Megan Hughes Music Video Analysis – Concept Daft Punk – One More Time https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FGBhQbmPwH8 Target Audience & Needs I think the target audience for this particular song varies very widely with age, gender, race, working class etc. For example, I could see a teenager liking this song due to the funky, upbeat track and the easy animated video content… It’s also one you can dance to and explore with. However, at the same time it can be portrayed as quite a nice song for more elderly people to get them going because it’s still quite subtle but music that is appropriate for them too which they probably listened to in their adolescence stage. I think this song is somewhere in the middle on terms of being cheery and active, e.g. rather than it being played on the outgoing Capital FM or laidback Smooth Radio… It would fall somewhere in-between such as Heart FM which a lot of people don’t mind listening to. Lyrics (Meaning Implied?) Daft Punk’s single, “One More Time,” is that kind of song: a piece of super religion with an invincible beat. The lyrical meaning behind the song is to tell the audience to just keep moving, keep dancing, don’t stop and keep telling yourself to do it one more time which links to an expression they used in the 70’s to keep everyone moving within the time of a depression – it was like a dance marathon. The motto behind the song is to not stop and carry on going no matter what gets in the way.

Target Audience & Needs

I think the target audience for this particular song varies very widely with age, gender, race, working class etc.

Lyrics (Meaning Implied?)

Daft Punk’s single, “One More Time,” is that kind of song: a piece of super religion with an invincible beat.

Tempo The tempo is subtle but upbeat at the same time. The song is quite chilled in one perspective; however it has the power to get you on your feet dancing. Due to it being flexible for a dance anthem the backing track is very up keeping with the happy mood which is set by the bold colours of the visual content.

Genre Disco and French House which is a catch-all term for house music produced by many French artists which was a popular strand of the late 1990s and 2000s when this song was released. Besides this the song also has a partial alien theme with the space shots and blue characters.

Camera Technique The camera shots aren’t very focused due to it being an animated music video, although there are still many examples shown of wide shots, establishing shots, close up shots etc. At the beginning of the music video you see all the astronomy and the shots of space which set the scene and help you initially discover the type of theme – to be specific these shots are wide shots so they can get lots of detail in the frame to support the music with visual content. Also for detail, close up shots are used to see the ins and outs of each object within the frame, besides that they are good for seeing true emotion on characters faces. As well as those shots, I also noticed a two shot of two characters playing guitars back to back, two shots can help to show a connection between characters but I think it is hard to apply that knowledge to an animated video.

Editing Everything on terms of editing got funked up within the music video; the funkiness of his voice fit the funkiness of the music because of the synchronization of the beat and rhythm between his voice and the track. The song was considered an example of French House's frequent use of audio filters, featuring heavily processed and auto-tuned vocals which match up with the genre of the music video content. The cutting between the shots is more like fading in and out as you see two very transparent shots overlapping each other. It’s very slow and relaxing to watch but because the track is so upbeat and sharp and the shot changes are so soft they almost contradict each other. If you were to watch the video with the song on mute, you wouldn’t think it would be that kind of genre music playing when you turned it on.

Use of Digital EffectsOn terms of visual content, not a lot goes on within the ‘Daft Punk – One More Time’ music video, although a large amount of the video revolves around digital effects due to it being animated. The colour scheme is quite faded due to the use of pastel colours, bold colours have been used e.g. blue, red, orange – however, they are not a really high saturation, they’re a little contrasted and dull. All of the characters have the same blue body and each one wears a different styled and coloured outfit. The mash up of colours and themes within the use of digital effects makes the music video very confusing and hard to understand.
