. Saturday 7th was the day to return the completed Giving Forms which had been enclosed in the new Guide to Giving. Even before and since then, they continue to be returned to Eric Brown. Not only had we asked members and supporters to review their level of giving, we invited everyone to tithe by giving a tenth of either gross or net income back God through the church. The history of tithing within Liberton and paragraphs from The Bible were covered in a prayer station, the contents of which will be shared in issues of the Magazine this year.

The Kirk Session wishes to thank everyone who has taken time to focus on why we need to see an increase in the overall level of giving, to thank you for your prayers and your decision to continue with your present level of giving, to increase it and to tithe.Remembering that a deficit of £22,000 was our worry, we are very grateful for the single donations totalling £7,250 received up to the end of December, which will help reduce the deficit. The remaining shortfall will have to be met from reserves.

Thank you, Grant Cook, Finance Convener

When you come to church you hear hymns. Hymns are songs of praise to God. Some are very old and some, like the ones you may sing at school, are new. Have you ever wondered who wrote the hymns we sing? For example, one hymn writer was Mrs Cecil Frances Alexander, the wife of the Bishop of Londonderry. She wrote a book called ‘Hymns for Little Children’ which was dedicated to her godchildren. The book was published in 1848 and contained hymns that we know well today; ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’, ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ and ‘There is a Green Hill Far Away’. It is said that she wrote the last hymn because of the view from the Bishop’s palace. The house looked out over the city walls to the green hills in the distance. So the words we sing today come from the view that Mrs Alexander had from her window.

Well, she did say it was like nothing

on earth.

A wealth of material about Liberton Kirk’s history has been preserved in the National Records of Scotland in General Register House; for example, Kirk Session minutes dating from 1639 and cash books from 1755. However, you may not be aware that Liberton Kirk has its own collection of archives which are kept in the Wilson Hall. Some of this material was on display in the church during our Open Days in September. The Archive contains such gems as communion tokens dating from 1838 and books presented ‘for good conduct and regular attendance’ at the Parochial Sabbath School between 1880 and 1884, kindly donated by a member of the congregation. The question was raised at a recent Kirk Session meeting – How should we collect material relating to our church today to be preserved in the Archives for the future? The Kirk Session minutes are deposited in the National Records of Scotland as a matter of course, and every issue of the Kirk Magazine is sent to the National Library of Scotland; but what about the minutes from committees, leaflets, photographs and anything else concerning the life of Liberton Kirk today? This is not a plea for every member of a committee to print out all those minutes you’ve stored on your computer for the past 10 years or so, but if anyone has any minutes, leaflets or anything relating to the church and its congregation which you feel may be of interest could you think about passing them on to the Archive and bear this in mind for the future?Any material can be handed in to the Church Office for placing in the Archives or placed in the plastic box marked ‘Archives’ in the Offering House.

As we draw near to Lent, we are reminded of the revelation of God’s glory in Christ on the mount of transfiguration. The disciples misunderstood, thinking that this would be their final destination, but Jesus revealed himself as the Messiah, submitting himself to the passion and glory that is to come; the beginning of the end is in sight. Bicentenary year was wonderful! So many special events, so much to enjoy! We finished in style on Sunday13th Decem-ber by burying the time capsules in the church tower (see Edith’s information on

followed by a lovely piano recital from Calum, and a short Christmassy sing-song.

Some of the celebrations have cost money, others have covered costs, and some made a profit. Many people have contributed time, talents and money towards the programme. Amazingly at the end of all the year’s special events we ended up with a surplus of £1,100 to hand over to Tearfund.

This area has always had a connection with wells and water – we have the Balmwell in the grounds of the Toby Inn, there was a well in Springwood Park, and until very recently we had reservoirs and waterworks on Liberton Gardens. Because of this we thought it would be a good idea to give any surplus from our celebrations to a project which helped others to have the clean water we take for granted in this country, and the Tearfund project we are helping with is called “One Big Mountain”.

Over half a million people live in the Kabale District of South West Uganda. In a mountainous region where water is scarce the project highlights the lives of two girls aged 13 and 11 who make a two-hour round trip down the moun-tain twice a day to collect 20 litres of water each. That weighs about 20kg –the same as the luggage allowance on most airlines! The pathway is secluded and the girls are vulnerable to attack and rape. Tearfund works closely with the Kigezi Diocese, which has a Water and Sanitation Programme and a rainwater tank solution. They work through their local churches to unite communities to tackle poverty together. They teach about personal and community hygiene, challenge practices that lead to disease and help local people to identify the resources they have to improve their situation long-term. Practically they deliver materials to build water tanks and train

communities to construct them. The aim is that everybody in that region should have access to clean water within a walking distance of no more than 500 metres.

It’s good to know that we’ve been able to celebrate so well in 2015 and help this project at the same time. Well done!

Ruth Davies (Bicentenary Programme Co-ordinator, now retired!)

We closed our bicentenary year in December with the burial of a time capsule. Church records had indicated that a time capsule had been laid down in 1815 when the current church building was built, but despite extensive searching –with help from Edinburgh University – we have been unable to locate it. Whether it remains lost or has decomposed over the intervening 200 years we don't know. But since we were unable to mark our bicentenary by opening the original time capsule, we thought we would instead mark it by burying one of our own.

So that it will not be lost it has been placed under a specially marked flagstone in the base of the Church Tower and to guard as much as possible against decom-position we've used carefully chosen materials. Our capsule was a quality metal thermos flask, sealed in liquid latex (painted on as liquid in layers) It dries and sets into rubber. All the items placed in were printed on acid-free archive paper that is designed to last for up to 200 years (we hope it will), they were printed in black ink as colours may degrade more. The papers were only handled wearing gloves to prevent any acids or oils from human skin getting on to them. The capsule itself was then flooded with argon gas to push out any oxygen as things are more likely to decompose in oxygen. Argon is an inert gas so should not affect any of the capsule contents. It is also heavier than air so you can fill the thermos with it just as you could fill it with water and any air will float on top and be pushed out. The argon will not escape as long as the open flask is kept upright, so once the flask was closed and sealed in latex, the argon should stay inside and the oxygen stay outside.

There was a brief explanatory introduction by myself as compiler, some

pictures of the church, on its own, with congregation outside and of Willie and Mary (our Church Officer and his wife and assistant) trimming the creeper;

Short pieces written by John Young (our Minister), Rachel Willis (our children's worker), Anna Krabenhoft (our departing student youth worker), with pictures of Rachel and Anna; scanned copies of banners made up by the Sunday Club children on which they'd signed their names and written their dates of birth; short letters written by four of our “Crazy Crosses” (P7-S2 age group) along with pictures of the whole Crazy Crosses group)

A short piece written by our organist Calum Gubbie, complete with a picture of him and three pieces of sheet music he'd selected; a copy of the tune “Liberton Kirk” written for us by the Free Church Continuing; also pictures of our band and singers and the sheet music for one song chosen by each of them (so if any of you were worried about the lack earlier, a picture of John was featured then)

A magazine article about the cafe along with a picture of some of the cafe volunteers, and a short piece written by our Kirk Centre worker Linda Wright; a description of each of our House Groups, written by the members or leaders of that group (and in one case we got a picture too!); we got a written submission from the Guild along with some lovely pictures of the gathered members

we also had one from the World Mission Team, complete with pictures of the pupil we sponsor in Kenya, the Philomusica concert from Christmas 2014, the Watoto choir and some of our own children from their visit in June 2015, a Christmas Concert given by our partner Church in Malaysia, and Pope Francis's visit to the Waldensian Evangelical Church in Italy

Collected recollections from the Senior Citizens; and ,as a last minute impulse, a print out of the group reports run by our Kirk Roll keeper, listing all the different committees within the Church and their members.

Alongside all this there was another mini-capsule – a metal canister also filled with argon gas that held a Stage 'n' Slam T-Shirt signed by all the members of the Church's “Delta” Youth Club.

My hope is that in 200 years time, these capsules will be unearthed and carry an echo of this Christian family to our spiritual descendants. The world they are living in will no doubt be very different to the one we now inhabit, but God endures. Edith Barrowcliffe

Those of you who have been at Bruce Davies’ previous concerts in Liberton Kirk will know what a wonderful entertainer he is. Expect the best of music from Scotland and beyond when he makes a welcome return on 5th March.

Not only is he a faithful interpreter of the music of Scotland, he is also an award winning songwriter. He has performed in the United States and has a long list of radio and television credits, including Songs of Praise. His most recent recording is the first to feature all songs relating to his Christian faith. ‘I Have Found Peace – Songs of Faith & Forgiveness’ is a collection of songs guaranteed to entertain and inspire and will be available, along with his other currently available releases, at the concert.

Tickets, with a suggested donation of £8 to the Kirkgate Trust, will be available after services in February, or by contacting me on 664 6789.

We began a 'journey' in the Evening Worship in September by beginning a new series in the Church Cafe. We began at 6.30 pm as normal but were welcomed to the fragrance and taste of real coffee (or tea etc! ) and an informal atmos-phere of seats round small tables. Our theme was 'Reasons for Belief' where we explored some obstacles to becoming a Christian and then some of the reasons that persuade us. The more relaxed setting facilitated much good discussion, drew a few regular visitors, generated a 4 week mid week discussion group 'Agnostics Anonymous' and led to one new believer in the Christian Faith!Last Sunday we began a new series back in the church with the theme 'Encountering God'. Nikki Kirkland had prepared a feast for us of 3 corners around the church where in small groups we could use scripture in different ways to communicate with God. We also began to use a notebook/journal to jot down anything we felt God might be saying to us or questions we might want to explore. This will be something that we can add to and refer back to as the series develops. There will be notebooks available each Sunday evening. Do come and join us in our journey. A warm welcome is guaranteed !

The February Messy Church will be on Saturday 27th February from 4pm to 6pm in the church halls. Messy Church is especially for young families (with children of 0 – P7) – there are plenty of fun activities for the first hour, then there’s a time of worship with lots of songs and a story, and then a really nice meal together to finish.

If you know any young families whose Sundays are busy, then why not invite them to Messy Church on

Saturday once a month? It’s very informal – the only thing we’re strict about is that children must come with an adult, and adults must come with a child!

If you want to know more please get in touch – or better still find a young family who’s been to Messy Church and knows just how good it is!

One of the ways we get to know our Christian neighbours better is by joining with them in a series of studies through Lent. This year the course will take place in the 5 weeks from week beginning 15th February, and the subject will be “Prayer” as follows:

Week 1 Source of Life: Prayer as relationship. Week 2 Source of Joy: Prayer as enjoying God. Week 3 Source of Light: Prayer as listening. Week 4 Source of Wholeness: Prayer as honesty. Week 5 Source of Love: Prayer as care

There is a choice of 4 different groups:Monday evenings 7.30 (leader: Mark McHugh Pratt, host: George McDermid,

Longformacus Road)Tuesday afternoons 1.30 (leader/host: Cammy Mackenzie, Gilmerton Hub)Tuesday evenings 7.30 (leader/host: Rosemary Bayne, Mount Alvernia,

Lasswade Road)Wednesday afternoons 1.30 (leaders/hosts: David Dixon and Alice Anderson,

St Barnabas)Please think about joining one of these groups through Lent, and put your name and contact details on the form provided on the West Door Welcome Desk, or let me know. The latest issue of Crosstalk, the quarterly SEECAT newsletter, will be available in early February. Please pick up a copy from the welcome desks or the halls entrance and find out what is going on in our area.

Ruth Davies, SEECAT Chairman, 664 3608

The East Door side of the church has a new purpose . . . to be the quieter side and the place to go to have time out with God . . . to seek prayer support and encouragement after the 11am service and on other occasions . . . and to make continued use of the Prayer Tree for your prayers and requests. The West Door welcome table will have all sign up sheets available.

It’s now quite some time since I returned from Ukerewe, an island at the southern end of Lake Victoria, where I volunteered through Rotary. Although it looks tiny in your atlas it’s the size of Northern Ireland and has a population of 300,000.

I was helping in particular with improving the island pumped water supply and getting the sewerage system running in Ukerewe hospital, located in the island capital, Nansio, safely and effectively. We managed to completely renovate Ward 6 – new roof, toilets, showers, beds and bedding, mosquito nets, wiring and plumbing – the lot. You may recall that I sought your help to fill a 40 feet long shipping container with humanitarian equipment – and you responded marvellously.

You kindly donated loads of great equipment including about a dozen sewing machines and two wonderful domiciliary dental cabinets full of instru-ments. With the support of many organisations, I made a meaningful contri-bution to filling the container – I was fortunate also to collect a lot of mobility aids, wheelchairs and out of date medical equipment (e.g. bandages) as well as sets of textbooks, bicycles and just about every item of hardware you could mention.

Everything from joiners and mechanics tools to laptops. It was a wonderful experience to be able to gift, for example, a wheelchair to someone who otherwise crawled; and lightweight aluminium shoulder crutches to a man using the branch of a tree.

This first picture shows a sewing machine (donated by a Liberton member) being gifted to a secondary school head teacher, (seated) whose domestic science class (yes, they still call it that) of boys and girls will be taught to make clothes. This could be to enable them to start a business, or get a job, or it could be simply making clothes for their family and friends -but it will be

put to good use. The second picture is one of those wonderful mahogany visiting dentist ‘toolboxes’ being handed over to the senior dentist in the hospital where he is based. I’m sure you’ll work out which one is the dentist!

It was a privilege to be able to volunteer in Tanzania with Rotary, and with the support and generosity of the people of Liberton Kirk.

Many, many thanks. Alasdair Seale. Rotary Club of Braids

?This is an invitation to join a small team who, together with our Treasurer, will share the voluntary responsibilities of administering the finances of Liberton Kirk. We believe that there may be members of our church with accounting or book-keeping skills who may like to offer a little of their time and knowledge to help the church, perhaps for the first time. Or you may have recently ’retired’ from such a role and be willing to help. Although this idea is at an early stage, it would be helpful to hear from anyone interested in learning more. Disturb us, LordDisturb us, Lord, when we are too well pleased with ourselves,

When our dreams have come trueBecause we have dreamed too little,

When we arrived safelyBecause we sailed too close to the shore.

Disturb us, Lord, whenWith the abundance of things we possess

We have lost our thirstFor the waters of life;

Having fallen in love with life,We have ceased to dream of eternity

And in our efforts to build a new earth,We have allowed our visionOf the new Heaven to dim.

Disturb us, Lord, to dare more boldly,To venture on wider seas

Where storms will show your mastery;Where losing sight of land,

We shall find the stars. We ask You to push back

The horizons of our hopes; And to push into the future

In strength, courage, hope, and love.Attributed to Sir Francis Drake, 16th Century

It’s odd, really, that confessing one’s sins to God should ever have involved making pancakes. And yet the beginning of Lent brings us both – Shrove Tuesday is Pancake Day, and is followed by Ash Wednesday, and so Lent begins. In centuries gone by, the pancakes were made to use up the milk and eggs before the fasting of Lent. More recently, many readers will have childhood memories of the wonder of watching our mothers break an egg, mix it with milk and flour – and out of that gooey mess, to produce a light and delicious pancake. These days more and more of us buy pancake mix, or even ready-made pancakes. It seems we prefer the certainty of ending up with pancakes - to the risk of having made nothing BUT a mess of the kitchen.

Edith SteinDear Friends,Happy 2016! I hope that you all had a lovely Christmas and that you had some time to rest and recharge your batteries! I am praying that this new year will be a year that is filled with peace, joy, good health and a closer walk with Him.I love the beginning of a new year. I love the fact that we are walking into the unknown, yet we have the security that the one who knows all things is walking with us.I have now been back in Uganda almost 11weeks. It is so good to be back. I must confess however, that I have been surprised at how long it has taken me to settle back into life here! I had forgotten how noisy my neighbourhood is and how very hot it gets at this time of year!It has been lovely meeting up with many friends and also getting back out to the Islands. Everyone is rejoicing in all that God has done in my life. I am still amazed that I am back in Uganda. This time last year I was still recovering from my last Chemo session. God has been so faithful. I have been amazed and humbled at how many people here have been praying for me. One of the things that I have heard several times from folks is, “madam Kathleen, we didn't think we would ever see you again”.What a great opportunity it has been to share with many how

I think one of the highlights for me since returning has been that I have become a “Jja Jja” (a grandmother!).Many of you may remember a young boy called Godfrey who I led to the Lord many years ago when I worked up in Kuluva Hospital. He is now a grown man and has just become a daddy a few weeks ago. When I entered the ward to visit him and Helen, he said to me with a big beam on his face, “Kathleen you are now a Jja Jja”. She is just beautiful! Please pray for Godfrey, for Helen and the baby (they are still thinking of a name) that God would guard and protect this little family and provide for them. The other exciting thing that has happened is that I have been able to stay in my little house on the Islands. It has been so good to get back to ministry there and to begin settling into my wee home. I have managed to visit most camps over the past few months and meet with our pastors and Community Based Volunteers. The pastors have been doing great work. They have continued meeting every month for training. I have been able to chat with the pastors’ wives and talk with them about begin-ning discipleship classes with them and with some of the women from church. They are very enthusiastic about this and are desperate to begin as soon as possible! Please for the pastors and their wives and for

. Many things have changed since I left. Melanie has left Island minis-try and we now have a new Unit leader (Julie) and a new Regional Director (Joel) who are very new to what's going on in the islands. Please for them both that God would enable them to lead well. This week I was able to go back out to the Islands to visit a few camps. It was great to take Bill and David with me. Both men are from mychurch here in Kampala. These guys worked so hard painting theinside of my house for me. It looks so good! This now means that I can begin buying some furniture and curtains and making it home at last. Please that God will use this home to be a blessing to many.Next week I will be returning to UK for a few weeks to see the Oncologist (I will see him on Wednesday 13th January) and to also pack up my flat in Edinburgh. God willing if all goes well and there are no problems I will then be able to return to Uganda for another six months. Please that all will go well and that I will continue to stay healthy during the three weeks back in UK/Ireland. I really want to avoid all flu bugs and any other winter bugs that are doing the rounds!I do hope to see some of you during my time back. I will be visiting with my family in Ireland from the 18th - 24th January, but will be around for a few days after before traveling back to Uganda.Once again, I would like to say “Thank you” to each one of you for all your amazing love and support. You are a huge blessing in my life and I thank God for you. Much love
