PCPS West Middle School Continuous Learning Daily Assignments Weeks Four & Five, April 27th-May 8th Work Directions Each day the PCPS is not in session, students choose activities from each subject in which they are enrolled. (See attached sheet) Feel free to use the online platforms listed. Write the date the assignment/activity was completed in the box. You will return the packet with your child’s name and your signature on May 11th. Or you can scan and email the packet to your teacher. The Oklahoma State Department of Education has provided the following guidelines for the amount of time students should spend on instruction daily. 6th through 12th grade: 3 hours a day 40-60 minutes, 4 times a week for English 40-60 minutes, 4 times a week for math 40-60 minutes, 2 times a week for science 40-60 minutes, 2 times a week for social studies Flexible time for physical education, music, art, world languages, etc. Additional time may be required for Advanced Placement or IB course Directions for Additional opportunities for Continuous Learning: Each day pick one activity below to complete. Tell what you would like to learn about the planets in school. 5. _____ Make a menu for home including 3 meals a day for a month. Make a menu for school including breakfast & lunch. You are in charge of making sure that health is a priority, so make sure to have healthy choices. Tell about your favorite meal. See if you can find the recipe for this meal. Create your own recipe for a meal. 6. _____ What’s your favorite animal? Describe your animal, tell what it eats and where it lives. Draw your animal. Pretend you are that animal and write a pretend story about your life using personification. Parents and Students:

Wanted to let you know how much we are missing all of you! We hope you find yourself safe and well and have enjoyed the activities that have been sent home or posted on the website. As we approach the ending of this unique school year we want to thank you for partnering with us as we work with your student. It is very much appreciated!

Save the Dates:

6th grade packet drop off and locker pick up May 11th – 3pm-6pm

7th grade packet drop off and locker pick up May 12th – 3pm-6pm We will do our very best to make this a smooth process. Please remain in your vehicle and we will bring the contents of your students locker to you. During these times you will also be able to drop off any library books and textbooks that need to come back to the building. Thanks in advance for your patience during this time.

Important Information:

Spring Pictures and Yearbooks: These items will be released when we have been given the clearance to do so by the State Department of Education. Both items are still in production but will reach out with the process of getting these items to you as soon as we are allowed to. (Thanks again for your patience)

Tdap Vaccine: Students entering the 7th grade in the fall will need to provide documentation that they have received this vaccination before being able to enroll in Ponca City Public Schools. During this time of social distancing, please mail a copy of the documentation to 613 East Grand, Ponca City, OK 74601 Attention: Barbara Cusick. Students who have not completed this requirement will not be able to have a schedule made for them.

Pre-Algebra/Algebra Calculator: Students that will be enrolled in either of these classes at East next year will need to get a TI-30XS MultiView calculator.

In your notebook, draw or “scratch” the leaf using crayons. *If the leaf is green you can rub the leaf on paper and the chlorophyll will color your page! Can you identify the tree? Describe as many characteristics as you can about each tree/leaf.

What is the difference between weather and climate? This week you will track weather in your town and at least one other town to create a graph. Start a paper where you record the low & high temperatures for the day and then the amount of precipitation. Now contact a friend or family member in another town, state, or country and ask them the same about their weather for the day. Extension - contact 2-5 people in different places.

Write out a family recipe. Figure each ingredient if you doubled the amount. What would the amounts be if you made it for a single person? If you added all the dry ingredients, how much would you have? **If you are able to check you school gmail and google classroom

Place yourself in the shoes of one of the characters you have just read about and write a diary entry of a key moment from the story (so write it like you’re that character experiencing that key moment, example Harry Potter when he finds out he is a wizard) Your entry should be at least a paragraph in length and contain information you learned from the book when the character was in that specific place and time. Remember to use a first person perspective.

Using personification, giving non living things human characteristics and feelings, write a creative paragraph from the perspective of one of the non human things you identified in your science assignment. Example: “The tree danced in the wind.” Or Practice Figurative Language on Study Island for 20 minutes.

● Which is the best invisible ink? Write 3 messages using milk, lemon juice, and vinegar. Make sure to label! Allow to dry. *substitutes-acidic juices such as grape juice also work. Heat up the paper with a blow dryer to see the message appear. *no blow dryer? Set paper outside, in the sun, on the sidewalk on a hot day(70+). Document your results in your science notebook.

See if they are smarter than a sixth grader. :)  Extension: Have someone in your household write 4 word problems for you to figure out.  ** If able check your google classroom. 

Find the area of the walls in your room. Remember Area of a rectangle is found with the formula A = bh. If a gallon of paint covers about 400 square feet. As the saying goes, “rules are meant to be broken.” Tell about a time when you broke the rules and what happened as a result. Please try to write a well developed paragraph that fully answers the “saying” above.

Write a letter to yourself to read a year from now about the events happening in your life and with the virus. Make sure and put down the date. If there is anything you are hoping will be different by this time next year, you could put that down and see if one year from now your hope has come true. *Reading Plus and Google classroom are options.

A genie lands in the midpoint of a story, tv show, or movie you have just read or watched (if you are playing a video game with a storyline, you could try to use it) and grants the two main characters three wishes. What do they wish for and why? Finally, would their wishes have changed anything about the story? How so? Again think about the cause and effect relationship and how this may have altered the path of the book you have been reading.

Write a descriptive paragraph of what you ate today or your favorite meal. You must use vivid sensory language in your description. Write a paragraph of 5-7 well-written sentences. Don’t forget a topic sentence and concluding sentence.

● Backyard scientist - use a hula hoop (or string) to isolate an area to observe. Choose a spot for your hoop that seems to have a lot happening inside, but be aware that there may be even more (or less) happening at other places in the ecosystem. Observe what is in your hoop and repeat at different times of the day. Take notes and photograph or sketch what passes through.
