Robust off-road style and a bold lighting signature

The Sandero Stepway is a clever evolution of Dacia’s Sandero supermini, factoring in all the right elements to transform a modern, attractive hatchback into a prime contender in today’s hot market for compact crossovers.

Taking its cues from the equally rugged and attractively styled Duster, the Sandero Stepway showcases the Dacia family face At the front is the trademark lighting signature that creates contemporary look.

The headlights get a modern design based around a pattern of four stacked rectangles that are surrounded by neatly integrated LED running lights.

The Dacia trademark honeycomb grille design is edged in chrome, which elegantly combines with the black tones of thechiselled bumper design

to bring a dynamic touch to the vehicle’s nose.

The purposeful style continues at the back, where the rear lighting signature is based on four illuminated squares that create a strong 3D effect when on. As at the front, the carefully sculpted bumper design emphasises the car’s tough stance. The Sandero Stepway also benefits from a chromed exhaust tailpipe.

Completing the exterior treatment are the two distinct wheel designs. Essential and Comfort versions get the attractive 'Stepway' structured 16-inch wheels and trims, while the Techroad is enhanced by its standard 'Flex' alloy wheels. There's also a wide array of available paint shades, with a total of eight colours to choose from.

Exterior

Sandero Stepway retains the overall look of the Sandero, but adds extra emphasis in key areas. For a start, it rides higher – an extra 40mm – which means not only added confidence when tackling rougher roads and city kerbs, but also a more commanding outlook.

There’s a beefier side appearance thanks to the black wheelarch extenders, too, and they provide an extra layer of protection against knocks and scrapes. Skidplates front and back add to the purposeful look and the crossover character is reinforced further with the additions of either 16-inch Stepway or Flex wheels, plus contrasting satin chrome bars that run the length of the roof.

The side view shows off the sculpted treatment of the bodywork that strengthens the look of the wheelarches, while the profile sweeps up from the bottom edge of the raked windscreen to create a sleek silhouette, reflecting the car’s aerodynamic properties. Its vital stats are a length of 4,081mm, width of 1,733mm, height of 1,618mm (including roof bars) and a 2,590mm wheelbase.

Adding the finishing touches to the compact crossover are metallic grey, which work together with the the satin grey wheels, front foglight surrounds and skidplates to generate an impressively co-ordinated appearance.

Interior

The Sandero Stepway's interior styling is all about ease of use, comfort and attention to detail. And contrary to what some might expect, given Dacia’s ‘shockingly affordable’ prices, the finish is high with quality materials throughout.

For starters, the overall interior ambience is lifted by the use of elegant and contemporary satin-effect chrome finish for the air vent surrounds, trim strip and centre console fascia. There's also a comfortable four-spoke steering wheel design proudly displays the ‘Stepway’ logo on its chrome surround.

The upper spokes of the wheel also house the handily sited cruise control and speed limiter buttons on Comfort and Techroad versions, which also benefit from a luxurious Soft Feel finish rim.

Additionally, Sandero Stepway boasts interior door releases that arechrome plated and upholstery that features a 3D weave for a greater sensation of depth, which is enhanced by the top-stitching.

For enhanced convenience the front electric window switches are mounted on a panel by the door handles, while height adjustment for the driver’s seat, steering wheel and front seatbelts are standard on all models.

As spacious as a regular five-door family hatchback, the Sandero Stepway can seat five in comfort and provide plenty of load space, too. With the rear seat in place the boot offers 320 litres - one of the highest in the supermini class - and with the rear seat folded that figure soars to 1,200 litres.

‘Big car’ technologies add even more value

Sandero Stepway’s unrivalled value is even more amazing when its ‘big car’ technologies are added into the equation.

To make the distinctive supermini even more enjoyable to own, Dacia has equipped the Sandero Stepway with features that are more common in cars costing considerably more, such as efficiency-enhancing Stop-Start technology.

In addition to a raft of advanced active and passive safety features and the availability of its cutting-edge TCe 90 turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine that combines nippy performance with optimum efficiency, Sandero Stepway notably benefits from the availability of the MediaNav Evolution 7-inch touchscreen multimedia system.

Available on the Comfort version, which boasts such big car technologies as cruise control, speed limiter and a seven-function on-board trip computer, MediaNav includes satellite navigation, Bluetooth connectivity and Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ compatibility as standard, while rear parking sensors provide added peace of mind when parking around town.

To make manoeuvring even simpler there is also Hill Start Assist and the availability of a reversing camera (standard on the Techroad) – once again underlining how Dacia works to equip its vehicles with technology that is more often found in more expensive cars and at no detriment to their outstanding value-for-money.

Highly efficient engines

True to the virtues of its hatchback sister, the Sandero Stepway offers more than just a bargain purchase price – it’s wonderfully economical to run, too. Much of that is thanks to its choice of three highly efficient engines and their proven Renault-Nissan Alliance technology.

The first of two petrol options is the 75 hp three-cylinder SCe 75 engine, which is available in Essential trim only. The engine allows the Sandero Stepway to achieve 43.5-45.6mpg and CO2 emissions of only 124g/km.

The lively 0.9-litre three-cylinder TCe 90 petrol turbo engine, as used in the latest Clio, packs 90 hp. The engine allows the 0-62mph sprint to be completed in 11.1 seconds and a top speed of 104 mph, yet also delivers 42.2-45.6mpg and CO2 of only 127 g/km.

For drivers who prefer diesel, the 95 hp Blue dCi 95 engine returns 58.8-62.7mpg and limits CO2 emissions to just 103g/km. The engine can power the Sandero Stepway from 0-62mph in 12.3 seconds and on to a top speed of 111mph.

The TCe 90 petrol and Blue dCi 95 diesel engines are available in both Essential and Comfort trim levels, and all versions come with a five-speed manual transmission.

Chassis and driving dynamics

Like all its sister Dacia models, Sandero Stepway is built on the company’s BO platform. And when you realise that most Dacia models are also marketed as Renaults in many global markets outside of Europe, you come to realise just how impressive the economies of scale are. It’s another factor in how the brand keeps costs down while still producing competitive vehicles with true worldwide appeal.

While the Sandero is designed and built to cope with roads that are in an even worse state than our own. Sandero Stepway goes even further.

It’s not just about looking the part with its tough styling. Under the skin there’s a beefy suspension system designed to soak up the bumps and knocks on rough roads from Iran to Brazil, plus an extra 40mm ground clearance and skid plates to protect the underside from the worst of Britain’s roads and tracks.

There’s a MacPherson strut-type arrangement at the front, while at the rear, there’s a programmed-deflection flexible beam with coil springs – both systems that are shared with the Sandero hatch. It is a combination which ensures sure-footed and precise handling with bump-absorbing ride comfort.

Power steering is standard on all Sandero Stepway models, which has been tuned to improve control at higher speed, while giving the lightness of touch at low speed that takes the strain out of parking. Combined with the car’s tidy dimensions, it gives a city-friendly turning circle of 10.58 metres.

Think that a car with Sandero Stepway’s price tag is going to be noisy and uncomfortable? Think again. Dacia has taken steps to deliver good NVH (Noise, Vibration and Harshness) performance that includes extensive and effective soundproofing materials being used where it counts, especially around the engine bay and windscreen area.

True to Dacia’s desire to keep things simple, Sandero Stepway has a straightforward UK range that offers three trim variants – Essential, Comfort and Techroad.

Following the simple and straightforward Dacia principles, the purposeful crossover complements the Sandero's already high levels of safety, quality and comfort with extra style and refinement.

Notably, Sandero Stepway has DAB radio and manual air conditioning on all versions as standard. There are also new 16-inch wheels, front foglights

and the Height Adjustment Pack (comprising of height adjustment for the driver’s seat, steering wheel and front seatbelts), while the Comfort version benefits from electric rear windows and a soft feel steering wheel on top of its already generous equipment levels. For the top-of-the-range Techroad the specification swells to include alloy wheels, metallic paint and a reversing camera.

Sandero Stepway models deliver a reassuring tally of active and passive safety features – all as standard. Every model has front and side airbags, ISOFIX child-seat anchors on both outer rear seats, ABS with Electronic

Brake-force Distribution and Emergency Brake Assist, Electronic Stability Control with ASR traction control and daytime running lights. To make life as uncomplicated as possible, all versions come with a heated rear screen, rear wash-wiper, tinted windows and rear door child locks.

The peace-of-mind new vehicle warranty is for three years/60,000 miles, with a two-year paintwork warranty and six years’ anti-corrosion cover. Rather than include a price premium for a longer warranty, Dacia lets

customers choose for themselves if they want longer protection. There are five-year/60,000-mile and seven-year/100,000-mile extended warranty packages.

In the event of a breakdown, owners can call on Dacia Assistance for help. The service operates all day, every day and is provided in partnership with the RAC. The roadside assistance is part of Dacia’s new vehicle package for the first three years/60,000 miles.

The Groupe Renault factory at Tangier, in Morocco, which is home to Sandero and the majority of Sandero Stepway production, builds cars using the Renault Production Way – and just like the 38 other Groupe Renault sites around the world it works to the same high standards and quality benchmarks.

For the Algerian market, the Sandero Stepway has been produced at the�Groupe’s�Oran�plant�in�Algeria�since�June�2016.�The�facility�is�the�Groupe’s most recent facility, opening in 2014.

Standards and processes are just as thorough at the Groupe’s other plants, too, with Renault’s Design-to-Quality methods used to pinpoint any problems.

There was no stinting on quality when it came to developing and producing the Sandero Stepway. It benefits from the great know-how and experience of Groupe Renault, which today ranks as one of the world’s top volume car-makers for reliability.

The development programme included gruelling testing, both in the lab and on the road, where test cars toughed it out across flooded and rugged tracks, clocking up more than 850,000 miles between them. That kind of extreme treatment ensures Sandero Stepway has the build quality to withstand life on some of the world’s roughest roads, let alone the more modest demands of UK highways.

Being part of Groupe Renault also gives Dacia access to modern powertrains and advanced technologies, as can be seen in the modern, efficient engines and transmissions offered in the Sandero Stepway range.

These efforts are paying off when it comes to Dacia’s reputation with owners. The brand took a podium position in an independent pan-European consumer survey in 2012 that quizzed 30,000 customers. And findings from ADAC in Germany, one of Europe’s top motoring organisations, show a high level of Dacia reliability.

1966 Dacia, a state-owned Romanian company based at Pitesti, begins manufacturing the Renault 8 under licence (renamed Dacia 1100) and the Renault 12 in 1969 (renamed Dacia 1300).

2014 ESC and ASR Traction Control are standardised across the range. MediaNav touchscreen infotainment system option launched on UK model, plus cruise control/speed limiter available for Lauréate.

1998 Privatisation of Dacia – Renault takes an initial 51 per cent equity stake in the company. Over the coming years it increases its interest, culminating in a 99.3 per cent share by 2004.

2015 EU6 petrol and diesel engines replace old EU5 units, bringing worthwhile reductions in fuel consumption and lower emissions to reduce running costs.

2012 In preparation for its entry into the UK market, Dacia makes its� public� debut� in� June� at� the�Goodwood Festival of Speed’s Moving Motor Show, while Sandero revealed at the Paris Motor Show.

2016 New Sandero Stepway revealed at the Paris Motor Show with new versions of the Sandero and Logan MCV. New Sandero Stepway offers significant improvements in refinement and comfort.

2018 Dacia celebrates 5 million global sales and 120,000 sales in the UK. The 'shockinly affordable' range of cars now spans five distinct models.

2013 Dacia launches in the UK on 1 January�with�Duster�and�Sandero.�At the same time, ordering opens for the Sandero Stepway. First UK models delivered in May.
