The Central Agmark Laboratory (CAL) at
Nagpur is the apex and appellatelaboratory of the Dirctorate of Marketingand Inspection (DMI) established in1957 under the Ministry of Rural Areasand Employment,Govt. of India.

The main function of the Laboratory are:-
1. Standardization of quality parameters for new agricultural,horticultural, meat food products.
2. Revising/reviewing the existing quality standards underAgmark.
3. To evolve/standardize methods of analysis/tests underquality assurance system of agricultural and allied products.
4. To develop new methods of analysis or to identify newadulterant in field of agricultural commodities.
5. To undertake collaborative research activities.
6. To advice and comment on all technical matters.
7. Training on analysis of food and agricultural commoditiesand extension work.

It was decided in 1959-60 to set up specialized divisions on commoditybasis to bring in more efficiency and compactness in the working ofCAL. These are
1. Foodgrains Division (Headed by Deputy Director)
This Division deals with research and standardization workrelated to foodgrains and allied products. Also, this deals withformulation / revision of Agmark grade specification ofCommodities.
2. Livestock Products Division (Headed by Dy. Director)
This division is undertaking the work related to the formulation
of grade standards for meat food product and the revision ofexisting standards.

3. Oils and Fats Divisions (Headed by Asst. Director)This div. Deals with technical / scientific matter pertaining to variousoils & fats which includes formulation of specification for newcommodities, revision of existing commodities for detectingadulteration of vegetable oils & fats.
4. Spices and Essentials Oils Divisions (Headed by Asstt. Director)This division deals with formulation / revision of specification of spicesand essential oils and also carries out research work connected withthe quality control of these commodities.
5. General Chemistry Division (Headed by Asstt. Director)This Div. Undertake the work of formulation / revision of specificationof Commodities.

6. Toxicology Division (Headed by Asstt. Director)
Toxicology division deals with study on toxic contaminants such aspesticide reside, aflatoxin etc., in Agricultural and food commodities.attempt was made to study the presence of pesticide residue in milk,eggs, aflatoxin M1 in Khoa in Market sample of Nagpur.
7. Packaging Division (Headed by Asstt. Director)
Packaging division deals with study on packaging material for itssuitability for food contact application, and also with shelf life of
agricultural and allied products in various packaging materials, storagstudy on desiccated coconut was undertaken.

the Division of Planning deals mainly with the following activities:

The allotment of project is done in the beginning ofthe financial year and the project is to be normallycompleted in one year i.e. by end of March.
The project / research work allotted by the Head ofthe division to all Regional Laboratory is based onavailability of staff and the infrastructure at a RAL.
The data analyzed from RAL and field formations isused to formulate a specification and is sent by the
Director to Agricultural Marketing Adviser ( AMA ) forissue of notification in Gazette.

THE FUNCTIONS OF RALs
The Regional Agmark Laboratories form the backboneof the main quality control activities of the DMI. Theyprovide effective checks for the purity and quality ofAgmark products.
To carry out analysis of duplicate and check samples.
To conduct work in the field of formulation ofstandards of new commodities and alsorevision/review of standards (Started from 1992).
To collaborate other activities with regard tostandardization of method, development of method ofanalysis, (started from 1992).To impart training to the Chemists.

SYSTEM PERSPECTIVE:

This section enumerates the requirements, other than thespecific functional requirements for the functioning of proposed
system. It also cater to issue related to security, external interfaces
and backup modes.
External Interface Requirement:
1. User Interface:
The system will have a Graphical User Interface
(GUI) with an online facility. All fields on the screen will have
intuitive labels and list of valid values will be displayed whereverpossible.

The proposed system will involve a number of computers
connected in a Local Area Network (LAN) at each of the locations to
access data from the server. The LANs in individuals Divisions
Laboratories will be connected and the Desktops at Regional Agmark
Laboratories of various state will be connected to CAL through leased
lines (Dialup through telephone).
Computers for desktop as well as a Server(SQL server, LAN Server)
Printers . For printing the various documents & reports
