BBO founder’s call:It’s time for time off

For more than 20 years, Fred Gitelman has been a regular – and regular winner – at NABCs. Now, he says, it’s time for a break.

The eight-time North American champion says he plans to sit out main events such as the Vanderbilt, Spingold and team trials for at least a year. He prefers to call his break a sabbatical rather than retirement. The Grand Life Master is a member of the Les Amoils squad in the Vanderbilt at this tournament.

The founder and president of Bridge Base Online says his responsibilities as BBO’s main programmer require a lot of time and hard work. Making BBO better and trying to keep up with commitments to

he won a world championship in 2010 as part of the John Diamond team – but that, too, is work.

“When I get home from a tournament,” he says, “I don’t feel relaxed and refreshed.”

Between tournaments, he says, he must find time to practice with his partner and work on systems. He and Brad Moss, also playing for Amoils, were a regular partnership for 15 years.

Gitelman, 48, moved to the U.S. from Toronto about 10 years ago. He and his wife, Sheri Winestock, now live in Las Vegas.

JUST FOR NEW PLAYERSCommon errors – and how

to avoid themBy Brent Manley

Failing to countFamiliar saying: There are three kinds of

bridge players – (1) Those who can count and (2) Those who can’t.

Bridge can be a mysterious game, and sometimes it seems impossible to find the right path. In many cases, however, it doesn’t have to be that way.

On virtually every deal, the bidding and play offer clues to the right line of play or defense. If you are paying attention, guesses can become certainties.

For example, say your contract depends on finding a queen when you have a two-way guess – with A 10 5 opposite K J 4. You can go either way, so you look for clues from the layout of the cards or from the high-card points the opponents have revealed.

Sometimes the opponents help you with their bidding. Say you are playing 6♥ after your left-hand opponent opens the bidding with 3♣, showing a seven-card suit. LHO takes the first trick with a high club and you ruff the second one. When you pull trumps, lefty shows out after two rounds. Now you know nine of his cards. You have to find the queen in a two-way guess, but you are lucky to be able to cash three winners in a third suit. When LHO follows to all three, you have a lock for the contract. You know that LHO has only one card – maybe none – in the key suit. With A 10 5

in dummy and K J 4 in your hand, all you have to do is cash dummy’s ace. If LHO does not follow with the queen, you can play low to your jack with complete confidence – all because you were counting the cards that the opponents played. Opener’s preempt made it easy for you.

Sometimes your counting exercise is more focused on high-card points.

You find yourself in a contract of 4♠ with these two hands on view

♠ A Q 9 8 7 ♥ Q 10 5 ♦ J 7 6 ♣ 7 3

♠ J 10 4 2 ♥ A K J 2 ♦ Q 5 4 ♣ A 9

This is the biddingWest North East SouthPass Pass Pass 1NTPass 2♥ Pass 2♠Pass 3NT Pass 4♠

West leads the ♦A, on which East plays the 10. The ♦K is next, 3 from East. West continues with the ♦2, a clear suit preference for clubs, and after East ruffs, he plays back the ♣Q. You win the ace as West signals with the ♣10. Now what?

If you can pick up trumps, dummy’s losing club can go on one of your high hearts. The normal play, in a vacuum, is to finesse against West for the ♠K. If you are counting, however, you know that play cannot work.

West has shown up with the ♦A K and, based on the play, also has the ♣K. If West has the ♠K,

that would give him 13 high-card points, enough to open the bidding – and he passed as dealer. You must hope that East started with a doubleton ♠K and that he is now down to a singleton. Your only hope, based on the count you have obtained, is to play a spade to dummy’s ace. If the king falls, you will have found your reward for paying attention. Even if it doesn’t, you will have the satisfaction of knowing you gave it your best shot.

Thinking bridgeBy Eddie Kantar

Extra chances in the play, preemptive bidding, safe exit cards.

Dlr: South ♠ 7 6 3 Vul: N-S ♥ Q 10 8 ♦ A Q 3 2 ♣ A Q J ♠ 10 9 8 ♠ A K Q 2 ♥ 3 2 ♥ 5 ♦ 10 8 7 6 5 ♦ K J 9 ♣ 10 8 4 ♣ K 9 7 6 5 ♠ J 5 4 ♥ A K J 9 7 6 4 ♦ 4 ♣ 3 2 West North East South 3♥ Pass 4♥ Dbl All Pass

Opening lead: ♠10. Bidding commentary: As South, you have a

maximum vulnerable preempt. As North, you have to decide between responding 3NT, gambling on the spade position, or raising to 4♥, exposing your A-Q combinations to an immediate attack from West. As it happens, the opponents can run only four spades, so 3NT would have been okay. As East, you have too much not to act over 4♥. Your double is for takeout. As West, even though partner’s double is for takeout, with a weak balanced hand, take your chances and pass.

Defensive commentary: As East, cash three spades and exit safely with a heart.

Play commentary: As South, after East exits with a trump, it appears that you have to guess which minor-suit finesse to take, fearing from the bidding that neither is going to work. However, you have an extra chance.

Play the ♦A and ruff a diamond. Return to dummy with a trump and ruff another diamond. If the ♦K appears (it does!), there is no need to take the club finesse. You can discard a club on the ♦Q. If the ♦K does not make a royal appearance, take the club finesse, but don’t hold your breath.

When missing two kings and having to decide which finesse to take, check to see if one of the suits includes a singleton (diamonds). If it does, try to ruff out the king of that suit. If that doesn’t work, take the finesse in the other suit (clubs).

Tell Me MoreThe Insider

We all know bridge is much more than a game. The Insider has observed many other games that bridge players play when not playing bridge (if a woodchuck could chuck wood).

The Daily Bulletin featured chess, a second favorite among bridge players. Then there are backgammon, poker, Go and other card games. But the really fun games are the ones with ever-changing rules and strategies.

The Insider has written about a popular game with the directors, Hide the Side Game, where they change the room and even the building where the side game is played every session. Escalator roulette is popular with the players. This is where the first player riding up or down stops three paces from the end of the escalator to read the Daily Bulletin cover-to-cover while less fortunate players pile up behind. Snack Bar tag is another. In this game, two players each offer to pay for the other’s coffee. Of course, neither reaches into their pocket for cash as the line for the register strings out longer than the one for the Gold Rush Pairs.

Yesterday morning, the Insider observed a new game–Bulletin Delivery Slalom. The goal of this game is to place as many inert bodies, suitcases, backpacks and scooters as possible between the elevator and the front door in order to force the Bulletin delivery boy to negotiate a series of twists and turns while pushing a 450-pound cart. The delivery boy receives bonus style points if he is able to reach the finish line while fending off opponents who try to rip a Bulletin out of the unopened bundle.

But, the only game that really matters at an NABC is bridge. With games running non-stop from 9 a.m. until 2 a.m., we have bridge. With events designed for everyone from the greenest BridgePlus+ beginner to the finest world-class player, we have bridge. From the ultra-serious, vugraphable Vanderbilt to the who-cares-pass-the-wine-bottle Midnight Game, we have bridge. From the practice games upstairs in hotel rooms to talking about hands in the restaurant, bar, restroom, lobby, hallways and everywhere else within 14 blocks of the tournament site, we have bridge. And, given the talent and imagination of our players, we will always have “other” games, too.

Good turnout for women’s reception

More than 60 women attended the women’s reception hosted yesterday by the ACBL. The debate was lively as guests deliberated the reasons for the decline in participation in the women’s NABC+ Swiss and knockout teams. They also brainstormed ways to bring women back to the table, and pondered whether it was even worth it to try to build up these games that are running at less than what the ACBL considers an acceptable level. The discussion was moderated by Beth Palmer, who heads up the USBF’s Women’s Team Trials Committee.

Both pros and non-pros spoke up. Professional Kerri Sanborn offered two suggestions that received a collective nod of approval: Stratifying the women’s teams, and/or limiting the number of playing professionals on a team to two.

Monique Smith from Arlington VA drew attention to the lack of young women playing women’s events. “The men have had no problem drawing young men into the open games,” she said. She also suggested that a reception or “something to make it more fun” regularly be scheduled between sessions to give participants a chance to relax, meet each other and talk away from the card table.

Many agreed that the demise of women’s team event originated when the League made men’s events open. Others also cite bracketed knockouts (and other scheduling conflicts) as the culprit. More than a few mentioned the off-putting temperament of players at the table.

CORRECTION: The article about women’s team games that was published on Wednesday incorrectly stated the number of teams entered in the last couple of Machlin Swiss Team events. The contest at the 2012 Memphis NABC attracted 28 teams; the same event in Louisville KY drew 25 teams in spring 2011.

MonitoringAt this and future North American

Championships, ACBL will be monitoring NABC+ events with visible, real-time cameras. The images will be recorded and will be available for later official inspection and review.

By general monitoring of the session and participants’ behavior, ACBL has another source of information that may be useful in determining facts and settling issues arising from some types of ethical and behavioral complaints or actions. Please summon a director if a problem occurs at the table.

This procedure is intended to assure everyone that the playing field is level and that misbehavior will not be tolerated.

Bid Box Alerts and Announcements

When using bid boxes, the ACBL requires that players tap the Alert strip and say “Alert” at the same time.

When making an Announcement, use the Announcement word (such as “transfer”) and tap the Alert strip at the same time.

A player who Alerts or Announces a bid must make sure his opponents are aware that an Alert or Announcement has been made.

he won with his ace and shifted to a low spade. West took this trick and returned the ♠9.

South won, cashed his ♦A, and played another diamond to West’s king. On the spade to East’s 10, South correctly discarded a diamond. But on the last spade, declarer erred by throwing a low club. If he had pitched another diamond, he could have “escaped” for down four.

Now East led the ♣J, a deceptive play that did not fool his partner. When declarer covered with his king, West won with his ace and continued with

the ♣9 to pin South’s 8. East took dummy’s 10 with his queen, cashed the ♦Q (on which West discarded his last low heart), and West took the last three tricks with the ♥K, ♣7 and ♣4.

The defenders had taken three spades, two hearts, two diamonds and four clubs for down five. Plus 500 was a top, gaining all 13 matchpoints. Plus 400 would have been worth “only” 11.5.

The initial declarer-play problem came from the first final session of the Lebhar IMP Pairs, won by Kent Mignocchi and Joel Wooldridge. This was Board 7, rotated to make South the declarer:

Dlr: North ♠ A J 8 7 5 Vul: Both ♥ J 6 4 ♦ J 7 3 ♣ 7 2 ♠ K 10 9 4 ♠ 6 3 2 ♥ Q 2 ♥ 10 7 3 ♦ A 9 2 ♦ Q 10 6 5 ♣ Q J 9 8 ♣ K 5 3 ♠ Q ♥ A K 9 8 5 ♦ K 8 4 ♣ A 10 6 4In 4♥, Wooldridge ducked the first trick (the ♣Q was led), took West’s club continuation, and led the ♠Q, which was covered by the king and ace. Declarer discarded a diamond on the ♠J, ruffed a spade in his hand, ruffed a club in the dummy, ruffed another spade (East threw a diamond) and cashed the ♥A (South’s seventh trick) to give this position: ♠ 8 ♥ J ♦ J 7 3 ♣ -- ♠ -- ♠ -- ♥ Q ♥ 10 7 ♦ A 9 2 ♦ Q 10 6 ♣ J ♣ -- ♠ -- ♥ K 9 ♦ K 8 ♣ 10

Declarer ruffed the ♣10 with dummy’s ♥J and led the last spade. If East had ruffed, South would have discarded his ♦8 and taken two more tricks in trumps.

When East pitched a diamond, declarer did also. West ruffed with his ♥Q and cashed the diamond ace, but now, at Trick 12, South had the ♥ K 9 over East’s ♥10 7, a textbook trump coup.

That brilliant piece of declarer play was worth 9.31 IMPs.

who speculated that instead of selling rugs, he might be playing poker for a living.

Justin Lall, too: “Poker player.”Fulvio Fantoni, part of the Monaco team put

together by Pierre Zimmermann, has a degree in accounting and trade and ran his own accounting firm for many years before giving it up to play bridge full time.

Marion Michielsen of the Netherlands has a law degree. “I’d be an attorney,” she says.

Lynn Deas says she was in medical school when she started playing bridge. “I guess I’d be a doctor.”

Calling herself a “fulltime wife and mother,” Shawn Quinn relates how once she was in sales and marketing. “Yes, I would probably be doing that.”

Geoff Hampson says he’d probably be “doing hard time.”

Kerri Sanborn laments, “I’m not a good enough golfer to do that, and I’ve already shopped too much in my life and I have too much junk.” She pauses. “Maybe decorating.”

involved with tournament bridge at the Wittenberg University Bridge Club. Retired from a management position with the state of Ohio, Johnson played and taught bridge full time.

An Emerald Life Master, Johnson won the Blue Ribbon Pairs in 1985 playing with Eric Rodwell, and the Grand National Teams Championship Flight in 1990 and 2010. Other high finishes include runner-up in the Reisinger, third place in the Vanderbilt and numerous top-10 finishes in NABC pair events. He has also played bridge internationally, with his best finish reaching the round of 32 in the 1994 Rosenblum Teams.

He is survived by his wife, Terri, and their three sons: Bryn, Hunter and Tyler. A more complete obituary will appear in the May issue of the Bridge Bulletin.

a CPA working for a U.S. oil company in the U.K. “They were among the most interesting years of my life,” he recalls. “Every transaction ended in five zeroes. I had a fair amount of power and no responsibility.”

Candy Kuschner, who lives in Reston VA, says it’s likely she would be a teacher if she wasn’t working for the ACBL full time as a tournament director. She taught fourth grade for many years and worked for a private reading center helping to prepare student to take SATs.

So, then, Betty Ann Kennedy—if you were not able to play bridge professionally, what would you be doing?

“Playing bridge!” she laughs.

The electronic device policy at NABCs has been revised to allow players to bring electronic devices such as cell phones into the playing area provided that such devices are turned off.

Further, any such equipment must not be visible during the session

The policy applies to all pairs, team members, captains, coaches, kibitzers and play recorders, except those designated by the ACBL and are in force throughout any actual playing session or segment of play.

A violation of the policy will result in an automatic disciplinary penalty of one full board (or 12 IMPs at that form of scoring) for the first offense. A second offense will result in disqualification from the event for the pair/team. Kibitzers violating this policy will be removed from the playing area for the remainder of the session.

The ACBL is the inaugural partner of The Longest Day, a sunrise-to-sunset team event to raise funds that fuel the care, support and research efforts of the Alzheimer’s Association. This event challenges participants to push their limits and complete approximately 16 hours of a consecutive activity. The theme for The Longest Day is “do something you love” – like play bridge!

When you register to participate in The Longest Day at thelongestday.alz.org you will receive a registration kit with:• Flyers to advertise your event to the community• Publicity tools to maximize your exposure• Items to decorate your club/event on The Longest Day• Giveaways for your participating players/team members

There is a whole host of online tools to help you recruit team members and fundraise virtually.

Here are some ideas for your fundraising team’s activity on The Longest Day:• Play marathon bridge games. The ACBL is relaxing the rules so all sanctioned clubs can hold as many special games as

desired on June 21, 2013. *Special game fees and upgraded masterpoints apply. All sanction fees collected will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Association.

• Teach free beginner bridge lessons all day. It’s a great way to find new players and meet social/former college bridge players in your community, all while supporting the Alzheimer’s Association.

• Stage a bridge exhibition where members of your team play bridge in different public locations over the course of the day. You’ll get a lot of attention and even more donations for your team’s cause.

Approximately 5 million people in the U.S. are living with Alzheimer’s, but by 2050, nearly 16 million people could be affected. There is no cure, but some research indicates that playing mentally challenging games such as bridge may help keep your brain healthy. So do something you love on The Longest Day that might actually slow the onset of Alzheimer’s – play bridge!

Visit thelongestday.alz.org for more information.

The Longest Day will be here June 21st

Free ParkingNABC guests enjoy free parking at the Renaissance. The garages are located

at 9th and St. Charles and 9th and Olive. Players must have a validated pass to exit each time. Passes are available at the information desk at the America’s Center and at the registration desk across from the Landmark Ballroom at the Renaissance.

Gitelman founded BBO in 2001 after 10 years of producing educational software, including two Learn to Play Bridge programs, which can be downloaded for free from the ACBL website (www.acbl.org). His Bridge Master CD for teaching declarer play technique is considered one of the best bridge programs available.

Although his BBO title is president, Gitelman says he spends most of his time programming and lending bridge expertise to the staff. “Uday Ivatury runs the company,” he says.

In recent months, Gitelman says, he has been working on creating a now-available mobile version of BBO (for smart phones and pads).

Gitelman says he doesn’t plan to boycott the NABCs during his sabbatical. He and Winestock will attend to play in a pairs event occasionally – and he may show up for business reasons. He says he intends to spend leisure time away from serious bridge competition and all that it entails.

He says he has become interested in playing pool and may work on getting better at that, plus he and Winestock like to travel and enjoy downhill skiing. “Or I will just relax,” he says. “I like to read.”

Fans of BBO – by far the most popular site for online bridge play – will be encouraged to read that Gitelman plans to focus more on improving the product. “Sometimes,” he says, “it feels like we have created a monster, but it’s a pretty friendly monster.”

TOURNAMENT APPEALS

APPEAL CASE 5Event: Silver Ribbon PairsSession: First QualifierSubject: Disputed Claim

Bd: 2 Michael Cassel Vul: N–S ♠ A Q 4 2 Dlr: East ♥ 3 2 ♦ A 10 9 5 ♣ 10 9 3 Richard Zucker Scott Levine ♠ K 9 5 ♠ 10 8 ♥ J 8 ♥ Q 10 9 7 5 4 ♦ K Q 8 4 2 ♦ J 7 3 ♣ A Q 5 ♣ J 8 Kenneth Shatoff ♠ J 7 6 3 ♥ A K 6 ♦ 6 ♣ K 7 6 4 2 West North East South 2♥ Pass Pass Pass

Contract: 2♥ by EastOpening lead: ♦6Table result: Director ruling: Down one, N–S plus 50Committee ruling: Down one, N–S plus 50The facts: With six cards left, East claimed. The play up

until that point was as follows:Trick 1: ♦6 won by ♦KTrick 2: ♥J won by ♥KTricks 3–5: spades, declarer ruffing in at trick 5Trick 6: ♥Q won by ♥ATrick 7: Low club won by ♣JAfter playing to the first seven tricks, East

exposed his cards and North and South said, ‘Don’t we get a diamond trick?’ East confirmed that they

did. Neither North nor South heard East say anything about pulling the last trump, so the director was summoned. When asked by the director, West was not sure that East had said anything about pulling trump either.

Director’s ruling: Law 70.C.3 says that the director will award a trick to the defense if declarer fails to mention an outstanding trump at the time of his claim if it is at all likely that he is unaware of it and a trick can be lost to that trump through normal play. Accordingly, the director ruled that the declarer loses the ♦A and a diamond ruff, 2♥ by East, down 1, North–South plus 50.

The appeal: East–West appealed the ruling and all four players attended the hearing. East felt that his pulling the last trump was obvious even though he failed to mention it during the claim. The non-offending side maintained that East failed to mention the outstanding trump during the claim.

The decision: The awarding of a trick to an unmentioned outstanding trump during a claim is not automatic. The declarer played the hand in a way that appeared he was conscious of the outstanding trump until the very end. When declarer was last in his hand, he claimed the remaining tricks. When told that the ♦A was still out and would win a trick he conceded the diamond trick but still failed to mention the outstanding trump.

The Appeals Committee felt that with the amount of time and confusion with the claim, East’s failure to mention the outstanding trump was a sign that he did not remember it. Accordingly, the committee upheld the director’s ruling that East–West was down one with the outstanding trump winning a trick. The appeal was found to have merit.

Slow play regulationsA. Slow Play Regulations

Slow play, especially habitual slow play, is a violation of law and subject to penalty. Law 81C1 instructs the director of his duty to ensure that slow play does not disrupt the game. Law 90A and Law 90B2 specifically provide for procedural penalties to be given in cases of undue slow play, and Law 91A empowers the director at his discretion to make such penalties disciplinary and therefore not subject to being overruled by an appeal committee (same as with Zero Tolerance penalties). Further, Law 12C2 permits the director to award an artificial adjusted score when slow play prevents a board from being played.

The preceding paragraph applies to all events. The following paragraph addresses pairs-type movements specifically but applies conceptually to all events.

When a pair has fallen behind it is incumbent on them to make up the time lost as quickly as possible whether at fault or not. All players are expected to make a concerted effort to catch up when they have fallen behind, regardless of the reason for their lateness. In the absence of compelling evidence to the contrary, the director should presume that a pair finishing a round late by more than two or three minutes on more than one occasion during a session is responsible for the lateness. There is a strong expectation that the director will penalize such a pair. The size of a penalty will tend to increase for subsequent instances of slow play and for chronic or egregious slow play. While warnings typically will be given before a penalty is assessed, failure to do so in no way limits the director’s authority to issue a penalty.

An appeal of an action taken by a TD with regard to time may be taken to the Director in Charge of the tournament, and no further.

This regulation is not intended to override specific event conditions regarding slow play.

B. Slow Play Appendices for NABC+ KO Events

Appendix E (VS) and Appendix E (S&W) are replaced with the following:

The tournament director is charged with the responsibility to ensure that each KO match segment finishes within the allotted time. While a time monitor may be employed, the lack of a monitor in no way limits the TD’s authority to apply one or more of the remedies listed below. Discretion is expected, in that the TD may choose to ignore an occasional minor late finish.

Players are expected to be aware, in a general sense, of time used and remaining in a segment in which they are playing regardless of whether a clock is in use or a time announcement has been made. An excuse of “no announcement” or “no clock immediately visible” will not be considered persuasive.

The TD may remove one or more boards from a segment. According to Laws 12 and 86 the TD may award no score (when neither team is more at fault than the other), an assigned score (when a result already exists at one table which the TD wishes to preserve) or an artificial score in IMPs. Every effort should be made to remove boards before they can be played at either table, but not having done so does not preclude removing one or more later.

In consultation with the Director in Charge of the tournament, the TD may require that a particular pair not play in a specified segment, not play against a specified pair or not play together as a pair. The foregoing is expected to be applied only due to egregious circumstances or to unduly repetitious offenders.

The foregoing is intended to make clear the intent that the TD is expected and empowered to take action as deemed necessary to ensure the timely finish of KO segments (and matches).

An appeal of an action taken by a TD with regard to time may be taken to the Director in Charge of the tournament, and no further.

Tournament Terminology 101

If you’re confused by the terms used to describe the different types of bridge events played at clubs and tournaments, you’re not alone. Here’s a list of common bridge events with explanations.

Knockout Teams: an event in which a team of four, five or six players (with four playing at a time) plays another team. The losers are eliminated or “knocked out” while the winners play other winners until only one winning team remains.

The length of a KO match may vary from a single session to a full day (the Vanderbilt and Spingold) to a multi-day event (the Bermuda Bowl).

Bracketed Knockout Teams: a KO event in which teams are divided into groups, usually of eight, 16 or 32 teams, based on their masterpoint holdings. The top group (Bracket I) and all other groups compete in a separate event with their own set of winners.

Compact Knockout Teams: a shorter version of Bracketed KO teams.

Swiss Teams: an event in which a team of four, five or six players (with four playing at a time) plays other teams in seven-, eight- or nine-board matches. Team A sits North-South at Table 1 and East-West at Table 2 while Team B sits East-West at Table 1 and North-South at Table 2. The results are compared and scored by International Match Points (IMPs).

Pairings for the first round are random. Pairings for succeeding rounds are determined by a team’s win-loss record or Victory Point total.

International Match Points (IMPs): the most common method of scoring Swiss Team matches. Scoring example: if Team A scores plus 620 for bidding and making 4♠ on a particular deal and Team B scores only plus 170 (they didn’t bid the game), the difference is 450, which converts to 10 IMPs. The IMP chart is shown on the inside of your convention card.

Victory Points (VPs): a method of scoring Swiss Team matches. After the scores are compared and converted to IMPs, the IMP total is converted to Victory Points. A team’s VP total may be used to determine its next opponents and its final standing.

Side Game Series: a series of single-session pair games that pay red points. These series include at least three sessions and may have as many as six. You may play in as many sessions as you like, but only pairs who play in at least two sessions are eligible for overall gold points. Your best two sessions are used for determining overall winners.

Flighted pairs: When flighting is used, the field is divided by expertise or experience or both into several separate games. Flight A (“unlimited masterpoints”) will be open to all players while the remaining flights will be limited. Flight B might be 0-500 MPs or 0-1000 MPs while Flight C might be 0-300 or 0-500.

Each flight is scored individually, and masterpoint awards are made for each flight.

The masterpoint holdings of the players determine their flight. If one player is quite expert while his partner is new to the game, the pair must compete in Flight A.

In flighted events, you may play up but not down. That means you may play in Flight A or Flight B even if your masterpoint holding qualifies you for Flight C. Conversely, you may not play in Flight B or Flight C if you are a Flight A player.

Stratified pairs: The idea is to compete against everyone but to be ranked only with your peers.

Each pair is assigned a stratum or “strat” based on the masterpoint holding of the partner with more masterpoints.

Example: A = 1000+ masterpoints; B = 300-1000; C = 0-300.

Thus, the most experienced players are placed in Strat A, intermediate players in Strat B and less experienced players in Strat C. Masterpoints are awarded for placings in all strats but gold points are awarded only in A and B.

Rookie, masterpoints, stratified pairs -- these terms may be confusing to new members of the American Contract Bridge League. Here’s a list of terms and their meanings:

Masterpoints: the unit which measures bridge achievement in competition. Masterpoints are awarded at ACBL clubs and tournaments in amounts proportional to the size and classification of the event and the rating of the club or tournament.

Black points: awarded at club games. Some special club games award red, gold or silver points.

Silver points: awarded for sectional firsts and overall placing at sectional tournaments. Also awarded at Sectional Tournaments at Clubs (STaC).

Red points: awarded for section placements at regional tournaments and NABCs. Also awarded at clubs for special events such as the qualifying rounds of the North American Open Pairs and the Grand National Teams.

Gold points: awarded for section firsts and overall placing in regionally rated events that have no upper masterpoint restrictions.

Gold points are also awarded for sectional firsts and overall placing in regional events of two or more sessions that have a masterpoint limit of 750 or more points.

One gold point is awarded to section winners in the annual ACBL Instant Matchpoint Game in sections of seven or more tables.

In addition, new players may now win gold points in their own NABC events: 1.50 gold in the National 199er Pairs at the Summer NABC and 1.00 gold in the National 99er Pairs at the Fall NABC (the remainder of the award is in red points).

A major source of gold points is the Bracketed Knockout Teams. The overall awards for the top

The game proceeds normally; the difference comes when the scores are tabulated and ranked.

In a three-strat game, the scores are ranked three times. The first ranking is done as in a regular open game. These are the Strat A results.

If a B or C pair does well in this ranking, they receive full credit for that performance. It is not all that uncommon for a Strat C pair to place first overall, and they receive the full masterpoint award for that game.

Note: A pair is eligible for only one set of masterpoint awards and automatically receives the highest award.

The second ranking compares the scores of only the B and C pairs; the scores of the Strat A pairs are eliminated. Once again, if a C pair does well, they receive points for their finishing position in the Strat B results.

The third and final ranking compares the scores of only the C pairs; all the scores of the Strat A and B pairs are eliminated.

Strati-flighted pairs: The top group plays in a game of their own (Flight A). The rest of the field in divided into strats and plays as in a regular stratified pairs.

There can even be stratification within Flight A, frequently called Flight A/X. Flight A may be listed as 3000+ MPs while Flight X may be listed as 0-3000 MPs.

Fresh from the spa comes our new Vanderbilt pickers, Flora and Fauna. They may be a little baudy, but they sure know their teams:

Flora: My Goodness, all of my Girls went south, so I have to look north. Lots of Canadian boys still left, starting with Grainger. There is that cute Lee boy on the team; but Fleisher, while boring, will prevail.

Fauna: You want cute, I have all sorts of Dutch boys and that very eligible Zagorin boy. I do not know what to make of those other Canadians on the Huang team. They keep defying the odds. Maybe they just do not know they are supposed to lose. The Chinese pair is strong and is motivating them. But I love those Dutch boys and their little caps so I must be true to them.

Flora: Amoils vs Monaco. Monaco is awfully good and playing well, but that is offset by that sweet Bessis boy on Amoils. My heart says yes, but my soul says no. Au revoir, Thomas. Til we meet again. Another Canadian goes with him.

Fauna: I am crushed by 1 IMP. My heart is shattered. Oh, Norby, I needed you. Alas, Rosenthal awaits Nickell, the victor of this brutal match. If Rosenthal can stay in the boat for the first half, those Swedes will have their way with the Empire. Doesn’t that Johan boy have the prettiest smile? With a Canadian coach, all matches have a Canadian rooting interest

presented to the ACBL player who wins the most masterpoints during a calendar year. Originally the McKenney Trophy, it was put into play by William E. McKenney, ACBL executive secretary. It was known as the McKenney Trophy from 1937 to 1981.

The list was expanded to include the top 500 players in 1982 and called the Top 500 from 1982 to 1985. It was renamed the Barry Crane Top 500 in 1986.

Crane, who was murdered in July 1985, was the ACBL’s top masterpoint holder at that time and was acknowledged by his peers to be unequaled as a masterpoint winner and a matchpoint player.

Mini-McKenney races: In 1974 the ACBL Board of Directors voted to recognize masterpoint achievements among player below the rank of Life Master. The Bridge Bulletin recognizes leaders ACBL-wide. At the unit level, winners in each category receive recognition and special medallions.

All points won during a calendar year are counted in these races.

Helen Shanbrom Ace of Clubs contests: This competition was created in 1984 to recognize achievement at the club level. Winners are recognized at the unit level as well as ACBL-wide.

No. 2 James Cayne trailed original No. 47 David Grainer by 28 with a set to go and mounted a rally in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late and the underdogs advanced with a 146-136 win.

Original No. 35 Shan Huang, upset winners over No. 3 John Diamond on Tuesday, clipped the Daniel Korbel squad 153-130.

The other matches were runaways as teams led by Les Amoils (captain of the winning squad in 2012), Ricco van Prooijen, Martin Fleisher and Andrew Rosenthal advanced.

Bid ‘em up, play ‘em up (2007)By Barry Rigal

Board 3 of the afternoon Silodor Open Pairs saw a deal (here rotated) where North–South would appear to be due to get in trouble: Dlr: West ♠ 10 7 3 Vul: N–S ♥ A 4 ♦ A J 9 5 4 2 ♣ Q 6 ♠ J 8 ♠ Q 6 4 2 ♥ 7 6 ♥ Q 9 3 2 ♦ K Q 10 7 3 ♦ 6 ♣ J 10 9 2 ♣ 8 7 5 3 ♠ A K 9 5 ♥ K J 10 8 5 ♦ 8 ♣ A K 4

Notrump plays only for 11 tricks, though slam is not without play. Pamela Granovetter (an apostle

of sound bidding) found a way to avoid trouble; she passed the North hand! Partner Dick Katz found a way to get back in trouble. (Reader, add your own parenthesis here about bidding styles.) He opened the South hand 1♥ and the auction proceeded:

Granovetter Katz Pass 1♥ 2♦ 2♠ 3♥ 4NT 5♥ 6♥

Katz had gotten himself into an awkward spot, but the advantage of playing hearts as opposed to notrump was that a black loser could be ruffed in dummy. How should 6♥ be played on the ♣J lead? Declarer wins in hand and plays the ♦A and ruffs a diamond. East pitches a club, and now declarer needs to commit himself to the ♥Q being with East (clearly, the odds favor this given the diamond break).

He leads a club to the queen, a low heart to the

10, cashes the ♣K, pitching a spade from dummy. Next comes the ♠A K and a spade ruff with dummy’s ♥A. Now he ruffs another diamond to hand with the ♥8, and in the three-card ending, he exits with his losing spade. With the ♥K J left, he can claim the last two tricks. This line requires nothing more than the ♥Q onside.

At the table I was watching, I saw Giorgio Duboin and Roy Welland defending 4♥ on the auction 1♦–1♥; 2♦–2♠; 3♥–4♣; 4♥–Pass. Minus 680 was going to be a very poor score for them, but Duboin led the ♥7. Declarer made the mistake of going up with the ♥A. (There are positions where you want to retain high trumps in hand, but this is not one of them.)

Declarer ruffed a diamond to hand and cashed the top clubs and spades, but when he led a third spade Duboin ruffed in front of dummy’s ♥4 with the ♥6, and now declarer could only get 11 tricks, and that was an average result.

A look back

Ron Smith burst onto the national bridge scene in 1973 as part of the runner-up squad in the Grand National Teams, Championship Flight. He solidified his place among the ACBL’s top players in 1979, winning the Kaplan Blue Ribbon Pairs in impressive fashion with Bobby Levin.

Today’s Stratified Open Pairs is named in Smith’s honor. The two-session event is scheduled for 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

In more than 30 years of competing at high levels, Smith has won six North American championships and has 12 seconds.

He and regular partner Billy Cohen were part of a unique foursome that won the Reisinger Board-a-Match Teams in 1987. The team was composed of a gentile (Smith), a Jew (Cohen), a Pakistani (Zia Mahmood) and an Indian (Jaggy Shivdasani).

Smith is a Grand Life Master with more

than 27,000 masterpoints to his credit. In addition to his skill as a bridge player, Smith is an accomplished pianist who has entertained tournament goers for years in informal between-sessions performances.

Originally from St. Louis, Smith was a longtime resident of San Francisco before moving to Las Vegas NV.
