Having just returned from Shanghai China after being a guestspeaker at the Travelscene American Express conference I nowreally understand just how competitive China is and how much of awow factor it has. The first thing that strikes you is the size ofeverything. I have been to Beijing before, but the city of Shanghai just getsbigger. With the World Expo in 2011, Shanghai is in the final stagesof building a new city on the site of the World Expo and what isreally exciting is the infrastructure they is being built to supportthe city. Roads, fast trains, impressive airports, every international hotelbrand that you can think of and more hotels both under constructionand in the pipeline, it is impressive. It makes Sydney and evenMelbourne look like a planning country town in comparison. The simplicity of the people city of Shanghai is outweighed bythe sophistication of the facilities, restaurants, entertainment andshopping. China is really worth a look and from what I experienced, will only get better. Having spent the weekend with the Travelscene American Expressmembers we enjoyed some inspirational speakers and businesssessions I would like to also congratulate the team at TravelsceneAmerican Express for an outstanding conference. Congratulations also to all of the winners of the company serviceawards which included tenure with the group spanning more that30 years, state and national business performance and the allimportant Office of the Year. These conferences are a great way for AFTA to share the messagesthat we have and for me personally to talk to members and agents. They give me a real insight to the views on the ground and fromagent principles and consultants working everyday inthe frontline and all done in an enjoyableenvironment. It was also very rewarding to have such strongsupport from the group for the AFTA discussion paperand the proposals outlined in advance of the reviewof consumer protection.

Best Value Tours with the Best Inclusions
Disembarking from a comfortable flight on Cathay Pacific we
were met by the Wendy Wu Shanghai staff members who would
accompany us and answer our many questions on our “China
Experience” tour.
We set off on our first day of sightseeing, beginning with the old
town whose cobbled streets were lined with traditional shops and
made you forget you were in one of the world’s busiest and most
cosmopolitan cities.
Our day out and about showed us exactly how a Wendy Wu
group tour operates. Our National Escort and local guides were
friendly, spoke good English, full of information and loved our
Aussie accents!
Left to our own devices for the afternoon before the big
welcome dinner, most people hit the shops on the famous
Nanjing Road which is considered the world’s biggest and longest
shopping street. We soon found that the best way to get a deal
was to bargain - but a quick lesson in Mandarin might help us for
future purchases.
The welcome dinner was held in the
magnificent ballroom at the Golden River
Hotel. Once we were comfortably settled,
General Manager Alan Alcock gave an
opening speech thanking agents for their
hard work over the last troublesome year.
“Without our loyal agents continually promoting Wendy Wu Tours
product over the last 12 months we would not have come out of
the financial crisis as well as we have”, he said to a cheer from all
the agents.
He continued “We appreciate that this time of year can be a busy
time for agencies and we thank all the agents for joining this
somewhat different famil where, hopefully, you will all learn and
experience China so you
feel more confident
to sell the Wendy Wu
Tours’ product to
your customers”.
The banquet was a superb example of the traditional delicacies
for which the region is known and we could only imagine what
further delights were in store over the next week in a country
which has countless different superb cuisines.
The day had been a great introduction to this amazing country
and we look forward to further adventures in Shanghai before
travelling to Xian.
www.wendywutours.com.au Look out for our next update from Xian on 24th November! Lic No 2TA4792.
Nihao from China! Wendy Wu Tours Mega Famil
ON Monday November 16 the inaugural Wendy Wu Tours-Cathay Pacific Mega-Famil began with 70 agents from across Australia and South Africa meeting in Shanghai for a 10-day adventure.
