School Counseling Office Important Information

Students/Parents/Guardians ~ we hope that you’ve had a smooth transition into the new school year. The school counselors are busy meeting with seniors and getting to know the new ninth grade students! As we start to plan for the rest of the year, we are turning our attention to career education. While Dallastown offers a rich array of course options, we also offer many experiential career opportunities for our students. Dallastown has teamed up with York County Alliance for Learning (YCAL) to offer Career Exploration Programs in numerous career fields. These experiences are free to the students. Students can choose from multiple career fields, so there is something for everyone! This isn’t just a great opportunity to explore careers, it’s also a solid experience to add to a resume and/or a college application. We encourage all our students to consider participating in one or more of these activities, as it is time well-spent when planning for the future. Most of the programs are available for students in grades 10, 11, and 12. Please take a moment to explore the YCAL offerings and register for a program if you think that you may have an interest in the field. Please know that there are limited spots available, so your early registration is encouraged. Some programs even start this week!

Please go to http://ycal.us/ to access the list of Career Education Programs and for the link to register. If you have further questions, please contact Bill Probert, Workforce, Career, and College Counselor at (717) 244-4021 Ext. 3545. Senior Parents/Guardians ~ it can be scary navigating the financial aid waters! We have two events that can help you find a level of comfort with this process. Please consider taking advantage of both opportunities.

Financial Aid Night – September 26th at Dallastown Area High School (6:30-7:30 PM) Auditorium FAFSA Workshop – October 3rd at Red Lion High School (5:00-8:00 PM)

Participants need to pre-register for this event by calling Red Lion at 717-246-1611 ext. 6. A financial aid representative will be present to answer all of your financial aid questions and to walk you through the process of completing your FAFSA!

Counseling Calendar ~ you will find important dates, events, and links to help you stay informed about the latest happenings in our office. As always, please contact your child’s school counselor should you have any questions.

Important update from Chartwells

To improve the speed of cashier lines we are asking that students put deposits in the Drop Box in the mornings. The box is

located on the wall inside the entrance to the cafeteria. We will no longer be giving change back at the registers starting

Monday Sept 10th. We would like to be cashless at the registers during service times to help speed up the lines. We have

been reminding students that they will not be able to get change if they forget to put their deposits in the box and need to

add money to their accounts.

Also, the Breakfast Den is open and serving breakfast items until 9:30am and then is open late as it changes to the Pizza Den for those students that are here for after school activities! The Wildcat Café is open before and after school.

Department of the Month: English

London Trip Over the summer six Dallastown students traveled with Mrs. Yuninger to London, England, to study culture and theater. They attended West-End productions, met professional actors at the stage door, toured William Shakespeare’s birthplace and a variety of other historic landmarks. The students learned to navigate the streets and underground rail system, eventually each student leading one of the routes to a daily destination. The English department plans to continue to offer this valuable opportunity for overseas study each year.

Poetry Out Loud Competition Students will have the chance to practice the art of voice and performance, memorizing and reciting canonical poetry in the classroom tier of Dallastown High School’s annual Poetry Out Loud competition. The school-wide tier of this national competition is free and open to the public December 19th in the Theater Room at 7 p.m. All students in grades 9-12 are welcome and encouraged to participate. Interested students should see Mrs. Yuninger in room 120 for more information.

Dallastown Area High School Newspaper The Beacon, Dallastown’s student newspaper since 1929, has several updates coming in the 2018-19 school year. With more students taking both the Introduction to Journalism and Print and Digital Journalism classes, the publication is expanding its coverage. In addition to the annual goal of nine printed issues each year, the staff is also in the process of creating an interactive website that can be updated more frequently, allowing faster news coverage for a larger audience. Until the website goes live, community members can keep up with Beacon happenings by following their Instagram and Twitter accounts @dtbeacon.

Course Highlight: English I This fall 9th grade English students are reviewing literature terminology and writing techniques to enhance previous knowledge with the goal of further developing writing skills to become more sophisticated writers. English I teachers are excited to focus on independent reading this year, linking students’ book choices with nonfiction readings about real-world issues. We look forward to an engaging year for students in this course!

Course Highlight: English II In part A of 10th grade English, students will have the opportunity to engage in project-based learning with the Informed Citizen project. Later this trimester, students will select a real-world, 21st century issue about which they are passionate, and they will become an expert on that issue, ultimately generating their own plausible, innovative solution for the issue. The project involves reading and analyzing nonfiction, writing a report, and proposing a solution to the class via an oral presentation or video production. We are excited to inspire our students with this interdisciplinary learning opportunity this year!

Course Highlight: Theater Study During the first trimester, members of Mrs. Yuninger’s Theater Study class have the opportunity to engage in authentic learning experiences while working on the Dallastown Performing Arts Club’s upcoming fall production of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The class will learn all the responsibilities and skills of backstage professionals as well as actors as they support another excellent DPAC fall play running October 25th to 28th. Tickets will be available online via the DPAC website http://dpacarts2.wixsite.com/home.

New English Course for 2018-2019 We are excited to announce a new personalized learning opportunity for upperclassmen at DAHS. Technical Writing for Career Readiness is a course designed for students whose post-secondary plans include entering the workforce. In this course, students will have the opportunity to explore the types of writing they will encounter within their chosen field. In addition, students will have the chance to visit local businesses and view presentations from individuals in the student’s field of interest.
