female ape to go up in space, winked at me slyly and pouted her thick,

rubbery lips unmistakably--the first of many such advances during what

would prove to be the longest, and most memorable, space voyage of

my career. (Martha Simpson, 1985)

The X Principle states that something must fall

within certain margins, as opposed to reaching

extremes. It is used, for example, to describe

planets (also called X Planets) that lie in a star’s

Habitable zone (or X Zone). A X economy is a not

too hot or cold economy, sustaining moderate

economic growth and a low inflation.

Identify X, a character from a children’s story.

SONY Group of Companies (Columbia Records) and an American rock group ____________ have published a CD called ________________showing a very

offensive, distorted and insulting depiction of Lord Krishna on its cover.

The CD jacket shows a disfigured alteration of an ancient Hindu painting depicting the God, Lord Krishna, the Hindu God, whom hundreds of millions

worship all over the world, conquering the great serpent Kalinag.

In place of Lord Krishna's face, SONY and Columbia artists have inserted the head of a cat. They have also altered the male chest of Lord Krishna to that

of a female with breasts, wearing a woman's blouse.

Hindus have united all over the world to express their outrage at this affront to their revered image of Lord Krishna. On behalf of the entire Hindu

community we demand that SONY must immediately stop the sale of this CD, and completely change its cover.

An apparently scientific argument is said to be _________ if it is based on assumptions that are known to be incorrect, or on theories that cannot be falsified or used to predict anything. In science and philosophy, the second meaning is known as the principle of falsifiability. It has also come to mean science that is well-meaning and based on current scientific knowledge, but can neither be used for prediction nor falsified. Such conjectures are non-

scientific, even when they are spoken in scientific language. The phrase has been applied to aspects of the super string theory of physics on the grounds

that, although mathematically elegant, it provides (as of now) neither predictions nor tests.

The phrase was coined by the early quantum physicist Wolfgang Pauli, who was known for his colorful objections to incorrect or sloppy thinking. Rudolf

Peierls writes that "a friend showed [Pauli] the paper of a young physicist which he suspected was not of great value but on which he wanted Pauli's

views. Pauli remarked sadly, 'It is ____________.' "

Herostratus (Ἡρόστρατος) set fire to the Temple of

Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World,

on about July 20, 356 BC. He explained that he did so

with a very clear objective in mind. The authorities not

only executed him but also took extreme precautions and

made severe laws, punishable with the penalty of death,

to prevent his purpose from being fulfilled.

What was the purpose, and has it been

fulfilled?

Page 19: DADT XI

To immortalize his name in History

The authorities condemned him to a legacy of obscurity by forbidding mention of his name under the penalty of death. This did not stop ancient historian Theopompus from recording the event and its perpetrator in his history.

And since all of us here seem to give a damn, 2365 years later, it seems it did immortalize his name, whatever it was… and inspire Mark David Chapman as well.

May Irwin (1862–1938) was a Canadian actor, comedienne and singer. Her first starring role on Broadway came in 1895 in a musical comedy created for her by J.J. McNally, called "The

Widow Jones". At the request of the New York World newspaper, Irwin and her co–star, John C. Rice staged a scene from the last act of that comedy for Edison's Vitascope. One

clergy member denounced the film as "a lyric of the stockyards". Critic Herbert Stone complained, " . . . neither participant is

physically attractive and the spectacle of their prolonged pasturing on ________________was hard to beat when only life

size. Magnified to gargantuan proportions and repeated three times over is absolutely disgusting!"
