Opening New DoorsThe basics of getting off to a fresh start with Dahn Yoga

Dahn Yoga is not your typical yoga program. Like other yoga traditions, it promotes a healthy integration of mind and body

through proper breathing, stretching, and other physical exercise. Energy awareness and key aspects of martial arts training are also incorporated into Dahn Yoga.

The most important uniqueness, how-ever, is a focus on our brain’s potential through utilization of the 5 steps of Brain Education System Training, or BEST 5.

All Dahn Yoga courses involve a com-bination of physical exercises, meditation,

lectures, and games. At any time, if any component of the training is uncomfort-able, practitioners may sit out or communi-cate their discomfort with a member of the training staff.

These programs are designed to help the practitioners take an active role in their own personal development and access un-limited brain potential. With that in mind, although practitioners are supported and encouraged to challenge perceived limi-tations if they so choose, Dahn Yoga will never demand that they perform anything beyond their capacity. From the president

As the president of Dahn Yoga, it is my honor and pleasure to welcome you to the first issue of our newslet-ter, Dahn Yoga Life.

Dahn Yoga is always looking for bet-ter ways to convey training methods and principles or share news with our members. This newsletter is our lat-est effort. Though our Dahn Yoga has a history of nearly 30 years in Korea and about 15 years in the US, there have been times when difficulties in communication made me feel as if we could only gaze longingly at each oth-er without being able to say anything.

I hope that the improved communi-cation afforded by this newsletter will allow us greater tenderness and trust in our relationship with each other.

We at Dahn Yoga will constantly strive for our ideal as a Hongik corpo-ration; we will work toward perfection with diligence and enthusiasm.

As much as I cherish this as a new opportunity to serve you, I hope that you participate actively and share your news with our community. Whether you want to tell us about news from your area or at your center; or about your activities as a healer, member, or instructor; please fill us in and we will do our best to share your news with everyone who reads Dahn Yoga Life.

Thank you for your continued sup-port and your love.

1 rather than focusing on a strict set of poses, Dahn Yoga incorpo-

rates a wide variety of mind-body ex-ercises that help practitioners develop their personal health and wellbeing. Dahn Yoga focuses on the development of the body’s core strength as the basis of physical, mental, and spiritual health.

2 Dahn Yoga teaches practitioners to trust their body’s natural wis-

dom and does not require a high degree of flexibility, balance, or strength to fol-low the general exercises. Thus, people of all ages, body types, and fitness levels may participate comfortably.

3 while most other forms of yoga originated in India, Dahn Yoga is a

modernized version of ancient Korean mind-body practice.

4 Dahn Yoga includes a unique emphasis on the brain as the de-

terminer of health and wellbeing. Thus, classes may include brain exercises that challenge and sharpen the mind.

5 Dahn Yoga incorporates Brain wave Vibration as a method of

moving meditation, which prepares the body and mind for greater focus during other types of meditation.

6 Dahn Yoga practitioners report re-markable results in short periods

of time, especially with pain manage-ment. Many also report reduction of symptoms associated with many chron-ic illness, including multiple sclerosis, high blood pressure, diabetes, arthritis, sciatica, and asthma.

7 Dahn Yoga centers offer a wide variety of training opportunities

beyond the regular yoga class, such as Dahnmudo martial arts, Dahn healing techniques, and chakra development.

8 while most yoga centers are op-erated independently, Dahn Yoga

offers a unique sense of community through which members can network with other members in 18 states in the US and 10 countries around the world.

Connecting the Dots8 Facts you should know about Dahn Yoga

what members say...“As a psychiatrist, I quickly recognized that this was not just an exercise program. It is a process that benefits your entire being.”

“It goes where no yoga has gone before. Energizing! Healing from within. Communicating with your soul. No other yoga works this way.”

“This form of exercise is gradual and gentle. Everyone in the program moves along with his/her pace and level of comfort.”

“Dahn Yoga has stronger energy and quicker results. [It] has more different types of techniques to incorporate into your daily life.”

“Always active with innovative healing tools, ideas, workshops and trainings, etc. Dahn Yoga has helped me laugh more and helped me with my meditation life more than ...[other types of] yoga.”

Chunjikiun GeneratorsThe Arlington Center instructors and members reach out to the community!

Our center, which opened in 2005, sits in the heart of the town square in Arlington, Massachussetts.

Arlington is a very active community, and integrating into it has been one of our goals since I first became manager here in 2007. My assistant manager, Erin Sabumnim, and I wanted to earn the trust of our community and let people feel that they could bring their loved ones here for health and peace.

And that’s what we’re creating! We get a lot of referrals and have become friendly with our neighbors. It helps that we’re right next to Starbucks—we get a lot of foot traffic and several em-ployees take our classes. One of them came in and said, “I had heard negative information about this yoga, but our customers told us it wasn’t true, so I’ve come to try it!”

Because I felt the importance of devel-oping a personal presence that people could trust, I joined the local Business Networking International (BNI) chapter last March. Through BNI, I met great

people who contributed to our center’s growth, several of whom became mem-bers here at our center.

We’ve also been reaching out through Brain Education for Enhanced Learning (BE for EL) with various individuals.

One member is an Executive Deputy Director at a nearby school for at-risk girls who has implemented BE for EL there for several years. She plans to

involve more schools, and will become Boston’s first BE Leadership trainer in the upcoming month!

Our members are initiating projects like our Mago Earth Day Festival in April as well. Their love of our vision makes me truly happy in times of diffi-culty. I hope to make a center that is for the members, of the members, and by the members!

It’s natural for us as people to talk to each other about our experiences in order to have a better understanding of ourselves and our world. At our Dahn Yoga Centers, we like to do that over a warm cup of tea.

I think anyone can agree that to know and to get what we want from this practice, or anything else, it’s important to be honest and consistent and also to communicate! Just as we hope you will be honest with yourself about your experi-ences and your effort, Dahn Yoga Life will strive to provide and facilitate communication that is honest and consistent.

In this section, we invite all of our readers to share what you’re experiencing from your Dahn Yoga classes, commu-nicate what you’re feeling in your body or what’s on your mind, what large or small miracles you created, or ask any questions about training.

What we’ll do, is draw from all of our resources—from various references or instructors to other Dahn Yoga mem-bers or even senior masters—to answer your questions or offer relevant principles to support you on your path of self-exploration. Although we probably won’t be able to address every question or comment in print, we’ll try to highlight the topics about which more people want to share their experi-ence or express their curiosity. Some of our responses may even become separate, whole articles!

I hope that “Tea Time” will become a space where we can offer each other encouragement or sage advice, the sat-isfaction of good, accurate information or even a funny sto-ry. Dahn Yoga Life is waiting at the ready. Please don’t hesi-tate to send us an e-mail: [email protected], or give us a call: (213)545-1785 — Michelle Seo

Brain Management Consultant Sharing what you love through a new, high-demand profession

In all of his many years as a Dahn Yoga instructor, manager, and even Sunsa, or Senior Master, Joongji Sunsanim never expected

to sing one of his favorite Korean songs in front of a group of program partici-pants. (He later admitted that it was the first time he had ever actually done that, in all the years he had stood in front of many people as a trainer.)

But when he asked the participants in a recent Brain Management Consultant, or BMC, course to select the next per-son to come up to the front and spon-taneously sing a song, he heard them calling his own name. Being someone who practices what he preaches, Joongji

upcoming BMC scheduleBrain Management Consultant training is available every month, alternating be-tween the east and west coast for easier traveling. The training takes 5 nights and 6 days; it begins on the evening of the first day and ends on the morn-ing of the last day. Below is our tentative schedule which is subject to change. TBA locations will probably be set in Arizona.

Sunsanim didn’t hesitate to set an ex-ample with full enthusiasm and demon-strate yet again what it means to apply the principles of BE in your life as a true Brain Management Consultant.

That’s what the BMC course helps you do. It helps you confidently answer the question, “Why does everyone need to learn Brain Education?” You are provided with the tools you need to

implement Brain Education in your ev-eryday life meaningfully and teach it to others professionally.

teaching to LearnCommon sense and experience compel most people to agree that the best way to learn something is to teach it, and that the best way to teach is from your own experience. From dahnjon tapping, to intestine exercises, to do-in exercis-es as well as Brain Wave Vibration and Dahnmu (energy dancing), what par-ticipants experience at the BMC course goes far beyond the regular classes.

Instead of spending a small portion of a one-hour class on each exercise, they take the time to learn it in depth so that they are able to show people how to do it and check if they’re doing it right.

During the course, participants be-come well-acquainted with all five steps of Brain Education and share in each other’s progress and reactions. Through this process they discover how to use BE principles to manage their brain.

The BMC course enables participants to learn the principles and practices

of Brain Education experientially, so that they can have confidence when teaching others. Successful comple-tion of the course qualifies participants to be officially certified by IBREA, the International Brain Education Association. They are also qualified to receive monetary compensation for teaching Brain Education programs outside of Dahn Yoga or Body + Brain Holistic Yoga Centers.

BMCs can receive a commission for introducing members to various pro-grams and can incorporate their prac-tice into pre-existing businesses such as an office for Eastern medicine, a chiropractic clinic, or even a person-al coaching business. They come from a variety of educational and cultural backgrounds, and many of them have become involved in outreach—serving their local community by providing Brain Education in places such as senior centers or even public parks.

One early BMC graduate, Waikwong Yeung from Oregon, integrated his BMC training into his Advanced Network Chiropractic practice. He

had experienced the benefits of Brain Education exercises from attending classes at a Dahn Yoga Center and start-ed teaching them to his patients to help ease and speed their recovery, and give them more power and responsibility over their treatment.

Through the BMC course, Waikwong Healernim learned a flow and system of exercises that let him create consis-tently effective classes and better advise his patients. As a result of the classes, his patients can feel the energy flowing in their body as he works on it, giving them greater trust in his service. They now also require fewer treatments.

that was amazing!Besides being effective as a course for learning to teach others, the BMC course has become highly popular for self-development. This comprehensive, step-by-step program helps participants improve blood and energy circulation and relax their muscles and joints.

Healthy energy circulation can per-form wonders in the body both subtle

and obvious. At the end of a training session, it is common to see partici-pants’ faces glowing, their smiles radi-ant as they give comments like: “That was amazing!” or even “I feel so re-freshed. I feel like a new person.”

It makes sense: if ten minutes of Brain Wave Vibration in a regular Dahn Yoga class can help you feel relaxed and reju-venated, you can imagine how bright and energized you can feel from devot-ing a few days to training.

There is an feeling of lightness and bliss, of peace, freedom, gratitude, and unconditional love, which is difficult to explain. If you are willing to trust your experience, it is possible to experience this cosmic energy we call Chunjikiun.

Richard Bingham from the Dahn Yoga center in Copperfield, TX took the plunge, and he “was able to connect deeper with cosmic (universal) energy.” He said, “I found greater peace. I was able to feel the energy moving in my body more than ever.”

Over 300 BMCs have taken the course since it was first offered in May

Dahn Yoga Opens New Doors(Continued from p.1)

Dahn Yoga welcomes everyone to “start from where you are,” and we can help you modify exercises to make them better suit injuries, chronic pains, or other physical challenges.

Dahn Yoga unconditionally opposes doing any act or causing any situation that recklessly or intentionally subjects a practitioner to the risk of psychologi-cal or physical mistreatment or harm, including embarrassment, harassment, or ridicule. If you feel that you have been mistreated in any way, please im-mediately notify the Main Coordinator for the program or contact Customer Service at (877)477-9642 or e-mail: [email protected].

Dahn Yoga encourages each practi-tioner to respect the practice environ-ment by arriving on time and observing etiquette regarding quiet, bowing, and modest dress. Since every member has a right to exercise in a comfortable and unobstructed environment, these cour-tesies will have a very positive effect on the experience of all who participate.

Dahn Yoga training also includes space and time for practitioners to con-verse with each other about their expe-riences, concerns, and successes. Over the years we have found that everyone’s experience is enhanced when they learn that others might have similar questions or difficulties or progress in a similar

way by talking to each other. However, this is not meant to impinge on any-one’s privacy, so intimate disclosures are neither required nor expected.

Since feedback helps everyone grow, Dahn Yoga courses usually provide feedback forms for each of the practitio-ners to share their suggestions and re-actions. In addition, we will gratefully accept feedback beyond the classroom online at the official Dahn Yoga web-site: www.dahnyoga.com.

Although this information may seem like simple common sense to you, we hoped it would be helpful for us to pres-ent it again here for the sake of clarity. Just in case. — Joseph Alexander

of 2009. The program is designed to ac-comodate those with no previous expe-rience at Dahn Yoga or Body + Brain locations, so that they can take the pro-gram and fnd it deeply satisfying.

Kigong: From foreign to familiarA quick look at how kigong fits into Dahn Yoga

You may have noticed that our Dahn Yoga community has recently turned its attention once again to kigong.

So, what is kigong and what does it have to do with Dahn Yoga? To answer this question, let’s take a look at the fas-cinating roots of Eastern mind-body-energy practices and understand the ancient history of the exercise we enjoy at our Dahn Centers.

Ki, sometimes written “Qi” (pro-nounced “Chi”), is most commonly translated to mean “energy.” It can also be translated as “life force,” “air,” or “breath;” in Hindu traditions, the same life force is called “prana.”

Thousands of years before the birth of Western medicine, the exploration of ki in humans and nature formed the basis of medical traditions, martial arts, spiritual and religious traditions, and even cultural and political sys-tems. This awareness of the principles

of energy enabled people to determine, for example, the healthiest food for the body, the ideal crop for the region, or the proper timing for political change.

This ki also constitutes the founda-tion of Dahn Yoga exercise and kigong.

Kigong is said to have originated in ancient Korea and China. In ancient Korea, which covered far more land than it does today, this discipline of cul-tivating ki energy took many forms, including the abdominal breathing, meridian stretching, and meditation practiced in our Dahn Yoga classes.

This study of energy cultivation evolved into the larger school of kigong (Qi Gong). Ki, means “life force en-ergy,” and gong, means “to work on.” Kigong was adapted into many schools of energy martial arts and heal-ing traditions, expanding throughout the world and into our modern era. Millions of people worldwide prac-tice this art, particularly in East Asia,

with countless teachers, forms or move-ments, and schools. Despite the great variety in its forms, the essential prin-ciples and practices remain the same re-gardless of the teacher or school.

Unlike the majority of the schools teaching kigong, Dahn Yoga empha-sizes that it is not just for restoring or maintaining physical health. As your body recovers its original and ideal en-ergy circulation, you can feel greater personal empowerment, value and pur-pose. Dahn Yoga instructors hope for all practitioners to have this experience. Not only do we encounter ourselves at a deeper level, we can experience and understand our connection to the very fibers of nature and access the love and sense of gratitude that has always been in our hearts. — Michael Munson

Let’s try it! Fun & simple hand kigongEnjoy the benefits of kigong using just your hands! Here are some easy-to-follow steps inspired by Dahn Yoga founder Ilchi Lee:

➊ Keep your spine straight.

➋ Alternate putting ki (energy) into your hands and taking it out. To put ki in, tense, or flex, your hands. Send energy all the way to your fingertips by extending your fingers as much as you can, until your palms feel like they might burst. Your hands should feel solid.

➌ Flex your dahnjon at the same time to put ki into your hands properly. Remove ki by relaxing your hands without letting them become limp.

➍ Do not let your gaze be vacant, but keep your eyes alive.

➎ Exercise mindfulness. Devote your full attention and effort in every subtle movement. Let no other thought enter your mind; only feel weightlessness and pure joy as you focus completely on the sensation of energy.

➏ When you finish, shake out your hands and release any remaining tension.

➐ Enjoy the benefits: feel energized, develop confidence, and cultivate more genuine self-respect!

Real-life inspiration

Name/age: Anthony Rodriguez, 37Location: West Park, TX (by Houston)passion: Musician, recording engineer

Anthony Dowoonim grew up as a Southern Baptist and values his faith as a born-again Christian. In his spiri-tual quest, he became more active at church and joined Dahn Yoga. Initially guarded about non-Christian tradi-tions, he signed up for a 6-month membership. He truly appreciates the positive effects and atmosphere. “The honest and unconditional love ... has been tremendous,” he said. “I was placed in the middle of many people of different faiths and it has had an amazing effect on me as a person.”

Anthony Dowoonim couldn’t afford to renew his membership when it end-ed, but kept in touch with instructors and members. After making a record-ing for then center manager Ginny Chien, he composed a song which she played in class. The members who heard it were so moved that one of them, upon learning of his finan-cial situation, offered to make a gift of a lifetime membership. “I am blown away,” he says, struck by the open generosity. “This is the kind of love that I have experienced through Dahn Yoga. If Dahn Yoga can have this kind of effect on people, then something that they are doing is right!”

To hear some of his music, please visit www.myspace.com/esoulm.

I first saw Marcus and Katarina Flood, a young married couple from Sweden, nearly three years ago, sitting on the floor of a train-

ing room. We’d just finished YEHA camp. Everyone was up and moving around them, but the two of them sat speechless and still.

“How are you?” I asked. Their reply: “We just realized we have to do this work... forever. What should we do?” They had been discuss-ing their future—con-sidering returning to Sweden, getting a farm, and having a few chil-dren. But the YEHA Camp had introduced a different possibility.

Since then, not only have they both become Dahn Yoga instructors, they held the Grand Opening for the first Body + Brain center in Sweden last November.

I remember this as I walk through snow-filled Stockholm to their new center, Magos Slott, mean-ing “Mago’s Castle” in Swedish. It “ex-presses the vision for [their] center, that it is more than a yoga studio.” I had come to be the trainer for Sweden’s first Shimsung workshop, or Hjärtats Väg, Swedish for “The Heart’s Way”.

The studio is beautiful, a remarkable little piece of heaven in Stockholm. It’s hard to believe that it actually used to be an automobile repair garage.

Katarina Sabumnim, a successful businesswoman, had dreamed of some-thing like this for a long time. But the risk of leaving her lucrative career was daunting, and more so once the op-portunity was in front of her. “Poor Marcus-nim! It wasn’t until my father

Multiplying happy FacesMarcus and Katarina Flood bring Dahn Yoga to Sweden

suddenly called his architect and hand-ed me the phone that I found myself getting on board,” she recalled. “Now I have trained my brain to have tantrums on the side, but not interfere with my vision. That is a very liberating feeling.” Marcus Sabumnim, an artist and engi-neer, became a building contractor and a center manager. “It is hard, but fortu-nately it doesn’t give me much time to doubt my abilities.”

Bringing Shimsung to Sweden was a pivotal experience. “We were able to offer such a precious gift to our mem-bers,” commented Marcus Sabumnim. “A diamond seed has been planted in Sweden.” This is just the beginning. Their vision is to spread the Hongik spirit throughout Scandinavia, starting with three more Shimsungs this year.

Marcus Sabumnim said this experi-ence helped him grasp the meaning of “Shim Ki Hyul Jung” (Where the mind goes, energy follows). “This center was just an idea,” he said, “and now it is very real.” The story of these pioneers asks us this question: What would you cre-ate if you dared to make your dreams really come true? — Genia Sullivan

uniting under One BannerActivating the Earth Citizen Movement

“This is the answer we’ve been look-ing for!” thought Mary Jo Sargent of Arlington, Massachusetts when she read Ilchi

Lee’s book, Earth Citizen: Recovering Our Humanity. “We can work as one species to improve the world for everyone.”

Her whole life, Mary Jo Myungsanim had an intense desire to help the Earth.

Making Big wavesBrain Wave Vibration available in seven languages

Everybody’s catching the wave. From Asia to the Americas, and over

in Europe, all Dahn Yoga practitio-ners are shaking it up to the powerful rhythm inside themselves.

Why? Because it works. As they let go and let their whole

body vibrate, they begin to feel a release of tension and a sensation of something opening up inside their bodies. Their brain clears and suddenly they are in a much better mood.

“It may seem like magical thinking to believe that something so simple could produce such good results. But really, the healing is happening within you. Your brain already instinctively knows what your body needs for health and happiness. The method only helps you

Upon learning about the Earth Citizen Movement, she felt that she had finally found a way to bring everyone together, through self-identity as a citizen of the Earth. As Ilchi Lee writes, “Human be-ings have to acknowledge that their greatest allegiance should belong not to a human-designed government but to the power on which their very existence depends.” Namely, the Earth.

Using her passion and experience as a successful businesswoman, Mary

Jo Myungsanim and other Brain Management Consultants in the Boston region started organizing events to spread the word.

Their first event is an informational fundraising brunch on March 21st at Flora Restaurant in Arlington, which Mary Jo Myungsanim owns with her husband, Bob. Half of the proceeds will go to the Earth Citizen Movement. At the brunch, she plans to talk about the Earth Day Festival scheduled for the 17th of April in Cambridge, MA.

What Mary Jo Myungsanim real-ized is that everyone wants to help the Earth. This movement provides a rea-son and a way for people to unite under a single cause. — Michela Mangiaracina

activate it,” explains the book written by Dahn Yoga founder Ilchi Lee to de-scribe the dynamic method of the same name, Brain Wave Vibration.

Publishers in five countries, includ-ing Taiwan, France, Russia, Japan, and Germany, have purchased the rights to the book, which will soon be available in seven languages.
